Prematurity is a risk factor of disorders of gut-brain interaction in adults: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) are defined as a variable combination of chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms. Early-life stressors have been implicated as possible contributing factors. AIM: To determine if prematurity and neonatal factors influence the development of DGBI in adults. METHODS: A case-control study was carried out at a tertiary referral center from July 2019 to July 2021. Cases (adults born with extremely premature < 29 weeks of gestation) were recruited from the Health of Adults Born Preterm Investigation cohort. Control subjects were recruite

Modified electroconvulsive therapy for perinatal depression: scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Modified electroconvulsive therapy (mECT), the administration of ECT under general anesthesia with muscular relaxation, is indicated for perinatal depression complicated by high severity, psychosis, catatonia, or resistance to conventional therapeutics; however, knowledge gaps remain regarding its effectiveness and safety in depressed patients and its fetal/neonatal risk profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the literature describing the effectiveness and safety (maternal, fetal, and neonatal) of mECT for perinatal depression. Online databases were searc

The effect of prenatal psychotropic drug exposures on obstetric complications: 19-year population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Although current prescribing guidelines suggest continuation of psychotropic drugs in pregnant women, population-based evidence supporting their safety is limited. AIMS: This study aims to clarify the plausible causal links between maternal psychotropic drug exposures and obstetric complications. METHOD: This cohort study investigated all births by Hong Kong residents ≥18 years of age in public hospitals between 2004 and 2022. Birth episodes were classified according to whether they were unexposed to psychotropic drugs, exposed but discontinued before conception or exposed during

Maternal viral infection during pregnancy affects gene expression of offspring in pons and medulla oblongata after bacterial infection.

Viral and bacterial infections during pregnancy are risk factors for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia in offspring. Polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly I:C) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) are often used as models for viral and bacterial infections, respectively. Maternal immune activation (MIA) using poly I:C or LPS is an animal model for studying ASD and schizophrenia. MIA induces abnormal behaviors in offspring, including anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and reduced social interactions. Neonates are immunologically immature and therefore susceptible to infections. Thus,

Maternal Sleep Disorders and Maternal and Birth Outcomes: A Retrospective US Claims-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are commonly reported during pregnancy and have been associated with adverse maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. However, self-reported sleep disturbances may not be accurately reflected in the prevalence of clinically diagnosed sleep disorders. METHODS: Using Optum's de-identified Clinformatics Data Mart Database, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 93,767 American women who were pregnant with singletons between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2021, to (1) determine the prevalence of clinically diagnosed sleep disorders and breathing abnormalities; (2) e

Low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation offers both immediate and delayed neuroprotection in neonatal hypoxia-ischemia model.

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality, and the current standard of care, therapeutic hypothermia, provides only partial neuroprotection. This study investigates the potential of low-frequency transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF-TMS) as a novel non-pharmacological adjunct therapy by targeting a key pathological mechanism of HIE: a persistent, pathological increase in glutamatergic synaptic transmission, or hypoxic long-term potentiation (hLTP). Using a neonatal mouse model of hypoxia-ischemia, we administered a single session of LF-TMS s

Depression and antidepressant use in pregnancy and adverse maternal and offspring outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Antidepressant use during pregnancy has been increasing in the last few decades. A substantial body of evidence has indicated the increased risks of adverse health outcomes for both pregnant women and their offspring. The association may be biased by uncontrolled confounding of maternity depression or mental health status. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to generate comprehensive estimates of the association between depression, antidepressants, and reproductive outcomes. METHODS: The PubMed and Embase were searched from database inception to Jul 29, 2025, for lon

Tactile stimulation modulates glucocorticoid receptor and activates the BDNF Cascade in the substantia nigra of haloperidol-treated rats: A sequential investigation into nigrostriatal plasticity.

Tactile stimulation (TS) is a sensory intervention successfully applied to premature neonates and extensively studied in various animal models of neuropsychiatric conditions, as well as in other contexts. Haloperidol is a first-generation antipsychotic, and its use leads to serious adverse effects such as the extrapyramidal syndrome, which promotes movement disorders including Parkinsonism, akathisia and tardive dyskinesia. We recently demonstrated that TS can reduce haloperidol-induced movement disorders, promoting changes in the dopaminergic and glutamatergic systems. Furthermore, studies ha

Clomipramine Induced Oxidative Stress and Morphological Alterations in the Prefrontal Cortex and Limbic System of Neonatal Rats.

UNLABELLED: Although clomipramine (CLO) is widely used as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, its subchronic administration during the early stages of brain development leads to depressive-like behaviors in adulthood. High doses of CLO have been linked to mitochondrial impairment and increased reactive oxygen species in cells and adult animals. It is unknown whether subchronic administration of this drug at early ages can induce oxidative stress (OS) in adulthood. The objective of this study was to evaluate OS and cellular damage in the prefrontal cortex and limbic system (hippocampus and amygdala

A Scoping Review of Preventive and Treatment Interventions of Parental Psychological Distress in the NICU in the United States.

Parents of premature infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are at elevated risk of anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma, which may impair bonding and infant development. This scoping review synthesized preventive and treatment interventions designed to reduce parental psychological distress in the United States. Guided by PRISMA-ScR, systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, MEDLINE, and PsycINFO. Eligible studies were those that examined interventions for parents of preterm infants (<37 weeks' gestation) initiated before, during, or within one year after NICU disch

Upregulated HCN currents and reduced intrinsic excitability in prefrontal cortical pyramidal neurons after maternal separation.

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is a core region regulating emotion, is linked to pathological mood disorders, and is a target for antidepressant drugs. Neonatal maternal separation (MS) is an early-life chronic stressor leading to anxiety and depression in adolescence. Previous studies have shown that neonatal MS results in anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in both animals and humans. However, the underlying electrophysiological mechanism remains largely unknown. The present study aims to investigate the MS-induced change in the intrinsic excitability of layer 5 pyramidal neurons (L5 PNs) in

From FGFR2 mutations to precision management: a review of prenatal diagnosis and multidisciplinary interventions in apert syndrome.

Apert syndrome is a severe autosomal dominant disorder caused by recurrent FGFR2 mutations, characterized by the prenatal triad of craniosynostosis, midface hypoplasia, and symmetric syndactyly. This review synthesizes evidence defining core sonographic features: turribrachycephaly secondary to bicoronal suture fusion, facial profile abnormalities including depressed nasal bridge and hypertelorism, and the distinctive "mitten hands/sock feet" syndactyly pattern best visualized via advanced 3D ultrasound in late gestation. Fetal MRI complements ultrasound by identifying associated intracranial

Effects of Digital Mindfulness Training for Couples on Psychological Distress and Infant Neuropsychological Development: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy is associated with unfavorable infant outcomes. Although mindfulness-based interventions can effectively alleviate such distress, barriers often limit access to face-to-face interventions. Psychological distress among partners is also common during pregnancy and affects maternal mental health and the parent-child relationship. However, corresponding research remains scarce. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effectiveness of a digital mindfulness-based intervention for expectant parents (dMBI-EP) in reducing parental psychological distress

Neurological and psychiatric issues in 187 adults with early-treated PKU: The ECOPHEN study.

INTRODUCTION: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the PAH gene leading to phenylalanine hydroxylase deficiency. This results in the accumulation of phenylalanine (Phe) in blood and brain, causing neurological and psychiatric impairments if untreated. Newborn screening (NBS) introduced in the 1960s enables early PKU diagnosis, allowing prompt dietary or sapropterin treatment. The long-term outcomes in adults with early-treated PKU, however, may include subtle neurocognitive deficits alongside somatic neurological and psychiatric complications, which r

Developmental origins of immune function: Maternal prenatal mood is associated with infant immune cell gene expression.

The in-utero environment shapes offspring mental and physical health trajectories over the lifespan, likely through developmental adaptations to fetal biological systems. Offspring immune system development is a putative pathway through which the prenatal environment influences offspring health. The current study tested associations of maternal prenatal depressive and anxiety symptoms with infant pro-inflammatory and antiviral gene expression in a sample of 118 mother-infant pairs enrolled in a longitudinal study. Mothers reported on depressive and anxiety symptoms during interviews in early,
