Ablation of the choroid plexus attenuates hydrocephalus-induced parenchymal edema with moderate reduction of postnatal hippocampal neurogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus (ChP) produces cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and regulates brain development and adult subventricular zone (SVZ) neurogenesis, but its role in postnatal hippocampal subgranular zone (SGZ) neurogenesis is not well understood. Infantile hydrocephalus is sometimes treated with lateral ventricle ChP cauterization, which often improves clinical symptoms without substantially reducing ventricular volumes. To understand the roles of the ChP/CSF system in normal conditions and the impact of ChP ablation or cauterization in hydrocephalus, novel tools for the manipulation of ChP-m

A stereotactic injection method to establish a clinically relevant germinal matrix hemorrhage murine model.

BACKGROUND: A germinal matrix hemorrhage (GMH) model that recapitulates both GMH-like tissue injury and intraventricular hemorrhage via injection of clostridial collagenase into the ganglionic eminence (GE; germinal matrix) has been well established in rats. NEW METHOD: A dose-response injection study was performed using weight-based collagenase doses extrapolated from established rat models. Reproducible targeting of the right GE in neonatal mice was achieved by the following stereotactic injection protocol: needle entry 1.1 mm lateral and 1.5 mm anterior to lambda, insertion to a depth of 1

Intraoperative effects of ETV and CPC on intraventricular pressure and pulsation amplitude: A preliminary investigation of the hydrodynamic model of infant hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: The hydrodynamic model of hydrocephalus proposes that ventriculomegaly is driven by exaggerated intraventricular pulsations rather than impaired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation alone. Under this model, endoscopic third ventriculostomy with choroid plexus cauterization (ETV/CPC) treats hydrocephalus by creating a pulsation absorber and by reducing a primary source of intraventricular pulsation. However, direct intraoperative human evidence supporting this two-step mechanism is lacking. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that ETV followed by CPC would produce measurable, s

Bedside external ventricular drainage in the NICU: procedural efficiency and infection trends in a 15-year single-center cohort.

PURPOSE: To compare the procedural efficiency of bedside versus operating-room external ventricular drainage (EVD) insertion in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to describe culture-positive EVD-associated infections. METHODS: We performed a retrospective single-center cohort study of NICU infants who underwent EVD insertion between 2011 and 2025. Operative time and insertion characteristics were analyzed at the insertion level. Culture-positive EVD-associated infections acquired at the study hospital were described, and annual infection incidence was explored in relation to unit meth

Longitudinal Assessment of Abnormal Cortical Folding in Fetuses and Neonates With Isolated Non-Severe Ventriculomegaly.

PURPOSE: The impact of ventriculomegaly (VM) on cortical development and brain functionality has been extensively explored in existing literature. VM has been associated with higher risks of attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorders, as well as cognitive, language, and behavior deficits. Some studies have also shown a relationship between VM and cortical overgrowth, along with reduced cortical folding, both in fetuses and neonates. However, there is a lack of longitudinal studies that study this relationship from fetuses to neonates. METHOD: We used a longitudinal dataset of 30 subjects (

Ventricular Subgaleal Shunt in Children Under Three Months of Age, from Diagnosis to Outcome: A Review After 11 Years of Experience in a French University Hospital.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neurosurgical intervention on the newborn's developing brain is a risk factor for neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). These patients necessarily require regular, coordinated follow-up. The ventricular subgaleal shunt (VSGS) technique has been used since 2013 at Rouen University Hospital. Like any change in practice, this technique must be evaluated. In this paper, we describe the population of patients with hydrocephalus treated by VSGS, the complications associated with the procedure, and the outcome of these patients at two and six years old. METHODS: This study

Overview of pediatric hydrocephalus in Nigeria: A systematic review.

Hydrocephalus, a prevalent pediatric neurological condition, results from abnormal cerebrospinal fluid accumulation within the brain's ventricular system. Its causes are broadly classified as congenital or acquired. Early surgical intervention is pivotal for achieving favorable neurological outcomes. This systematic review synthesized data on hydrocephalus in Nigeria from 1962 to 2023, analyzing 87 studies involving 3,380 patients. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, drawing from seven databases, including PubMed, Emba

Factors affecting length of stay according to bronchopulmonary dysplasia severity: a nationwide cohort study in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Longer hospitalizations for preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) delay developmental outcomes, increase the risk for hospital-acquired complications, and exert a substantial socioeconomic burden. This study aimed to identify factors associated with an extended length of stay (LOS) at different levels of severity of BPD. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted using the Korean Neonatal Network registry of very low birth weight infants with BPD between 2013 and 2017 through retrospective analysis. RESULTS: A total of 4263 infants were diagnosed with BPD. For mild BPD

Paediatric hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus is classically considered as a failure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) homeostasis that results in the active expansion of the cerebral ventricles. Infants with hydrocephalus can present with progressive increases in head circumference whereas older children often present with signs and symptoms of elevated intracranial pressure. Congenital hydrocephalus is present at or near birth and some cases have been linked to gene mutations that disrupt brain morphogenesis and alter the biomechanics of the CSF-brain interface. Acquired hydrocephalus can develop at any time after birth, is oft

Infant Hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus is a neurosurgical condition that is highly prevalent in pediatric medicine. In the infant population, there is a distinct set of features that all primary pediatricians would benefit from understanding. Infant hydrocephalus can present prenatally on imaging and postnatally with symptomatic enlargement of the head and associated skull features and raised intracranial pressures. The 2 major pathophysiology models of infant hydrocephalus are the bulk flow and the intracranial pulsatility models. The most common acquired forms of hydrocephalus include posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus,

Acquired hydrocephalus following hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy without intraventricular hemorrhage: A case report.

The most common cause of acquired hydrocephalus in infants is hemorrhage, most often as a consequence of prematurity. Other important causes include neoplasm and infection, usually bacterial meningitis. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) in term infants usually results in secondary microcephaly. We report an infant with severe HIE at birth treated by therapeutic hypothermia who developed progressive acquired hydrocephalus over 2 months, although no cause of the hydrocephalus was identified. Although hydrocephalus, even intraventricular hemorrhage, is uncommon in term infants with HIE, caref

Successful Eradication of a Highly Resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis Species in a Premature Neonate With Bacteremia and Meningitis.

Elizabethkingia anophelis is a Gram-negative bacillus that can exhibit highly resistant phenotypes against most antibiotics with evidence of efficacy and safety in the neonatal population. Given the limited antimicrobial options, clinicians may be forced into challenging treatment scenarios when faced with central nervous system infections in premature neonates caused by E. anophelis . We report a case of successful treatment of hospital-acquired meningitis and bacteremia caused by E. anophelis at 11 days of life in a male infant born at 29 weeks, 1 day gestation and birth weight of 1.41 kg.
