Bridging the gap between human behaviour and animal welfare: A study on human behaviour change and body condition scoring of suckler cows.

There are several examples of best animal husbandry practices that are not adopted, leading to animal welfare compromises. Bridging this gap between advice and human behaviour is crucial in helping drive improvements in animal welfare. Inappropriate feeding of pregnant cows is common and associated with compromised health and welfare. Obesity and leanness can cause calving difficulty and reduce the vigour of newborn calves. One way to offset the problems associated with body condition extremes is to adopt body condition scoring (BCS) by hand. Knowing each animal's condition helps the farmer id

Knowledge of Exclusive Breastfeeding and Associated Factors Among Fathers of Infants Under 1 year in Northeast Ethiopia.

Exclusive breastfeeding is defined as a condition in which the child takes only breast milk and no additional food, water, or other liquids for the first 6 months of its life. Even though many contributing factors are present for this problem, fathers' knowledge about breastfeeding is a vital and neglected part. A baby has a higher chance of being breastfed if the father has more knowledge regarding exclusive breastfeeding. This study aims to assess knowledge of exclusive breastfeeding and associated factors among fathers of infants aged under 1 year in Northeast Ethiopia, 2023. A community-ba

Prevalence of underlying organic causes in infants presenting with excessive crying: a 2-year follow-up study.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study is to assess the proportion of infants referred for excessive crying (EC) who were diagnosed with an underlying condition likely related to EC within 2 years of follow-up. A retrospective study reviewing the records of infants younger than 5 months with EC as the primary reason for referral. Infants with fever at presentation, acute illness, gestational age < 32 weeks, birth weight < 1500 g, perinatal asphyxia, or previously diagnosed congenital disorders were excluded. Of 1123 screened infants, 530 presenting with EC were included (53% male; mean age, 2

Feeding the hospitalized large-for-gestational-age infant: Clinical dilemmas and the need for growth standards.

Infants born large-for-gestational-age (LGA) are increasingly common because of the rising rates of maternal obesity and diabetes. Some infants born LGA require hospitalization and nutrition support, yet no specific growth standards exist to guide nutrition management. Feeding practices based on weight-based guidelines for infants born at appropriate weight for gestational age may unintentionally promote overfeeding and increase long-term obesity risk. This Clinical Dilemma explores the challenges of feeding hospitalized infants born LGA and highlights the urgent need for research to develop e

Early-life stages impact later feeding behavior and physiology in light-born piglets.

Low birth weight (LBW) piglets and those exposed to negative experiences early in life are at higher risk of poor development. This study aimed to investigate the potential imprinting effects of early growth rates on metabolism and feeding behavior in LBW piglets. A total of 128 piglets ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Pietrain) were selected at weaning 23.1 ± 0.37 d old (5.2 ± 0.94 kg body weight [BW]), including 69 castrated males and 59 females. At 51 d of age, 46 LBW piglets (0.98 ± 0.139 kg) were classified using a 2 × 2 factorial design based on growth rate during the suckling and nursery perio

Neonatal Overnutrition Induces Long-Lasting Hypothalamic POMC Silencing and Shapes Distinct Obesity Phenotypes According to Adult Dietary Environments.

Our study aimed to analyze the individual effects of early-life overnutrition (focusing on its long-lasting impact) and adult cafeteria diet (CAF) exposure, as well as their combined effect, on hypothalamic food-intake regulation. Neonatal overfeeding was induced by a small litter model (SL, 4 pups/dam), and the control group was raised in normal litters (NL, 10 pups/dam). Male rats received control diet (CON) until postnatal day (PND) 90 and then CON or CAF for 11 weeks. Body weight, naso-anal length and food intake were recorded weekly. At PND167, rats were euthanized to obtain brain, blood

Lingual frenotomy for breastfeeding difficulties: indications, surgical techniques and multidisciplinary care in infants and young children.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, the diagnosis of infant ankyloglossia and the number of lingual frenotomy procedures have increased markedly, particularly in the context of breastfeeding difficulties. Frenotomy is often perceived as a relatively simple solution to poor latch, nipple pain or suboptimal milk transfer, yet expert statements highlight substantial gaps in the evidence base, heterogeneous diagnostic criteria and concerns about overdiagnosis and unnecessary surgery in breastfeeding dyads. This creates important challenges for clinicians and lactation consultants who must distinguis

Isolation and assessment of characterization of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus GD1 strain from China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) is an important pathogen in swine, causing severe economic losses to the global swine industry. As a coronavirus, PEDV is prone to mutations and recombination. Therefore, characterizing circulating strains is essential for disease control. In this study, a PEDV strain (GD1) was isolated from diarrheic piglets in Guangdong Province, China, and identified by RT-PCR and immunofluorescence. Pathogenicity was evaluated in piglet challenge experiment. The results showed that GD1 strain could be stably passaged in Vero cells, forming syncytia. Phylogenetic analy

Short-term Treatment with Metformin During Puberty Mitigates Metabolic Dysfunctions Programmed by Neonatal Overfeeding in Male Rats.

OBJECTIVE: To address the major public health problems of increased body weight and obesity, causing conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Early obesity in childhood and adolescence has more severe long-term health consequences. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept examines how early overfeeding and other factors affect health throughout life. This study hypothesized that a short-term metformin treatment during puberty could reduce metabolic dysfunction caused by neonatal overfeeding. We investigated whether the same intervention would have a similar effect o

Alveolar Capillary Dysplasia With Misaligned Pulmonary Veins (ACDMPV): Description of Two Cases and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misaligned pulmonary veins (ACDMPV) is one of the major causes of neonatal interstitial lung disease, causing persistent pulmonary hypertension (PH) of the newborn, although symptoms can present later in infancy. Two patients were recently diagnosed with ACD at our Institution and prompted us to perform a structured review of the condition. METHODS: We considered published articles from 2018 to 2025. The final population analyzed was composed of 165 patients, including our cases. From each publication, we extrapolated: clinical presentation, rad

Beyond the binary description of sinus tracts in periprosthetic joint infection.

Claw lesions in dairy cattle pose a significant risk to dairy farmers worldwide in terms of animal welfare concerns and economic profitability. However, the use of different data sources, classification systems, and definitions of reference groups limits the comparison across herds and decreases the usability of the recordings for phenotypic and genetic analyses. In South Africa, information on claw lesions is not routinely collected by dairy farmers and data are limited to hoof trimmers recording lesions during preventative trimming or as needed by producers. Records of the most common claw l

Pitstop approach: diabetologist referral and quality of care in patients with type 2 diabetes - a Swiss longitudinal study.

STUDY AIMS: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are typically managed in primary care settings, but management has become more complex in recent years due to modern therapeutic options. There is a paucity of data on the role of a one-off referral to an outpatient diabetes centre (a "pitstop" approach) in improving the quality of diabetes care. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were referred to an outpatient diabetes centre at a regional hospital in Switzerland between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020. The primary outcome was the change
