Congenital Imprinting Diseases: Aetiology, Pre- and Perinatal Manifestations, Diagnosis and Care of Affected Families and Pregnancies.

Congenital Imprinting Disorders (ImpDis) are caused by abnormal expression of parentally imprinted genes. They are characterized by disturbances of imprinting marks which are a specific type of epigenetic signatures and occur either sporadic or familial. So far, twelve ImpDis have been identified, eight of them manifest prenatally or in the neonate period. With exception of abdominal wall defects, ImpDis are rarely associated with major malformations, but predominant early manifestations are disturbed pre- and/or postnatal growth, muscular hypotonia, neonatal feeding difficulties and metabolic

Caregivers' experiences of feeding children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review of qualitative evidence.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to investigate the feeding experiences of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy, in any setting, by identifying, critically appraising, and synthesizing the relevant literature. INTRODUCTION: Feeding difficulties in children with cerebral palsy are common and affect both children and caregivers. Difficulties include dysphagia and risk of aspiration, which can result in poor growth and development. Caregivers find feeding challenging and stressful due to the time involved, fear of aspiration, and the pressure of meeting other family demands. Fin

Predicting children's emotional and behavioral difficulties at age five using pregnancy and newborn risk factors: Evidence from the UK Household Longitudinal Study.

Childhood emotional and behavioral difficulties have a profound impact on later life outcomes, making it crucial to identify early-life risk factors that predict emotional and behavioral difficulties. However, much of the existing research has concentrated on diagnosing, rather than predicting, emotional and behavioral difficulties, and has often focused on adolescents rather than younger children. This study employs machine learning (ML) techniques to construct an interpretable predictive model using data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, aiming to identify key risk factors that influ

Prevalence of non-communicable diseases and duration of breastfeeding in children under 14 years of age: a nationwide community-based cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: It's a well-established fact that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) originating in childhood contribute significantly to long-term morbidity. While breastfeeding is a known protective factor for various health outcomes, limited national-level data exist linking breastfeeding duration to chronic pediatric conditions. The study aims to assess the prevalence of key pediatric NCDs and examine the association between breastfeeding duration and the risk of heart disease, diabetes mellitus (DM), musculoskeletal disorders, cancer, and mental health problems in a weighted sample of children

Neurodevelopment of Children Whose Mothers Were Randomized to Low-Dose Aspirin During Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Because low-dose aspirin is now commonly prescribed in pregnancy, we sought to assess the association between early antenatal exposure and child neurodevelopment. METHODS: We performed a noninferiority, masked, neurodevelopmental follow-up study of children between age 33 and 39 months whose mothers had been randomized to daily low-dose aspirin (81 mg) or placebo between 6 0/7 and 13 6/7 weeks of gestation through 37 weeks. Neurodevelopment was assessed with the Bayley-III (Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, 3rd Edition) and the ASQ-3 (Ages and Stages Questionnaire, 3

Updates on the management of inflammatory bowel disease from periconception to pregnancy and lactation.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects reproductive planning due to psychological effects and mechanical problems related to surgery. Children of people with IBD have an increased risk of about 10% if one parent has IBD and up to 33% if both parents have IBD. The fertility of people with IBD is similar to the general population, but fertility might be reduced in individuals with active IBD, ileal pouch-anal anastomosis, or perianal Crohn's disease. Flaring disease during pregnancy increases complications, such as preterm birth. Thus, disease management with appropriate medications can optimi

Consensus reporting guidelines to address gaps in descriptions of ultra-rare genetic conditions.

Genome-wide sequencing and genetic matchmaker services are propelling a new era of genotype-driven ascertainment of novel genetic conditions. The degree to which reported phenotype data in discovery-focused studies address informational priorities for clinicians and families is unclear. We identified reports published from 2017 to 2021 in 10 genetics journals of novel Mendelian disorders. We adjudicated the quality and detail of the phenotype data via 46 questions pertaining to six priority domains: (I) Development, cognition, and mental health; (II) Feeding and growth; (III) Medication use an

YouTube Video Clips on Breastfeeding Education and Promotion for Arabic-Speaking Populations: A Social Media Content Analysis.

Background/Objective: Although the benefits of breastfeeding are well-documented and widely recognized, reports indicate that optimal breastfeeding rates are low in Arabic-speaking countries. This is a significant concern given the health benefits associated with breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. Previous research has shown that education interventions can increase breastfeeding knowledge, attitudes, and practices in Arabic-speaking populations. The social media platform YouTube holds significant potential for distributing customized health education for diverse audiences; specifical

Maternal Overweight and Obesity and Their Effect on the Growth of the Newborn During the First Six Months of Life.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal overweight and obesity during pregnancy have been shown to have multiple negative effects on the mother's health, which can even affect the infant's growth by increasing weight gain and altering various indicators, such as weight for age, length for age and weight for length. While breast milk on the other hand reduces these risks, and it's the best and most complete food for the newborn. It's a dynamic fluid capable of being modified to meet the needs of each stage of the newborn, but despite this capacity and the fact that maternal body mass index can have an impact on

Postoperative Tongue Exercises for Ankyloglossia Following Lingual Frenectomy: A Case Report.

Ankyloglossia, also named tongue-tie, is an innate developmental anomaly where the lingual frenum appears anchored to the sublingual space. Even though it is not considered a major congenital condition, it can create a variety of problems, such as difficulty in feeding newborns, difficulty in mastication, speech problems, poor oral hygiene, malocclusion, and hindrance in social interaction because of restricted tongue movements. Lingual frenectomy is the treatment of choice. Postoperative tongue exercises should be considered a valuable addition after lingual frenectomy, providing the patient

Perinatal factors associated with sensory processing difficulties in infancy: Findings from the Etude Longitudinale Francaise depuis l'Enfance (ELFE) French national birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sensory processing involves the nervous system receiving, modulating, and responding to sensory stimuli. Clinical samples have elevated rates of sensory processing difficulties, less is known about sensory processing at population-level. We aimed to investigate patterns of sensory processing in infancy and their association with perinatal factors. METHODS: Data from a French prospective birth cohort of 9861 babies were used to identify latent sensory classes of 1-year-olds. Multinomial logistic regression examined whether sex, cumulative sociodemographic risk or perinatal factors,

Congenital Nasal Bones Agenesis: Report of a Rare Malformation.

Congenital arhinia and hyporhinia are rare facial anomalies whose knowledge usually comes from case reports. The severity of each case described in literature is variable; it also depends on associated malformations too. Since the newborns are obligate nasal breathers, babies with arhinia or hyporhinia usually have respiratory distress and need airway stabilization. In addition, most of these children present difficulties in feeding and this impairment must be managed early. We describe an unusual case of partial congenital arhinia, the baby did not have other anomalies or any specific complic
