Community perceptions and experiences on caring for the premature babies in Arba Minch health and demographic surveillance site, southern Ethiopia: Interpretive Husserlian phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: Premature birth is the leading cause of under-5 child mortality, accounting for 18%. More attention is needed for premature babies. Myths, misconceptions, and negative attitudes stigmatize premature births and slow prevention and care efforts. In Ethiopia, studies have been conducted on premature birth and its risk factors. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the perceived causes of premature birth, caring aspects, and community challenges. This qualitative study aims to address these research gaps. METHODS: This interpretive Husserlian phenomenological study was cond

Associations between Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Insulin-like Growth Factor I and Nutrition.

Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) has been suggested as an important factor in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). In turn, nutrition has been associated with IGF-I levels and could be of importance in the pathogenesis of BPD. This study aimed to explore the association between nutrition, the IGF-I axis and the occurrence of BPD. Eighty-six preterm infants (44 male, mean gestational age: 29.0 weeks (standard deviation: 1.7 weeks)) were enrolled in an observational study. Serum IGF-I (µg/L) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3; mg/L) were measured at bi

Postnatal Growth at 64 Weeks Postmenstrual Age in Preterm Infants Delivered at ≤ 34 Weeks' Gestation: A Single Center Study.

OBJECTIVE: To study the postnatal growth at 64 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) in preterm neonates born at ≤ 34 weeks gestational age. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between August, 2019 and November, 2021, wherein, we took anthropometric measurements of neonates (delivered at ≤ 34 weeks' gestation) at 64 (± 2) weeks PMA. The rapidity of postnatal growth was categorized according to change in the z-score of anthropometric measures, viz, weight-for-age, length-for-age and head circumference-for-age, between birth and 64 weeks PMA. For each of the growth parameters, growth rate wa

Nutritional Strategies for Preterm Neonates and Preterm Neonates Undergoing Surgery: New Insights for Practice and Wrong Beliefs to Uproot.

The nutrition of preterm infants remains contaminated by wrong beliefs that reflect inexactitudes and perpetuate old practices. In this narrative review, we report current evidence in preterm neonates and in preterm neonates undergoing surgery. Convictions that necrotizing enterocolitis is reduced by the delay in introducing enteral feeding, a slow advancement in enteral feeds, and the systematic control of residual gastric volumes, should be abandoned. On the contrary, these practices prolong the time to reach full enteral feeding. The length of parenteral nutrition should be as short as poss

Effectiveness of a Novel Feeding Algorithm for Oral Feeding Transition of Infants Born Prematurely.

BACKGROUND: Feeding skill acquisition is commonly a limiting factor determining when an infant born prematurely can be discharged. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine if the addition of a novel feeding progression algorithm (combination of objective data from a suck measurement device and slow flow/low variability nipples) to current neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) standards could decrease feeding-related length of stay (primary outcome). We hypothesized that by timing the initiation of oral feedings to coincide with adequate sensory-motor skill development, feeding-related length of s

Role of RIPK3 in lipid metabolism and postnatal overfeeding-induced metabolic disorders in mice.

Postnatal overfeeding can increase the long-term risk of metabolic disorders, such as obesity, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and treatment approaches are limited. Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) is associated with several metabolic diseases. We investigated the effects of RIPK3 on neonatal overfeeding-related metabolic disorders. On postnatal day 3, litter sizes were adjusted to 9-10 (normal litters, NL) or 2-3 (small litters, SL) mice per dam to mimic postnatal overfeeding. After weaning, NL and SL mouse were fed normal diet. We generated an adeno-associated virus

Providing very low-birth-weight infants with fast enteral feeding reduced how long they needed a central venous catheter.

AIM: To determine the impact of the protocol change from slow to fast enteral feeding progression on duration of central venous catheter placement, and the rates of late-onset sepsis and necrotising enterocolitis. METHODS: We compared the evolution of all very low-birth-weight infants admitted on their first postnatal day in neonatal intensive care unit during a 12-month period, before (2021 Cohort) and after (2022 Cohort) implementation of a new feeding protocol. Linear regression model was used to adjust for confounding factors. RESULTS: A total of 343 VLBW infants were included (median ge

Neonatal overfeeding promotes anxiety, impairs episodic-like memory, and disrupts transcriptional regulation of hippocampal steroidogenic enzymes.

The objective of our study was to investigate the impact of neonatal overfeeding on cognitive functions and neurosteroidogenesis in male rats. Offspring were assigned to either small litters (SL; 4 pups/mother), resulting in increased milk intake and body weight gain, or normal litters (NL; 10 pups/mother). On postnatal day (PND) 21, half of the male rats were euthanized, while the remaining were kept under standard conditions (4 rats/cage) until PND70. At this stage, subjects underwent assessments for locomotor activity, anxiety levels via the elevated plus maze, and episodic-like memory (ELM

Overfeeding in the early postnatal period aggravates inflammation and hepatic insulin sensitivity in the 5α-dihydrotestosterone-induced animal model of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age and is closely associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. To clarify the contribution of prepubertal weight gain to the development of insulin resistance in PCOS, we investigated the effects of early postnatal overfeeding on inflammatory and energy-sensing pathways as well as on markers of insulin signaling in the liver of the PCOS rat model. METHODS: Obesity induced by overfeeding was achieved by reducing litter size, while the PCOS-like condition was de

Differential gene expression in neonatal calf muscle tissues from Hanwoo cows overfed during mid to late pregnancy period.

Maternal nutrition significantly influences fetal development and postnatal outcomes. This study investigates the impact of maternal overfeeding during mid to late pregnancy on gene expression in the round and sirloin muscles of Hanwoo neonatal calves. Eight cows were assigned to either a control group receiving standard nutrition (100%) or a treated group receiving overnutrition (150%). After birth, tissue samples from the round and sirloin muscles of neonatal calves were collected and subjected to RNA sequencing to assess differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RNA sequencing identified 43 DE

Early Life Energy Balance: The Development of Infant Energy Expenditure and Intake in the Context of Obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to provide a summary of the current knowledge on measurement tools and most recent evidence for prenatal and postnatal modulators of energy balance in young infants. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevention of pediatric obesity depends upon curating the perfect imbalance of energy intake to energy expenditure, taking into consideration the energy needs for healthy growth. We summarize the recent evidence for the programming of fetal and infant metabolism influenced by maternal preconception health, prenatal metabolic milieu, and physical activity behaviors. In the e

Maternal Early Overfeeding Negatively Impacts Cardiac Progenitor Cell Differentiation and Cardiomyocyte Maturation in the Neonatal Offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal obesity has been positively correlated with an increased cardiometabolic risk in the offspring throughout life, implying intergenerational transmission. However, little is known about the early-life cardiac cell modifications that imply the onset of heart diseases later in life. This study analyzed cardiac progenitor cells and cardiomyocyte differentiation on day of birth in the offspring born to obese dams. METHODS: The litter size reduction model was used to induce obesity in female Swiss mice. Both maternal groups, the Small Litter Dams (SLD-F1), which were overfed d

Screening for functional gastrointestinal disorders in preterm infants up to 12 months of corrected age: a prospective cohort study.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are characterized by a variety of symptoms that are frequently age-dependent, chronic, or recurrent and are not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities. There are studies in the literature reporting different results regarding the relationship between prematurity and FGIDs. The main objective of this study was to compare the frequency of FGIDs between preterm and term infants. The secondary objective was to evaluate whether there was any association between neonatal characteristics and development of FGIDs. A multicenter prospective co

CRISPR/Cas13a-based rapid detection method for porcine deltacoronavirus.

BACKGROUND: Porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) is a newly discovered porcine intestinal pathogenic coronavirus with a single-stranded positive-sense RNA genome and an envelope. PDCoV infects pigs of different ages and causes acute diarrhea and vomiting in newborn piglets. In severe cases, infection leads to dehydration, exhaustion, and death in sick piglets, entailing great economic losses on pig farms. The clinical symptoms of PDCoV infection are very similar to those of other porcine enteroviruses. Although it is difficult to distinguish these viral infections without testing, monitoring PDCoV

Infancy predictors of functional somatic symptoms in pre- and late adolescence: a longitudinal cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Physiological regulatory problems in infancy (i.e., problems with sleeping, feeding, and tactile reactivity) have been associated with impairing functional somatic symptoms (FSS) at ages 5-7. We aimed to extend this finding by examining not only the association of physiological regulatory problems but also other infancy factors (i.e., emotion dysregulation and contact problems) with FSS in pre- and late adolescence. Standardized behavioral assessments and self-report questionnaire data from assessment waves at 0-1, 11-12, and 16-17 years of the population-based Copenhagen Child Coh
