BACKGROUND: Drug discovery is a complex, multidisciplinary process that requires pharmacy graduates to be effective analytical, teamwork-oriented, and problem-solving individuals. Traditional teaching approaches have shortcomings in enabling students to learn such skills, particularly in resource-limited or disrupted educational settings.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to measure the effect of a peer-assisted learning (PAL) intervention on Sudanese pharmacy students' knowledge, confidence, and perceptions towards the drug discovery process during a period of conflict-related disruption.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), is a common liver disorder, predicted to increase globally. Currently, non-invasive methods are proposed for the assessment of (MASLD). This study aimed to investigate the use of serum Liver Type Fatty Acid Binding Protein (L-FABP) concentration as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in pediatric MASLD patients and to evaluate its relationship with steatosis and fibrosis.
METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study on paediatric MASLD patients. Serum levels of L-FABP and hepatic biochemical markers were measu

The traditional approach of operating isolated medical and health professional schools has created a disconnect between the rapidly evolving challenges in healthcare and the static nature of educational systems. This disconnect has hindered the ability of educational institutions to adapt effectively to the changing health needs of populations. Interprofessional education (IPE), which fosters collaboration and interaction among various health professions, provides a promising framework for addressing these issues by promoting teamwork, shared understanding, and integrated practice. However, im

The fenarimol analogue EPL-BS1246 was previously discovered to be potent against Madurella mycetomatis, the causative agent of the neglected tropical disease mycetoma. Further evaluation of a small set of fenarimol analogues in vivo revealed a correlation between efficacy and the lipophilicity (log D) of the analogues. To explore both this correlation and the series structure-activity relationship (SAR), we have evaluated a total of 185 fenarimol analogues derived from five different daughter chemotypes. Potent (MIC50 < 9 μM) in vitro activity was found for 22 analogues, five of which gave pro

Scedosporium apiospermum is an opportunistic fungal pathogen that causes various infections in immunocompromised patients. Voriconazole is the first-line treatment; however, its clinical use is often challenging due to complex pharmacokinetics and significant interpatient variability, primarily driven by polymorphisms in the CYP450 (CYP2C19) enzymes. These genetic variations affect drug metabolism, resulting in suboptimal drug levels or increased toxicity. We present a case of atraumatic localized Scedosporium apiospermum mycetoma on the back of a patient with a renal transplant. The patient u

Climate change is reshaping the epidemiology of dermatologic diseases in the Global South through rising temperatures, UV radiation, extreme weather events, and shifting ecosystems. These environmental stressors exacerbate thermal injuries, infectious and inflammatory dermatoses, and neglected tropical diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, mycetoma, and scabies. Vulnerable populations-including displaced communities, persons with albinism, and outdoor workers-face disproportionate risk. This article highlights the dermatologic impacts of climate change, emphasizing the need for integrated

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSIs) pose a major challenge to healthcare systems worldwide, with a disproportionately higher impact in low- and middle-income countries. Medical clinical students are actively involved in patient care and thus play a vital role in implementing infection prevention protocols. However, deficiencies in their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding infection control may undermine patient safety and surgical outcomes. This study aimed to assess the KAP of clinical medical students in Sudan concerning infection control measures in surgical settings

Armed conflicts severely impact healthcare systems leading to medication shortages and restricted access to essential services. The ongoing war in Sudan has disrupted healthcare infrastructure affecting patients particularly those with chronic diseases. This study examines the accessibility of medications and the consequences of limited healthcare access during the conflict. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among individuals affected by the Sudan war. Data were collected through an online questionnaire assessing medication accessibility, healthcare service availability, and so

The extent of lung damage post-tuberculosis (TB) infection varies greatly, resulting in impairment of pulmonary structure and/or function. We present a case of TB misdiagnosis and mismanagement in a 53-year-old black African male living with HIV on anti-retroviral therapy (ART) with post-TB unilateral left lung damage. He presented with a one-month history of intermittent symptoms of fever, night sweats, right-sided chest pain, exertion intolerance, and hemoptysis, and was commenced on anti-TB treatment (ATT) at a local clinic despite the two negative TB infection laboratory results. BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a common and costly complication that occurs in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The prevalence of neuropathy is estimated to be around 8% in newly diagnosed patients and exceeds 50% in those with long-standing disease. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of DPN among individuals with Type 2 diabetes mellitus in Sudan and to identify the factors associated with DPN. METHODOLOGY: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the outpatient setting of an endocrinology clinic at a tertiary care centre (Diabetes Specializ

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade angioproliferative tumor primarily associated with HIV but also seen in immunocompetent individuals. Its presentation can mimic infectious diseases such as Madura foot (mycetoma), a chronic granulomatous infection endemic to tropical regions. Accurate diagnosis is critical as management differs significantly between the two. We present a rare case of Kaposi sarcoma in a 40-year-old HIV-negative female initially misdiagnosed as Madura foot. The patient underwent two wide local excisions without improvement. Symptoms persisted until the diagnosis of KS was conf

Eosinophilia, defined as an elevated eosinophil count either in blood or tissue, has diverse implications for diagnosing and managing various diseases. Elevated eosinophil levels are often associated with conditions such as allergic reactions, autoimmune disorders, and specific infections. In the realm of head and neck pathology, eosinophilia can offer valuable insights into underlying infectious processes, which are often challenging to diagnose due to their overlap with other inflammatory and allergic conditions. This review describes the roles of blood and tissue eosinophilia in several inf

Clinicians should consider eumycetoma, actinomycotic mycetoma, and skin cancers in patients from tropical or subtropical regions who present with painless swelling and discharging sinuses. The early histopathology, microbiological studies in conjunction with imaging, are of critical importance in narrowing the differential and starting appropriate treatment to prevent complications and deformities.

BACKGROUND: Mycetoma is a deep fungal infection caused by several microorganisms, with Madurella mycetomatis being the most common causative agent. Another related species, Madurella fahalii, is also known to cause eumycetoma. However, unlike M. mycetomatis, M. fahalii exhibits resistance to itraconazole, the standard treatment for eumycetoma, and the underlying cause of this resistance remains unknown. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of this resistance is critical for developing more effective therapies.
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using the high-quality draft genome sequence of Madurella fah

Background/Objectives: New drugs are urgently needed for the treatment of neglected tropical diseases including leishmaniasis and eumycetoma, as well as globally occurring parasitic diseases such as toxoplasmosis. Fragrances, both natural and synthetic, were shown to be a rich source for the development of new anti-infectives and warrant deeper investigations. Exemplarily, we synthetically optimized the fragrance 4-(4,8-dimethyl-3,7-nonadienyl)-pyridine, a.k.a. Maritima, a pyridine derivative with marine odor. Methods: A new cationic N-cetyl-modified derivative of Maritima (dubbed Cetyl-Mariti

Mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous infection predominantly affecting young individuals, characterized by painless swelling and often misdiagnosed due to its resemblance to other conditions. This case report presents the first documented instance of eumycetoma located in the buttock of a 44-year-old male patient from Somalia, a region with limited literature on this disease. The patient exhibited a 10-year history of indurated swelling, which progressed to the discharge of dark granules, leading to the diagnosis of black grain eumycetoma. Comprehensive diagnostic methods, including imaging and

INTRODUCTION: Mycetoma is a chronic disabling inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of granulomatous masses in subcutaneous tissue extending to the skin, deep tissues, and bones.
FINDINGS: An exhaustive and detailed exploration of medical literature unveiled only 11 published articles addressing mycetoma in Somalia since 1927. Among these, six were case reports involving 12 patients, and three were case series encompassing 163 patients, resulting in a total of 175 reported cases. Notably, two articles in French lacking abstracts were excluded from the review. Considering Somalia

Mycetoma is a chronic suppurative granulomatous infection of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and is caused by filamentous aerobic bacteria (actinomycetoma) or true fungi (eumycetoma), representing 60% and 40% of cases worldwide, respectively. The causative organism enters into the subcutaneous tissue, usually of the foot, from contaminated soil or vegetative material through inoculation from a thorn prick, or repeated trauma. It commonly affects men, farmers and field workers. Differentiating eumycetoma from actinomycetoma can be challengin
