Early-life stages impact later feeding behavior and physiology in light-born piglets.

Low birth weight (LBW) piglets and those exposed to negative experiences early in life are at higher risk of poor development. This study aimed to investigate the potential imprinting effects of early growth rates on metabolism and feeding behavior in LBW piglets. A total of 128 piglets ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Pietrain) were selected at weaning 23.1 ± 0.37 d old (5.2 ± 0.94 kg body weight [BW]), including 69 castrated males and 59 females. At 51 d of age, 46 LBW piglets (0.98 ± 0.139 kg) were classified using a 2 × 2 factorial design based on growth rate during the suckling and nursery perio

High preoperative CONUT score is associated with treatment failure and mortality after surgery for acute periprosthetic joint infection: a single-centre retrospective cohort study.

Claw lesions in dairy cattle pose a significant risk to dairy farmers worldwide in terms of animal welfare concerns and economic profitability. However, the use of different data sources, classification systems, and definitions of reference groups limits the comparison across herds and decreases the usability of the recordings for phenotypic and genetic analyses. In South Africa, information on claw lesions is not routinely collected by dairy farmers and data are limited to hoof trimmers recording lesions during preventative trimming or as needed by producers. Records of the most common claw l

An Atypical Case of Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia.

Fetal and neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FNAIT) results from maternal antibodies targeting fetal platelets during pregnancy, often causing hemorrhagic manifestations detectable antenatally or shortly after birth. We report an atypical form of FNAIT with delayed onset in a healthy, breastfed male infant who developed diffuse petechiae 2 weeks after birth due to severe thrombocytopenia. The mother was shown to be negative for the human platelet antigen-1a (HPA-1a) allele but had anti-HPA-1a IgG antibodies, while the father and newborn were HPA-1a positive, confirming the diagnosis. Despit

Effect of Feeding Human Milk on Development of the Infant Immune System and Allergic Outcomes-An Area of Research Challenge and Need.

Surprisingly little is known about the effect of breastfeeding on the infant's immune system development. Systematic reviews have suggested the role of breastfeeding in the prevention against asthma, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, and childhood leukemia. However, studies on atopic disease suffer from reverse causation, small size, and those assessing food allergy (FA) have often relied on parent-reported outcomes. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are not possible for ethical reasons. In addition, epidemiological studies have not considered that there is a large interindivi

Breastfeeding Shapes the Gut Microbiota and Its Structure Is Associated with Weight Gain Trajectories in Mexican Infants.

Background: Rapid weight gain in early infancy increases the risk of childhood obesity, while exclusive breastfeeding can protect against it, depending on breastmilk composition, maternal diet, and infant gut microbiota. Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the association between maternal diet, breastmilk components, infant gut microbiota, and weight gain in the first year of life of Mexican breastfed infants. Methods: This longitudinal study included 27 mothers with exclusively breastfed infants (≥5 months of age). We evaluated maternal diet and breastmilk composition at 5 m

Rules of Thumb for Estimating Drug Levels in Breast Milk: How Well Do They Work?

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life due to extensive benefits for the maternal-infant dyad. While over 90% of mothers initiate breastfeeding, continuation drops to 35% by 6 months, often due to concerns about medication safety. Clinicians often face decisions about medication use during lactation in the absence of robust data. Factors such as molecular weight (MW), lipid solubility, protein binding and a drug's acid-base status are routinely stated as the determinants of drug passage into milk and

Evaluation of organ and skeletal physiological characteristics for improved classification of growth-restricted newborn piglets.

The identification of potentially slow-growing pigs at birth, using both external and internal traits, would enable the early implementation of targeted management and feeding strategies to optimize herd management and improve production efficiency. Twenty-four piglets from six hyperprolific sows were classified into four categories based on birth body weight (BW), body mass index (BMI), and crow-to-rump length (CRL): severe intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR), low birth weight (LBW), moderate birth weight (MBW), and high birth weight (HBW). Organ weights, computed tomography (CT) measurem

Defining Low Milk Supply: A Data-Driven Diagnostic Framework and Risk Factor Analysis for Breastfeeding Women.

Background: Current low milk supply (LMS) definitions use subjective maternal perceptions or arbitrary thresholds for 24 h milk production (MP), potentially misclassifying cases. This study aimed to re-evaluate the definition of LMS using data-driven approaches and investigate associated maternal risk factors. Methods: Lactating mothers 4-26 weeks postpartum (n = 460) provided demographic, obstetric, and infant data and measured 24 h MP and infant milk intake using the test-weighing method. Infant growth was calculated as their weight-for-age z-score. Latent profile analysis, receiver operatin

The Impact of Donating Human Milk on the Health of the Donor and Their Infant: Evidence from Two Systematic Reviews.

Using human milk has been associated with decreased morbidity and mortality in preterm/low birth weight infants. Donor human milk is recommended when maternal milk is unavailable. The benefits of donor human milk for the recipient are well documented, but the impact of donation on donors and their infants is not clear. We aimed to evaluate the effects of donation human milk on donors and their infants. Literature searches were conducted (April 2024) to identify studies (observational, quasi-experimental, and randomized control trials) assessing the impact of human milk donation on donor health

Community perceptions and experiences on caring for the premature babies in Arba Minch health and demographic surveillance site, southern Ethiopia: Interpretive Husserlian phenomenological study.

INTRODUCTION: Premature birth is the leading cause of under-5 child mortality, accounting for 18%. More attention is needed for premature babies. Myths, misconceptions, and negative attitudes stigmatize premature births and slow prevention and care efforts. In Ethiopia, studies have been conducted on premature birth and its risk factors. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the perceived causes of premature birth, caring aspects, and community challenges. This qualitative study aims to address these research gaps. METHODS: This interpretive Husserlian phenomenological study was cond

Associations between Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, Insulin-like Growth Factor I and Nutrition.

Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) has been suggested as an important factor in the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). In turn, nutrition has been associated with IGF-I levels and could be of importance in the pathogenesis of BPD. This study aimed to explore the association between nutrition, the IGF-I axis and the occurrence of BPD. Eighty-six preterm infants (44 male, mean gestational age: 29.0 weeks (standard deviation: 1.7 weeks)) were enrolled in an observational study. Serum IGF-I (µg/L) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3 (IGFBP-3; mg/L) were measured at bi
