The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) can be transmitted vertically through the placenta in utero, during labour and delivery and through breast milk. In Nigeria, about 5.8% of women attending antenatal clinics were HIV infected as of December 2002. It was projected that by the end of the year 2002, there were about 849,000 orphans resulting from AIDS and about 755,000 established paediatric AIDS in this country. Interventions to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV include voluntary counselling and testing (VCT), administration of antiretroviral drugs (ARV), modification of obstetric

Poor physical abilities of broilers may prevent them from performing behaviours for which they are motivated. The aim of this study was to measure the influence of physical ability and motivation on the performance of broilers in short physical tasks. We tested birds from a fast- and a slow-growing broiler strain in a runway to 12 weeks of age. To manipulate motivation, half of the birds of each strain was feed deprived for 3h and the other half for 24h before testing. Each bird was tested in a control and a slalom runway test once a week. With a similar motivation, slow growers had a shorter

The 6th nationwide anthropological survey (NAS) of children and adolescents was carried out in the Czech Republic in 2001 to continue the series of surveys repeated at 10-year intervals since 1951 (with the participation of the Slovak Republic up to 1991). The major objective was to find out the following body measurements of children and adolescents: body height and weight, and head, arm, waist and hip circumferences. Questionnaires were used to find out the body measurements of parents (body height and weight) and some socio-economic characteristics of the child's family (number of siblings,

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether infants who are fed initially and advanced at 30 mL/kg per day (intervention) take fewer days to get to full feedings than those who are fed initially and advanced at 20 mL/kg per day (control), without increasing their incidence of feeding complications and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). We also examined whether these infants regain birth weight earlier, have fewer days of intravenous fluids, and a have shorter hospital stay.
METHODS: A randomized, controlled, single-center trial was conducted in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of a community-based county ho

BACKGROUND: Neonatal infections are a major cause of death worldwide. Simple procedures for identifying infants with infection that need referral for treatment are therefore of major public health importance.
METHODS: We investigated 3303 infants <2 months of age presenting with illness to health facilities in Ethiopia, The Gambia, Papua New Guinea and The Philippines, using a standardized approach. Historical factors and clinical signs predicting sepsis, meningitis, hypoxemia, deaths and an ordinal scale indicating severe disease were investigated by logistic regression, and the performance

Two experiments were conducted with fast- (Ross x 3F8) and slow- (Ross x 308) feathering broiler males from 0 to 3 wk of age to determine Met and Cys requirements. A corn-soybean meal basal diet was formulated to be deficient in Met and Cys but was adequate in all other nutrients (22.0% CP; 3,050 kcal ME/kg). In experiment 1, diets contained 0.50% dietary Cys with 0.35, 0.40, 0.45, and 0.50% total Met. Feed conversion (FC) of slow- and fast-feathering males improved in a similar manner to 0.50% Met (linear, P < 0.05). Nitrogen retention measured from 20 to 21 d of age optimized at 0.46% Met (q

The World Health Organization considers maternal breast feeding to be the ideal manner to feed a newborn child, as well as being a unique biological and emotional base, and recommends breast feeding to be the exclusive feeding method until the age of six months. After a period of massive abandonment caused by multiple socio-cultural causes beginning about a half century ago, breast feeding is now starting to make a slow recuperation. In Spain, there is an initial predisposition to breast feed of about 80%. However, in spite of the initiatives carried out by organizations and professional group

The Child Growth Foundation has published the first weight reference charts specifically designed for the breast-fed infant. Based on a sample of 120 long-term British breast-fed babies, the charts demonstrate the particular growth pattern of breast-fed babies. This differs from formula-fed infants in that breast-fed babies initially gain weight more rapidly, but from two to three months of age their weight gain decreases and they begin to move downwards across centiles. At present breast-fed babies are measured against the standard British 1990 weight reference chart rather than one that refl

The mdx mouse serves as animal model for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Energy status in muscles of mdx mice is impaired and we have demonstrated recently that the energy precursor creatine exerts beneficial effects on mdx skeletal muscle cells in culture. Here we show that feeding a creatine-enriched diet to new-born mdx mice strongly reduced the first wave of muscle necrosis four weeks after birth. Necrosis of the fast-twitch muscle extensor digitorum longus was inhibited by 63+/-14% (P<0.0001) while necrosis of the slow-twitch soleus muscle was not significantly decreased. In addition, using

Slow anastomotic function is a common problem in the management of congenital duodenal obstruction. We describe a simple technique of excision duodenoplasty (ED) that results in a fixed open anastomosis, which facilitates early commencement of feeds and discharge from hospital. A retrospective case-note review (1981-2000) was undertaken to compare the results of ED with side-to-side duodenoplasty (SSD) and diamond-shaped anastomosis (DD). The outcome measures were days to commencement of feeds, duration of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and length of hospital stay. In ED a 1.0 to 1.5-cm ell

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether the mean gastric residual volume (GRV) and green gastric residuals (GR) themselves are significant predictors of feeding intolerance in the early enteral feeding advancement in extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) infants.
DESIGN: Ninety-nine ELBW infants were fed following a standardized protocol (day 3--14). At 48 hours of age, milk feeding was started (12 mL/kg/d increments, 12 meals per day). GR were checked before each feeding, and a GRV up to 2 mL/3 mL in infants less-than-or-equal750 g/>750 g was tolerated. In cases of increased GRV, feedings were r

The nutritional support of gastrointestinal growth and function is an important consideration in the clinical care of neonatal infants. In most health infants, the provision of either breast milk or formula seems to support normal intestinal mucosal growth, but the most significant advantages of breast milk may be for host defense or gut barrier-related functions that are involved in reducing infection. The specific effects of various milk-borne growth factors on key mucosal immune and barrier functions are likely to provide valuable new clues to the advantages of human milk. A substantial num

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and cow milk allergy (CMA) occur frequently in infants younger than 1 year. In recent years, the relation between these 2 entities has been investigated and some important conclusions have been reached: in up to half of the cases of GER in infants younger than 1 year, there may be an association with CMA. In a high proportion of cases, GER is not only CMA associated but also CMA induced. The frequency of this association should induce pediatricians to screen for possible concomitant CMA in all infants who have GER and are younger than 1 year. With the exception of

OBJECTIVE: Arterial aneurysms are life-threatening but usually asymptomatic before requiring hospitalization. Oculomics of retinal vascular features (RVFs) extracted from retinal fundus images can reflect systemic vascular properties and therefore were hypothesized to provide valuable information on detecting the risk of aneurysms. By integrating oculomics with genomics, this study aimed to (i) identify predictive RVFs as imaging biomarkers for aneurysms and (ii) evaluate the value of these RVFs in supporting early detection of aneurysms in the context of predictive, preventive and personalize

Cisplatin‑induced acute kidney injury (CI‑AKI) is one of the most common comorbidities in patients undergoing chemotherapy, notably limiting the clinical use of cisplatin. However, the pathogenesis of CI‑AKI remains to be fully elucidated. Sulforaphane (SFN), a NRF2 agonist, exhibits anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and anti‑apoptotic effects, thus SFN exerts protective effects in kidney injury diseases. However, the possible role and underlying mechanisms of SFN in CI‑AKI remain ambiguous. An in vivo model of CI‑AKI was constructed using C57BL/6 mice that were administered a single intraperiton

Vitamin K-dependent factors are lower in neonates than in adults, and these anomalies are more prevalent in preterm neonates and in breast-fed infants. Vitamin K deficiency can account for vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) which occurs in 3 forms--early, classic and late. Vitamin K should be administered to all neonates at birth or immediately afterwards. However, the protocols for administration (route of administration, dosage, number of doses) remain a subject of discussion. Oral administration of a single dose of vitamin K protects against classical and early VKDB, but is less effective

We tested the hypothesis that rat soleus muscle fiber growth and changes in myosin phenotype during the postnatal, preweaning period would be largely independent of weight bearing. The hindlimbs of one group of pups were unloaded intermittently from postnatal day 4 to day 21: the pups were isolated from the dam for 5 h during unloading and returned for nursing for 1 h. Control pups were either maintained with the dam as normal or put on an alternating feeding schedule as described above. The enlargement of mass (approximately 3 times), increase in myonuclear number (approximately 1.6 times) an

We recently demonstrated in neonatal pigs that, with amino acids and glucose maintained at fasting levels, the stimulation of protein synthesis in longissimus dorsi muscle with feeding can be reproduced by a physiological rise in insulin alone. In the current report, we determine whether the response of protein synthesis to insulin in the neonatal pig is 1) present in muscles of different fiber types, 2) proportional in myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins, 3) associated with increased translational efficiency and ribosome number, and 4) present in other peripheral tissues and in viscera. The impact of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa on future mortality rates of infants, children, and mothers, life expectancy, and economic growth is profound. Vertical transmission of HIV, transmission from mother to child, is a major factor in the increasing rates of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa. Vertical transmission of HIV occurs in utero, intrapartum during labor and delivery, and postpartum during breast-feeding. Because of the large numbers of HIV-infected mothers in developing countries, the majority trials regarding prevention of vertical tran

Pediatricians must monitor early breastfeeding to detect and manage breastfeeding difficulties that lead to slow weight gain and subsequent low milk production. Infant growth during the first 3 months of life provides a clear indication of breastfeeding progress. Healthy, breastfed infants lose less than 10% of birth weight and return to birth weight by age 2 weeks. They then gain weight steadily, at a minimum of 20 g per day, from age 2 weeks to 3 months. Any deviation from this pattern is cause for concern and for a thorough evaluation of the breastfeeding process. Evaluation includes histor
