Nursing and midwifery management of hypoglycaemia in healthy term neonates.

UNLABELLED: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review was to determine the best available evidence for maintenance of euglycaemia* in healthy term neonates, and the management of asymptomatic hypoglycaemia in otherwise healthy term neonates. INCLUSION CRITERIA: TYPES OF STUDIES: The review included any relevant published or unpublished studies undertaken between 1995 and 2004. Studies that focus on the diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care devices for blood glucose screening and/or monitoring in the neonate were initially included as a subgroup of this review. Howeve

A paradigm of undernourishing and neonatal rehabilitation in the newborn rat.

Perinatal undernutrition as a deficiency of nutrient availability, affects body and brain developmental processes and promotes recurrent health problems. Thus, altered mother-litter bonds and deficient environmental interactions may interfere with the brain pluripotential capabilities of the newborn. To gather information concerning the mechanisms underlying perinatal undernutrition we designed a paradigm of undernutrition and neonatal rehabilitation in the rat. An underfed group came from pregnant Wistar rats fed with 50% of the diet from G6 to G12 and with 60% from G13 until G21. After birth

Small intestine growth and morphometry in piglets weaned at 7 days of age. effects of level of energy intake.

Two trials involving a total of 56 pigs were conducted to examine the effects of weaning at 7 d of age (trial 1) and of energy intake level and length of post-weaning underfeeding period (trial 2) on small intestinal (SI) development and morphometry. At 3 d after weaning, weight of the SI and mucosa (g/kg body weight) and villous height along SI were reduced by 20, 36 and 41%, respectively, compared to the day of weaning. Intestinal morphometrical changes are dependent on SI site and days post-weaning. Villous atrophy on d 3 and recovery on d 14 post-weaning were greater and occurred earlier i

Perinatal feedings adversely affect lipogenic activities but not glucose handling in adult rats.

The long-term effects of early under- and overfeeding on glucose metabolism and fat cell lipogenesis were studied. Newborn rats were reared in litter sizes of four, 10, and 16 pups. The amount of milk intake per pup varied inversely with litter sizes. A subgroup of pups from each group was studied at age 20 d, whereas another subgroup was weaned to an ad libitum feeding of standard rat chow and studied at 12 wk of age. There were no differences among groups in food intake on the basis of per gram body weight. Overfeeding during suckling resulted in fatter rats at weaning and in the adults. The

Assessment of nutritional status in clinical practice.

As most diseases can have nutritional consequences, the assessment of nutritional status may help to detect an underlying disease, to identify nutritional disorders related to a given disease, and to quantify the impact of nutritional therapy. The aims and methods used for nutritional assessment depend on the circumstances in which nutritional assessment is performed. Whatever the context or aim, nutritional status is assessed through a simple, mainly clinical approach, based on the past history, dietary intake, auxological analysis, anthropometric measurements, body compartment and biological

Healthy eating in infancy.

Dietary prescriptions meant to reduce the risk of adult diseases could retard growth and development in infants and young children. Parents who pay attention to their infant's hunger or satiety signals will avoid under-feeding or over-feeding their infant. A useful guiding principle is that, as long as overall growth compares favourably with the standards for age, it is likely that all is well. Nutrition priorities during infancy should reflect the promotion of growth and development rather than the prevention of diseases later in life. For this reason, fat restriction is not appropriate under

Analysis of walking locomotion in adult female rats undernourished as sucklings.

Suckling rats were undernourished from birth by underfeeding their mothers. They were refed from 3 weeks of age. Detailed analyses were made of the walking locomotion of previously undernourished and well-fed control female rats at 10 weeks, using electronic, computer, and TV techniques. Previously undernourished rats were found to deploy shorter stride times resulting in greater forward velocities. The shorter stride times were attained by reductions in stance time, while swing time was unaffected. No changes in stride length or width were observed, and the relationships between stride time a

Derivation of gnotobiotic ferrets: perinatal diet and hand-rearing requirements.

A procedure is described which has resulted in successful gnotobiotic derivation of the domestic ferret. The most critical element of this hand-rearing procedure was found to be diet, with ferret milk being required for at least the first 7 days. Puppy milk replacer was phased in during the next 10 days, and enriched cow's milk sufficed thereafter. Around-the-clock sip-feeding with fire-polished Pasteur pipettes was necessary at intervals gradually increasing from 1 to 1.5 hours at birth to 3 hours by day 21. Temperature regulation was accomplished with an electric heating pad placed eccentric

Effects of maternal hypocaloric diet feeding on neonatal rat brown adipose tissue.

Hypocaloric diet (control diet diluted 1:1 with cellulose) feeding during pregnancy caused a reduction in the body weight of rat pups at birth whereas the main parameters of brown adipose tissue composition and thermogenic activity were unaffected. When prenatally underfed rat pups were nursed by untreated dams eating control diet during lactation, early (day 4 of life) and late (day 13 of life) neonatal body weight was rehabilitated and brown adipose tissue remained essentially unchanged. When prenatally underfed rat pups were nursed by dams that were fed with the hypocaloric diet during lact

Effects of early undernutrition and handling on the adrenocortical activity of neonatal rats.

Early neonatal experiences such as handling or undernutrition may alter developmental patterns associated with brain maturation and neuroendocrine regulation. Therefore, we tested neonatal ACTH and corticosterone responses to ether stress in pups submitted to chronic underfeeding which involves daily handling (U), daily handling only (H), or no handling (I). Pituitary ACTH content and brain myelin basic protein (MBP) content were measured in all rat groups. We found that the order of magnitude in stress-induced ACTH secretion was: I greater than H greater than U on day 14 and 18 of age while o

Effects of early life undernutrition in artificially-reared rats. 2. Subsequent behaviour.

Four groups of rat pups were reared: mother-reared control (well-fed) and undernourished (MRC, MRU) and artificially-reared control and undernourished (ARC, ARU). AR rats were fed expressed rats' milk (days 5-7), mixtures of rats' milk and milk substitute (days 8-16), and milk substitute only (days 17-20) by intermittent infusion via a gastric cannula. Undernutrition, imposed from 5-25 days, was effected initially by underfeeding the mother (MRU) or by infusing restricted quantities of milk (ARU). Weaning was at 21 days and undernutrition from 21-25 days was by restricting the supply of solid

Growth and cellular composition in rats with intrauterine growth retardation: effects of postnatal nutrition.

We evaluated the catch-up growth of rats with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) raised in normal litters (8-10 pups) or in large litters (14-16 pups) during the first 2 wk of life. We also studied the influence of nutrition on cellular composition at birth and at 2 wk. Fifty-four pups (27 IUGR and 27 controls) were enrolled into normal or undernutrition groups. Postnatal undernutrition resulted in significantly lower growth in both control and IUGR rat pups than in normally fed pups. In the control group, postnatal undernutrition resulted in a lower liver weight but not a lower brain weig

Growth and fatty acid metabolism in experimental intrauterine growth retardation: effect of postnatal nutrition in rat.

Rats, 3 1/2 to 4 d of age, were used to study weight gain and fatty acid (FA) metabolism as a function of degree of intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) and of postnatal nutrition. The IUGR, quantified postnatally as mild and severe, was produced by uterine artery ligation on d 17 of gestation, and controls were shamoperated. Food intake was manipulated by varying the litter size; i.e., pup number per dam was 4 or 5 for overfeeding, 8-10 for normal feeding and 13-15 for underfeeding. Fatty acid synthesis rate (FASR) (determined by tritiated water incorporation in FA) and contents were determ

Perinatal anatomic development of alveolar type II cells in rats.

We studied the perinatal development of rat alveolar type II cells. The volume density (Vv) of lamellar bodies increased twofold from gestational day 21.5 to postnatal day 1 and 1.6-fold between age 1 and 60 days. The Vv of glycogen areas fell sharply between late gestation and postnatal day 1; this decrease was greater in pups delivered from dexamethasone- compared with diluent-treated dams. In utero administration of glucagon to fetuses on gestational day 21.5 caused a decline in the Vv of glycogen areas within 4 h. Pups from dams underfed in late gestation had a higher Vv of glycogen areas

Preweaning food intake influences the adiposity of young adult baboons.

The hypothesis that preweaning nutrition influences adult fat cell number and adiposity was tested in baboons. Newborn baboons were fed Similac formulas with caloric densities of 40.5 kcal (underfed), 67.5 kcal (fed normally), and 94.5 kcal (overfed) per 100 g formula. From weaning (16 wk) until necropsy at 5 yr of age all baboons were fed the same diet. At necropsy, fat cell number and fat cell size in 10 fat depots were measured. Female baboons overfed as infants had markedly greater fat depot mass, primarily because of fat cell hypertrophy, than normally fed or underfed females. Overfed mal

Feeding in infancy, adipose tissue cellularity and obesity.

Female Sprague-Dawley rats were raised in litters of four (L4), nine (L9) and 24 (L24). The well nourished L4 rats grew insignificantly larger, heavier and fatter than the L9 controls; the underfed L24 rats remained small and stunted, and had absolutely and relatively less adipose tissue than the L4 and L9 rats. Approximately half of the rats of these three groups were fed a high-fat diet from age 18 to 43 weeks. Almost all of the rats in the fat-fed groups became obese. The amount of adipose tissue expressed as percent body weight was essentially the same in all three fat-fed groups, with the
