Feeding the hospitalized large-for-gestational-age infant: Clinical dilemmas and the need for growth standards.

Infants born large-for-gestational-age (LGA) are increasingly common because of the rising rates of maternal obesity and diabetes. Some infants born LGA require hospitalization and nutrition support, yet no specific growth standards exist to guide nutrition management. Feeding practices based on weight-based guidelines for infants born at appropriate weight for gestational age may unintentionally promote overfeeding and increase long-term obesity risk. This Clinical Dilemma explores the challenges of feeding hospitalized infants born LGA and highlights the urgent need for research to develop e

Neonatal Overnutrition Induces Long-Lasting Hypothalamic POMC Silencing and Shapes Distinct Obesity Phenotypes According to Adult Dietary Environments.

Our study aimed to analyze the individual effects of early-life overnutrition (focusing on its long-lasting impact) and adult cafeteria diet (CAF) exposure, as well as their combined effect, on hypothalamic food-intake regulation. Neonatal overfeeding was induced by a small litter model (SL, 4 pups/dam), and the control group was raised in normal litters (NL, 10 pups/dam). Male rats received control diet (CON) until postnatal day (PND) 90 and then CON or CAF for 11 weeks. Body weight, naso-anal length and food intake were recorded weekly. At PND167, rats were euthanized to obtain brain, blood

Short-term Treatment with Metformin During Puberty Mitigates Metabolic Dysfunctions Programmed by Neonatal Overfeeding in Male Rats.

OBJECTIVE: To address the major public health problems of increased body weight and obesity, causing conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Early obesity in childhood and adolescence has more severe long-term health consequences. The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept examines how early overfeeding and other factors affect health throughout life. This study hypothesized that a short-term metformin treatment during puberty could reduce metabolic dysfunction caused by neonatal overfeeding. We investigated whether the same intervention would have a similar effect o

Late gestation maternal overnutrition alters gene expression and histomorphology in neonatal foal testes.

Reproductive health of male offspring following perturbations in maternal nutrition is not well-described in the horse; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of maternal overnutrition on neonatal foal testicular development. Sixteen Quarter Horse mares were used in a completely randomized design and stratified by expected foaling date, body weight, and body condition score into 1 of 2 dietary treatments beginning on gestational day 235: control (CON; n = 8) fed to meet nutrient requirements and overfed (HIGH; n = 8) fed 40% above CON. At 5 h postpartum, foals were

Early overfeeding and adult anhedonia: Impact of neonatal nutrition on hedonic food regulation in male rats.

The aim of our study was to analyze the impact of early-life overnutrition and the exposure in adulthood to a cafeteria diet (CAF) on eating behavior and on the expression of key genes involved in the regulation of food intake. Male Wistar rats were raised in small (SL, 4 pups/dam) or normal litters (NL, 10 pups/dam), fed a control diet (CON) until postnatal day (PND) 90. Then, they received CON or CAF for 11 weeks (NL-CON, NL-CAF, SL-CON, SL-CAF; 12±2 rats/group). Body weight, food intake and behavioral tests (Elevated Plus Maze: EPM, Sensory-specific satiety: SSS) were assessed. At PND167, t

Maternal postpartum depression and responsive feeding in the first 2 years: A review.

Maternal postpartum depression can influence caregiving behaviors, including the ability to practice responsive feeding. Responsive feeding promotes children's autonomy over their hunger and satiety and can lead to proper growth and development, whereas non-responsive feeding practices such as pressuring or controlling feeding tend to override children's cues, instilling unfavourable behaviors and increasing the risk of overfeeding and altered growth. Responsive feeding may be especially important during the first two years, a crucial period of learning, growth, and development. This review su

Maternal exercise and neonatal overfeeding induces sex-specific peripheral and brain alterations in the offspring.

Childhood obesity is rapidly increasing, resulting in long-term negative health consequences. The impact of early-life factors on adulthood health is described through the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease (DOHaD) concept, which links the metabolic effects of prenatal interventions to an increased risk of chronic non-communicable diseases later in life. Our study aimed to evaluate the influence of prenatal exercise and neonatal overfeeding on pup development, and peripheral metabolic parameters, as well as mitochondrial function and oxidative stress in the hypothalamus and hippocampus

Metabolic Perturbations and Ectopic Fat Deposition in Men With Low Birth Weight: Effects of a 4-Week Carbohydrate Overfeeding Challenge.

UNLABELLED: Low birth weight (LBW) is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes (T2D). We hypothesized that 4 weeks of carbohydrate overfeeding (COF) with +25% energy would unmask key T2D perturbations among 22 nonobese LBW men, including five with screen-detected metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), compared with 21 healthy control participants with normal birth weight (NBW). Body weight, lean and fat mass, and hepatic fat content increased to the same extent in both groups during COF, whereas fasting glucose and insulin resistance increased significantly more in LBW comp

Antenatal colostrum expression: are we interfering with nature?

BACKGROUND: Antenatal colostrum expression refers to the practice of hand-expressing and storing breast milk during the final weeks of pregnancy, usually beginning around 36 weeks of gestation. Initially introduced to provide an immediate supply of colostrum for newborns at risk of hypoglycemia, particularly those born to mothers with diabetes, it was also intended to reduce reliance on commercial milk formula. Over time, the practice has gained significant international visibility through clinical recommendations, maternal testimonials, and social media promotion. As a result, antenatal colos

Role of RIPK3 in lipid metabolism and postnatal overfeeding-induced metabolic disorders in mice.

Postnatal overfeeding can increase the long-term risk of metabolic disorders, such as obesity, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and treatment approaches are limited. Receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIPK3) is associated with several metabolic diseases. We investigated the effects of RIPK3 on neonatal overfeeding-related metabolic disorders. On postnatal day 3, litter sizes were adjusted to 9-10 (normal litters, NL) or 2-3 (small litters, SL) mice per dam to mimic postnatal overfeeding. After weaning, NL and SL mouse were fed normal diet. We generated an adeno-associated virus

Neonatal overfeeding promotes anxiety, impairs episodic-like memory, and disrupts transcriptional regulation of hippocampal steroidogenic enzymes.

The objective of our study was to investigate the impact of neonatal overfeeding on cognitive functions and neurosteroidogenesis in male rats. Offspring were assigned to either small litters (SL; 4 pups/mother), resulting in increased milk intake and body weight gain, or normal litters (NL; 10 pups/mother). On postnatal day (PND) 21, half of the male rats were euthanized, while the remaining were kept under standard conditions (4 rats/cage) until PND70. At this stage, subjects underwent assessments for locomotor activity, anxiety levels via the elevated plus maze, and episodic-like memory (ELM

Overfeeding in the early postnatal period aggravates inflammation and hepatic insulin sensitivity in the 5α-dihydrotestosterone-induced animal model of PCOS.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age and is closely associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. To clarify the contribution of prepubertal weight gain to the development of insulin resistance in PCOS, we investigated the effects of early postnatal overfeeding on inflammatory and energy-sensing pathways as well as on markers of insulin signaling in the liver of the PCOS rat model. METHODS: Obesity induced by overfeeding was achieved by reducing litter size, while the PCOS-like condition was de

Differential gene expression in neonatal calf muscle tissues from Hanwoo cows overfed during mid to late pregnancy period.

Maternal nutrition significantly influences fetal development and postnatal outcomes. This study investigates the impact of maternal overfeeding during mid to late pregnancy on gene expression in the round and sirloin muscles of Hanwoo neonatal calves. Eight cows were assigned to either a control group receiving standard nutrition (100%) or a treated group receiving overnutrition (150%). After birth, tissue samples from the round and sirloin muscles of neonatal calves were collected and subjected to RNA sequencing to assess differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RNA sequencing identified 43 DE

Early Life Energy Balance: The Development of Infant Energy Expenditure and Intake in the Context of Obesity.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to provide a summary of the current knowledge on measurement tools and most recent evidence for prenatal and postnatal modulators of energy balance in young infants. RECENT FINDINGS: The prevention of pediatric obesity depends upon curating the perfect imbalance of energy intake to energy expenditure, taking into consideration the energy needs for healthy growth. We summarize the recent evidence for the programming of fetal and infant metabolism influenced by maternal preconception health, prenatal metabolic milieu, and physical activity behaviors. In the e

Maternal Early Overfeeding Negatively Impacts Cardiac Progenitor Cell Differentiation and Cardiomyocyte Maturation in the Neonatal Offspring.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal obesity has been positively correlated with an increased cardiometabolic risk in the offspring throughout life, implying intergenerational transmission. However, little is known about the early-life cardiac cell modifications that imply the onset of heart diseases later in life. This study analyzed cardiac progenitor cells and cardiomyocyte differentiation on day of birth in the offspring born to obese dams. METHODS: The litter size reduction model was used to induce obesity in female Swiss mice. Both maternal groups, the Small Litter Dams (SLD-F1), which were overfed d

Neonatal overfeeding attenuates microgliosis and hippocampal damage in an infant rat model of pneumococcal meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal meningitis (PM) triggers apoptotic neuronal and progenitor cell death in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG), resulting in subsequent cognitive impairment. Microglia play a crucial role in PM-induced hippocampal damage. While the lasting effects of neonatal nutrition on health are well documented, the influence of early-life overfeeding on the host response to neuroinfections remains uncertain. This study aimed to examine whether neonatal overfeeding affects the outcome of PM in the hippocampus (HC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Overfeeding was induced by adjusting litter siz

Neonatal overnutritional programming impairs the hypophagia and neuron activation induced by acute lipopolysaccharide in adult male rats.

Nutritional status during critical windows in early development can challenge metabolic functions and physiological responses to immune stress in adulthood, such as the systemic inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of post-natal over- and undernutrition on the anorexigenic effect of LPS and its association with neuronal activation in the brainstem and hypothalamus of male rats. Animals were raised in litters of 3 (small - SL), 10 (normal - NL), or 16 (large - LL) pups per dam. On post-natal day 60, male rats were treat
