The infant's ability to self-regulate caloric intake: a case study.

A case study which illustrates the infant's ability to regulate caloric intake through adjustments in formula intake is presented. A daily record of infant formula and supplemental food intake of a normal, bottle-fed male infant was kept from 1 week to 9 months after birth. The infant's physical growth was assessed at regular intervals. Measurements included weight, recumbent length, head circumference, and skinfold thicknesses. Feeding was ad libitum, and caregivers were highly responsive to the infant's satiety behaviors. Under these conditions, the infant adjusted his caloric intake as supp

The effect of over-feeding newborn rabbits on somatic and visceral growth, body composition and long-term growth potential.

Newborn rabbits were over-fed by encouraging them to suck from two lactating does. These double-fed animals were compared with single-fed litter-mate controls. Single- and double-fed rabbits were compared with respect to body-weight, bone length and weights of heart, kidney, lung, liver, spleen, stomach, brain and adipose lobes at ages 7, 14 and 21 d and at 25 weeks. Body composition with respect to fat, protein and water was also analysed in animals killed during the first month of life. Double feeding had a profound effect on body-weight, such that by 21 d of age these animals weighed 65% mo

Feeding in infancy, adipose tissue cellularity and obesity.

Female Sprague-Dawley rats were raised in litters of four (L4), nine (L9) and 24 (L24). The well nourished L4 rats grew insignificantly larger, heavier and fatter than the L9 controls; the underfed L24 rats remained small and stunted, and had absolutely and relatively less adipose tissue than the L4 and L9 rats. Approximately half of the rats of these three groups were fed a high-fat diet from age 18 to 43 weeks. Almost all of the rats in the fat-fed groups became obese. The amount of adipose tissue expressed as percent body weight was essentially the same in all three fat-fed groups, with the

Nutrient intake patterns and nutritional status with regard to relative weight in early infancy.

To examine whether or not obesity in later life is related to feeding practice in early infancy, daily nutrient intake was studied in relation to relative weight in a cohort of 170 healthy infants from birth to 3 yr of age. Dietary records were made monthly for the first 6 months and at 3-monthly intervals thereafter, always covering the week preceding anthropometric measurements. The frequency distribution of relative weight varied according to age and sex; the infants did not remain in the same relative weight group during the observed period. When comparing the relative weight at 6 and 36 m

[Obesity in children. III. Feeding pattern in relation to the possible development of obesity].

It appears from literature that obesity among breastfed infants is less prevalent than among over bottle fed infants. There is conflicting understanding as to a significant contribution of infant food habits to lasting obesity. Attention for prudent food intake seems to be particularly indicated when one of the parents or both are obese. Too early introduction of solids in addition to milk formula does probably not contribute too much to infants overfeeding, but enlarges the risk for early manifestation of allergies or coeliac disease and for restricted iron absorption. The food pattern of tod

Heart failure apparently due to overfeeding in a neonate.

Severe heart failure in a one-month-old infant is described, apparently due to the administration of cows' milk in the region of 300 ml/kg per day. There was also pronounced hypocalcaemia. The infant responded rapidly to treatment with no evidence of intrinsic heart disease.

Infant feeding and subcutaneous fat at birth and at one year.

Skin folds were measured at birth and at 1 year in infants who were obese, normal or thin at birth, infants of obese mothers and infants of diabetic mothers. There was no significant correlation between skinfold thickness at birth and skinfold thickness at 1 year and there was no significant difference in skinfold thickness between any of the groups at 1 year of age. These findings are not consistent with the hypothesis that overnutrition in the last 10 weeks of pregnancy has a permanent effect on the adiposity of the infant. The distributions of triceps and subscapular skinfolds in these 1-ye

[Early postnatal overfeeding as an etiopathogenetic factor in adult obesity].

In 114 men and to a less degree in 111 women, significant positive relations were found between the weight gain during the first trimenon of postnatal life and the body weight per body length in adulthood. In contrast, there were not observed any significant relations between birth weight, birth length or weight gain during the second trimenon of postnatal life and the body weight per body length in adulthood. These findings suggest that over-nutrition during the first three months of life may be considered an essential risk factor for the development of obesity and its complications.
