Early infant feeding and allergic respiratory diseases in Ibb city, Yemen.

BACKGROUND: Allergic respiratory diseases (ARD) are a highly prevalent health problem affecting infants and children in Yemen. Early infant feeding predisposition to the development of ARD has been a controversial question. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between early feeding before 6 months of age and the development of ARD among children attending Childhood and Maternity Public Hospital (CMPH), Ibb, Yemen Republic. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The study population included 151 child patients attending the pediatric clinic at CMPH. Upon clinical and laboratory examinations,

Interpretable prediction of necrotizing enterocolitis from machine learning analysis of premature infant stool microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a common, potentially catastrophic intestinal disease among very low birthweight premature infants. Affecting up to 15% of neonates born weighing less than 1500 g, NEC causes sudden-onset, progressive intestinal inflammation and necrosis, which can lead to significant bowel loss, multi-organ injury, or death. No unifying cause of NEC has been identified, nor is there any reliable biomarker that indicates an individual patient's risk of the disease. Without a way to predict NEC in advance, the current medical strategy involves close clinical monito

Congenital Hyperinsulinism International: A Community Focused on Improving the Lives of People Living With Congenital Hyperinsulinism.

Congenital hyperinsulinism (HI) is a rare disease affecting newborns. HI causes severe hypoglycemia due to the overproduction of insulin. The signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia in HI babies is often not discovered until brain damage has already occurred. Prolonged hypoglycemia from HI can even lead to death. Disease management is often complex with a high burden on caregivers. Treatment options are extremely limited and often require long hospital stays to devise. Cascading from suboptimal treatments and diagnostic practices are a host of other problems and challenges that many with HI and the

Comparison of the effect of two methods of sucking on pacifier and mother's finger on oral feeding behavior in preterm infants: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Oral feeding problems will cause long-term hospitalization of the infant and increase the cost of hospitalization. This study aimed to compare the effect of two methods of sucking on pacifier and mother's finger on oral feeding behavior in preterm infants. METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in the neonatal intensive care unit of Babol Rouhani Hospital, Iran. 150 preterm infants with the gestational age of 31 to 33 weeks were selected and were divided into three groups of 50 samples using randomized block method, including non-nutritive su

Breast Milk and the Importance of Chrononutrition.

During pregnancy the human fetus receives timed cues from the circadian rhythms of temperature, metabolites, and hormones from the mother. This influence is interrupted after parturition, the infant does not secrete melatonin and their circadian rhythms are still immature. However, evolution provided the solution to this problem. The newborn can continue receiving the mother's timed cues through breastmilk. Colostrum, transitional, and mature human milk are extraordinary complex biofluids that besides nutrients, contain an array of other non-nutritive components. Upon birth the first milk, col

Enhancement of maternal-neonatal bonding during the COVID-19 pandemic: A quality improvement initiative.

AIM: The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected the essential care of newborns. In a tertiary care hospital in India, all COVID-19 suspect post-natal mothers awaiting COVID results were transferred to a ward shared with symptomatic COVID suspect female patients from other clinical specialities, due to shortage of space and functional health workforce. Babies born to COVID-19 suspect mothers were moved to a separate ward with a caretaker until their mothers tested negative. Due to shortage of beds and delay in receiving COVID results, mothers and babies were often discharged separately 2-3 days a

Increased Breastfeeding Proportion Is Associated with Improved Gross Motor Skills at 3-5 Years of Age: A Pilot Study.

Breastmilk provides key nutrients and bio-active factors that contribute to infant neurodevelopment. Optimizing maternal nutrition could provide further benefit to psychomotor outcomes. Our observational cohort pilot study aims to determine if breastfeeding extent and breastmilk nutrients correlate with psychomotor outcomes at school age. The breastfeeding proportion at 3 months of age and neurodevelopmental outcomes at 3-5 years of age were recorded for 33 typically developing newborns born after uncomplicated pregnancies. The association between categorical breastfeeding proportion and neuro

[Nasal toilet in infants with rhinitis: nasal passage crucial, so treat with xylometazoline].

A good nasal passage is crucial for neonates and infants, as they rely on obligate nasal breathing. Feeding problems and dyspnoea are commonly seen in infants with nasal obstruction. In this article, we emphasize the importance of relieving nasal congestion caused by an infection. An effective therapy to reduce nasal obstruction, caused by mucus, is rinsing with saline. Xylometazoline can be added if the effect of saline is insufficient. However, guidelines are often cautious with prescribing nasal decongestants in infants. These recommendations are mainly based on case reports, and often conce

Swallowing-related quality of life in children with oesophageal atresia: a national cohort study.

UNLABELLED: Swallowing and feeding disorders are a major concern for children with oesophageal atresia (OA) after primary or staged OA repair. Primary OA repair is associated with higher rates of short-term complications in preterm infants with very low birth weight (VLBW) or extreme low birth weight (ELBW). On the other hand, primary repair may have the benefit of early commencement of oral feedings. We hypothesize that also in the medium-term, swallowing-related quality of life is better after primary oesophageal repair. We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study on swallowing quality

A Narrative Review of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) and Its Effects on and Benefits for Low Birth Weight (LBW) Babies.

Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a preventative, economical method for infants with low birth weight (LBW). KMC benefits LBW infants in a number of ways. This review standpoints the effect of KMC on the weight gain of LBW neonates. KMC also improves breastfeeding rates during the hospital stay as well as at home. KMC can be provided not only by mothers but also by fathers and other adults in the family. However, it is not routinely practiced in hospitals. Short-term and long-term KMC is beneficial for survival, neurodevelopment, breastfeeding, and mother-infant bonding. Preterm infants are more l

Assessment of neonatal thermal cares: Practices and beliefs among rural women in West Guji Zone, South Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

A newborn has a limited capacity to maintain temperature when exposed to cold environment. Neonatal hypothermia, a common neonatal problem, carries high case fatality rate particularly if concurrently occurs with other neonatal problems. This study assessed neonatal thermal care practices and beliefs among rural women in west Guji Zone, south Ethiopia. A community based cross sectional quantitative study combined with qualitative study was undertaken in rural areas of west Guji Zone, Ethiopia. Randomly selected 388 rural mothers of infants less than 6 months old were participated in the quanti

Postdischarge Nutrition of Preterm Infants: Breastfeeding, Complementary Foods, Eating Behavior and Feeding Problems.

In preterm infants, the key goals of nutrition are to establish adequate growth and to contribute to appropriate neurodevelopmental outcome. In this context, the postdischarge period is crucial to establish catch-up growth and avoid wrong metabolic programming caused by overfeeding. Breastfeeding is strongly recommended, and for preterm infants the European Society for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) suggests fortifying breastmilk after discharge up to term in appropriate growing infants and up to 3 months in growth-retarded infants. If breastfeeding is not possible, post

Neonatal withdrawal syndrome following in utero exposure to antidepressants: a disproportionality analysis of VigiBase, the WHO spontaneous reporting database.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on neonatal withdrawal syndrome following antidepressant intrauterine exposure is limited, particularly for antidepressants other than selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs). METHODS: In our case/non-case pharmacovigilance study, based on VigiBase®, the WHO database of suspected adverse drug reactions, we estimated reporting odds ratio (ROR) and the Bayesian information component (IC) with 95% confidence/credibility intervals (CI) as measures of disproportionate reporting of antidepressant-related neonatal withdrawal syndrome. Antidepressants were first compared t

Development of a nutritional risk screening tool for preterm children in outpatient settings during a complementary feeding period: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A complementary feeding (CF) period is necessary for nutritional and developmental reasons. Preterm children encounter more feeding problems than their term counterparts in the CF period. The goal of this study was to develop a nutritional risk screening tool specific to preterm children (the NRSP) in outpatient settings in the CF period, with the expectation of providing a standardised process to determine feeding problems and subsequently offering targeted nutritional advice. METHODS: This study was a 2-phase study consisting of the development and evaluation phases. In the deve

Efficacy of Donated Milk in Early Nutrition of Preterm Infants: A Meta-Analysis.

Background: Preterm birth is associated with an increased risk of many complications, which is a main public health problem worldwide with social and economic consequences. Human milk from breast feeding has been proved to be the optimal nutrition strategy for preterm infants when available. However, the lack of human milk from mothers makes formula widely used in clinical practice. In recent years, donated breast milk has gained popularity as an alternative choice which can provide human milk oligosaccharides and other bioactive substances. Objective: We aimed to conduct a systematic review a

Perceived insufficient milk among primiparous, fully breastfeeding women: Is infant crying important?

Breastfeeding mothers often report perceived insufficient milk (PIM) believing their infant is crying too much, which leads to introducing formula and the early abandonment of breastfeeding. We sought to determine if infant crying was associated with reported PIM (yes/no) and number of problems associated with lactation (lactation problem score [LPS] 6-point Likert scale) before formula introduction. Primiparous breastfeeding mothers were recruited at birth and visited at 1, 2 and 4 weeks. Among those fully breastfeeding at 1 week (N = 230), infant crying variables based on maternal reports we

Use of donor human milk in nonhospitalized infants: An infant growth study.

When mother's own milk (MOM) is unavailable or insufficient, donor human milk (DHM) is recommended as the next best alternative for low birthweight infants. DHM use for healthy, term infants is increasing, but evidence for growth and tolerability is limited. This retrospective study evaluated growth in term infants in the community who received DHM from a UK milk bank. Mothers of infants receiving DHM between 2017 and 2019 were contacted (n = 49), and 31 (63.2%) agreed to participate. Fourteen infants received DHM as a supplement to other feeds (MOM and/or infant formula) and 17 were exclusive
