Newborn Health Indicators Associated with Maternal Age during First Pregnancy.

Delaying motherhood is becoming increasingly common, raising questions of the possible influence that maternal age may have on newborn health. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the association between maternal age and different newborn health parameters. An observational study was conducted in Spain on primiparous women and their infants. Data were collected on newborn health variables, breastfeeding, and different clinical practices that are beneficial for child health and development. Crude and adjusted mean differences were calculated along with the standard error of t

What are women stressed about after birth?

BACKGROUND: Having a baby is associated with a variety of stressors, change, and adjustment. This study aimed to identify what women find stressful during the early postpartum period in contemporary Western society. METHODS: Women (n = 148) 6-12 weeks postpartum wrote anonymously about a situation they found stressful as part of the Health after Birth Trial (HABiT) of expressive writing. Transcripts were analyzed for categories of stressors and cross-cutting themes. RESULTS: Five categories of stressors were identified. Stressors in pregnancy, labor, and the early postpartum period (49.3%) i

Mother's Own Milk Feeding and Severity of Respiratory Illness in Acutely Ill Children: An Integrative Review.

PROBLEM: Breastfed infants experience less severe infections while actively breastfeeding. However, little is known about whether a history of prior breastfeeding affects severity of illness. Therefore, the purpose of this integrative review was to examine the relationship between previous exposure to mother's own milk (MOM) feeding and severity of respiratory infectious illness in infants and children. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies meeting the following criteria were included: human subjects, term birth, ages 0-35 months at time of study, diagnosis of pneumonia, bronchiolitis or croup, MOM f

Risks of maternal prepregnancy overweight/obesity, excessive gestational weight gain, and bottle-feeding in infancy rapid weight gain: evidence from a cohort study in China.

Rapid weight gain (RWG) in infants is associated with numerous health problems, and its risk factors are still unclear. We assessed 98,097 maternal-infant pairs from a population-based cohort study and followed up with them until the infants were 6 months old. We assessed the associations between maternal prepregnancy weight status; gestational weight gain; feeding pattern; and infants' RWG at 0-1, 0-3, 1-3, and 3-6 months using multivariate unconditional logistic regression models, with controlled confounders. We found that maternal prepregnancy weight status, gestational weight gain, and fee

Maternal Dairy Consumption and Hematochezia in Exclusively Breastfed Infants.

BACKGROUND: When an exclusively breastfed infant develops hematochezia, the pediatrician may recommend elimination of dairy and soy products from a mother's diet, but there is limited scientific evidence to indicate that altering the maternal diet will lead to resolution of the problem. RESEARCH AIM: To estimate the likelihood that maternal dairy and soy avoidance will resolve rectal bleeding in an exclusively breastfed infant. METHODS: This was a prospective, longitudinal, one-group pre/post study involving mothers of exclusively breastfed infants at least 2 weeks but less than 6 months of

Philippines Case Study: Government Policies on Nutrition Education.

Government policies at the national and local levels are central to the promotion, protection, and implementation of sound food and nutrition concepts in the Philippines. According to the 2015 national nutrition survey, persistent malnutrition problems, such as protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and iodine-deficiency disorders), continue to afflict a major proportion of Filipinos. In the Philippines, nutrition education and promotion date back as early as 1900 with the conduct of educational campaigns directed towards the prevention and co

Pathogenic variants in USP7 cause a neurodevelopmental disorder with speech delays, altered behavior, and neurologic anomalies.

PURPOSE: Haploinsufficiency of USP7, located at chromosome 16p13.2, has recently been reported in seven individuals with neurodevelopmental phenotypes, including developmental delay/intellectual disability (DD/ID), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), seizures, and hypogonadism. Further, USP7 was identified to critically incorporate into the MAGEL2-USP7-TRIM27 (MUST), such that pathogenic variants in USP7 lead to altered endosomal F-actin polymerization and dysregulated protein recycling. METHODS: We report 16 newly identified individuals with heterozygous USP7 variants, identified by genome or ex

A sparse covarying unit that describes healthy and impaired human gut microbiota development.

Characterizing the organization of the human gut microbiota is a formidable challenge given the number of possible interactions between its components. Using a statistical approach initially applied to financial markets, we measured temporally conserved covariance among bacterial taxa in the microbiota of healthy members of a Bangladeshi birth cohort sampled from 1 to 60 months of age. The results revealed an "ecogroup" of 15 covarying bacterial taxa that provide a concise description of microbiota development in healthy children from this and other low-income countries, and a means for monito

Bacillus sp. probiotic supplementation diminish the Escherichia coli F4ac infection in susceptible weaned pigs by influencing the intestinal immune response, intestinal microbiota and blood metabolomics.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is frequently associated with type II mixed cryoglobulinaemia (MC), a benign lymphoproliferative disease (LPD). More recently, HCV has been implicated as a possible aetiologic factor of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). CD81, a B-cell surface receptor, has been proposed as a receptor for HCV binding and entry in circulating B cells. The stimulation of CD81 complex enables B cells to respond to lower concentrations of antigen and finally induces B-cell proliferation. We studied the phenotypic expression of CD81, CD19 and CD5 on circulating B cells in

Pharmacological Treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder During Pregnancy and Lactation.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral problem found in 2-5% of adults. Stimulants and drugs that affect the dopaminergic, noradrenergic and/or serotonergic systems are effective treatment and are increasingly prescribed to women at child bearing age. It is consequently important that reliable information on the safety of these drugs in pregnancy is available so that appropriate therapeutic choices can be made. RESULTS: The data on stimulants (methylphenidate and amphetamines) are generally showing that there is no increase in the rate of major cong

The Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale: Relationships with parental report of child eating behaviours and observed feeding interactions.

UNLABELLED: Feeding problems are common, with implications for nutrition, growth and family stress, placing burden on primary care services. The Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale (MCHFS) is a quick and reliable measure of feeding problems for clinical settings, but there is little examination of its relationship to commonly used research measures of parental feeding practice, child eating behaviour and observations of parent-infant interaction at mealtimes. We examined the relationships between the MCHFS, demographics and early feeding history, weight across the first year, parental r

Gastro-oesophageal reflux: a mixed methods study of infants admitted to hospital in the first 12 months following birth in NSW (2000-2011).

BACKGROUND: Gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) is common in infants. When the condition causes pathological symptoms and/or complications it is considered gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). It appears to be increasingly diagnosed and causes great distress in the first year of infancy. In New South Wales (NSW), residential parenting services support families with early parenting difficulties. These services report a large number of babies admitted with a label of GOR/GORD. The aim of this study was to explore the maternal and infant characteristics, obstetric interventions, and reasons for

The effect of medical and operative birth interventions on child health outcomes in the first 28 days and up to 5 years of age: A linked data population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous vaginal birth rates are decreasing worldwide, while cesarean delivery, instrumental births, and medical birth interventions are increasing. Emerging evidence suggests that birth interventions may have an effect on children's health. Therefore, the aim of our study was to examine the association between operative and medical birth interventions on the child's health during the first 28 days and up to 5 years of age. METHODS: In New South Wales (Australia), population-linked data sets were analyzed, including data on maternal characteristics, child characteristics, mode

Educational interventions for improving primary caregiver complementary feeding practices for children aged 24 months and under.

BACKGROUND: Although complementary feeding is a universal practice, the methods and manner in which it is practiced vary between cultures, individuals and socioeconomic classes. The period of complementary feeding is a critical time of transition in the life of an infant, and inappropriate complementary feeding practices, with their associated adverse health consequences, remain a significant global public health problem. Educational interventions are widely acknowledged as effective in promoting public health strategy, and those aimed at improving complementary feeding practices provide infor

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 742: Postpartum Pain Management.

Pain and fatigue are the most common problems reported by women in the early postpartum period. Pain can interfere with a woman's ability to care for herself and her infant. Untreated pain is associated with a risk of greater opioid use, postpartum depression, and development of persistent pain. Nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic therapies are important components of postpartum pain management. Because 81% of women in the United States initiate breastfeeding during the postpartum period, it is important to consider the drug effects of all prescribed medications on the mother-infant dyad. Evaluation of a Designated Family Bonding Time to Decrease Interruptions and Increase Exclusive Breastfeeding.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to plan and implement a daily family bonding time on our mother/baby care unit and evaluate its effect on interruptions, mothers' perceptions of interruptions, and exclusive breastfeeding rates. DESIGN: A separate sample pre-/postintervention design conducted in three phases. SETTING/LOCAL PROBLEM: Healthy breastfeeding newborns had double the odds of receiving supplementation before discharge if they stayed more than 1 night or were born at night. Night nurses suggested implementing a daily quiet time as a strategy for limiting
