Rhinosporidiosis is a rare granulomatous disease affecting the nasal mucosa, nasopharynx, skin and eyes due to Rhinosporidium seeberi. Lacrimal Sac involvement is very rare. Hence, we report an unusal presentation of rhinosporidiosis in lacrimal sac area in an adult male patient who presented with painless boggy swelling in lacrimal sac area with positive history of bath in pond and diagnosis was confirmed with histopathological examination. To prevent the recurrence, the patient was treated with 5% Povidone Iodine intra operatively and use of oral Dapsone (100 mg/day) for three months post-op

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection due to Rhinosporidium seeberi and it is endemic mainly in South Asian countries such as India and Sri Lanka. Though it commonly involves nasal and nasopharyngeal mucosa, the involvement of the lacrimal sac is rare. Diagnosis can be done by imaging techniques and confirmed on histopathology.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old male presented with left nasal obstruction and an oropharyngeal mass, without any ocular symptoms. Imaging studies by CT scan revealed a mass involving the nasal and nasolacrimal regions. Bio

Eosinophilia, defined as an elevated eosinophil count either in blood or tissue, has diverse implications for diagnosing and managing various diseases. Elevated eosinophil levels are often associated with conditions such as allergic reactions, autoimmune disorders, and specific infections. In the realm of head and neck pathology, eosinophilia can offer valuable insights into underlying infectious processes, which are often challenging to diagnose due to their overlap with other inflammatory and allergic conditions. This review describes the roles of blood and tissue eosinophilia in several inf

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease mainly affecting the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. It is an endemic disease in South India. Its incidence in the UK is very low. In this case report, a male patient presented with a 6-month history of foreign body sensation and feeling of a lump in the right nostril with occasional epistaxis. Clinical examination revealed a fleshy polypoidal mass in the right nasal cavity. CT showed a mass arising from the right inferior turbinate without bone erosion. He underwent endoscopic excision of the right nasal mass, and histopathology confirmed it a

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, mainly affecting the nose and nasopharynx. We report a sporadic occurrence of conjunctival rhinosporidiosis that mimicked papilloma in a 10-year-old Ethiopian child. Rhinosporidiosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of conjunctival lesions. Histopathology is necessary for a definitive diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Rhinosporidiosis is a polypoidal disease of mucocutaneous tissues mainly affecting the nose. Rhinosporidium seeberi is believed to be the causative pathogen; however, the exact identity remains obscure. The main symptoms of the disease include the presence of mass, discharge, epistaxis, and nasal obstruction. The disease is characterized by friable polyps mostly pink to purple giving typical strawberry- or raspberry-like appearance. The infection is caused by bathing in ponds having stagnant waters. Disease is more common in people of lower socioeconomic status. There is no effecti

We report a very rare case of tracheal rhinosporidiosis having multiple sites of involvement in the tracheal lumen, almost completely obstructing the lumen near the carina, which was removed by using peripheral cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) with a multidisciplinary team approach involving the ENT and cardiothoracic vascular surgery (CTVS) departments. Since the location of the mass was in the lower trachea and there was a higher risk of bleeding, CPB was done. An open approach was considered for the surgery. A U-shaped neck incision was given, and the trachea was opened at the level of the thir

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis, with nil or minor nasal extensions, rarely presents as an acquired cutaneous fistula in the periocular area. The correct diagnosis in such cases can be challenging, leading to repeated failure of conservative or surgical interventions.
CASE SUMMARY: A 39-year-old female presented with a 6-year history of swelling in the periocular area, specifically in the left lacrimal sac area. Symptoms were limited to epiphora and constant mucoid discharge from the fistula, clinically mimicking chronic lacrimal sac fistula. She had a history of treatment with mult

The increasing prevalence of immunosuppressive diseases, the increase in the elderly population, and globalization have led to the urgent need for research on the epidemiology and prevalence of fungi that cause mycoses in Brazil and worldwide. This is especially important, in the case of Brazil, for the South region, which currently lacks updated data on the subject. To this end, the objective was to investigate fungi diagnosed in mycoses by a laboratory in the city of Pelotas, South of Brazil. An observational and analytical survey was conducted for three years to analyze fungal diagnoses in

Fungal infections affect 2% of Malaysia's population, yet little is known about mycology laboratory practices in the country. This study surveyed 48 medical institutions, including 14 state hospitals, 26 major specialist hospitals, 4 minor specialist hospitals, 3 university hospitals, and 1 reference laboratory, to assess current practices and identify areas for improvement. Nearly all hospitals performed germ tube testing for Candida albicans (87.5%, 42/48). Yeast identification was conducted using API® (52%, 25/48) or VITEK® (52%, 25/48), with two institutions employing both methods. Advance

We report the first case of phaeohyphomycosis caused by the dematiaceous dimorphic fungus Exophiala spinifera in a free-roaming domestic cat from the Americas, specifically diagnosed in the Central-West Region of Brazil, which progressed to euthanasia due to severe clinical deterioration. A comprehensive diagnostic approach was employed, integrating epidemiological, clinical, laboratory, mycological, and molecular analyses to confirm the fungal infection. In addition to the fungal infection, the cat tested seropositive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and was suspected of having seromuc

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of invasive fungal infections (IFI) is increasing globally, with approximately 6,500,000 cases of IFI per year and 3,800,000 deaths. Most IFI deaths are attributable to opportunistic mycoses, such as Aspergillus and Candida. However, changes in climate and travel are leading to rising rates of endemic mycoses. Compounding this burden is the rise of antifungal drug resistance, requiring the development of new agents.
AREAS COVERED: Data were identified using PubMed searches for the terms 'antifungal,' 'olorofim,' 'SUBA-itraconazole,' 'ibrexafungerp,' 'rezafungin,'

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have gained prominence in the scientific literature as potential antifungal therapeutic agents, especially those obtained through biological synthesis, due to their superior physicochemical properties. This review examines formulations and patents incorporating AgNPs with antifungal activity, focusing on their applicability in the treatment of mycoses, particularly in vivo. Comparative data on the mechanism of action of AgNPs in planktonic cells and biofilms are presented, as well as transcriptional analyses in fungi exposed to these nanoparticles. The results demo

BACKGROUND: Infectious endophthalmitis following penetrating ocular trauma represents an acute and often blinding disease with a generally poor prognosis. The causative pathogens involved are diverse, among which bacterial organisms are the most prevalent. In contrast, infections caused by fungi of the order Mucorales are rare, constituting acute and fulminant opportunistic mycoses. These fungal infections are characterized by an insidious onset and are associated with an exceedingly high mortality rate, particularly in patients with comorbid diabetes mellitus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old

Papiliotrema laurentii (formerly known as Cryptococcus laurentii) is an environmental saprophytic yeast that rarely causes disease in humans, mainly in immunosuppressed patients. We present a case of nosocomial pulmonary mycosis due to Papiliotrema laurentii in a 51-year-old male patient with a COVID-19 infection and a history of untreated type 2 diabetes mellitus. During his hospital stay, he received intravenous fluconazole for two weeks, with a favorable outcome. He was discharged with oral fluconazole for three months and follow-up in an outpatient clinic. One month after hospital discharg
