INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic infectious disease caused by an infection with the sporulating bacterium rhinosporidium seeberi. It mostly affects the nose and nasopharynx mucous membranes, but it can also affect the conjunctiva uncommonly. Ocular rhinosporidiosis is most commonly shown as a polypoid tumor in the palpebral conjunctiva. It affects people of all ages and genders. This case is important because there are few case reports in the world, and it is the second case to be reported from Ethiopia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old boy presented with painless, r

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease affecting mucosal membranes, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. This case report presents a young male from Santhal Pargana, Jharkhand, who presented with nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and a mass in the right nasal cavity. Surgical excision and histopathological analysis confirmed rhinosporidiosis. Although no definitive medical treatment exists, surgical excision with cauterization remains the most effective method to prevent recurrence. This report marks the first documentation of nasal rhinosporidiosis in Santhal Pargana, Jh

Although not as well studied as the bacterial component of the human microbiota, the commensal fungi or mycobiota play important roles in maintaining our health by augmenting our immune system. This mycobiota is also associated with various fatal diseases like opportunistic mycoses, and even cancer, with different cancers having respective type-specific mycobiota. The different fungal species which comprise these different intratumoral mycobiota play important roles in cancer progression. The aim of this review paper is to decipher the association between mycobiota and cancer, and shed light o

Mucormycosis, a group of opportunistic mycoses caused by Mucorales, present a significant threat to immunocompromised patients. In this report, we present the case of a 57-year-old male patient who underwent liver transplant for secondary biliary cirrhosis following inadvertent bile duct injury. Despite initial satisfactory postoperative evolution, the patient developed fever, and imaging revealed a suspicious lesion. Preliminary culture growth suggested a filamentous fungus, leading to initiation of liposomal amphotericin B. However, the lesion progressed, and a surgical debridement was neces

Recognizing the growing global burden of fungal infections, the World Health Organization established a process to develop a priority list of fungal pathogens (FPPL). In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and impact of invasive infections caused by Aspergillus fumigatus to inform the first FPPL. The pre-specified criteria of mortality, inpatient care, complications and sequelae, antifungal susceptibility, risk factors, preventability, annual incidence, global distribution, and emergence were used to search for relevant articles between 1 January 2016 and 10 June 2021

We report a patient with lobomycosis caused by Paracoccidioides loboi fungi in the Andes-Amazon region of Bolivia. We examined clinical, epidemiologic, and phylogenetic data and describe potential transmission/environmental aspects of infection. Continued surveillance and identification of lobomycosis cases in South America are crucial to prevent the spread of this disease.

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic neglected fungal disease, usually met in tropical areas. French Guiana is a South American territory with limited epidemiological data. This retrospective study concerned all patients with CBM proven by at least one paraclinical examination and diagnosed in French Guiana between 1950 and 2023. In total, 23 patients were included, mostly males (87%) of Creole origin, living in the coastal region (87%) and involved in outdoor occupations (74%). Lesions were mostly observed on the lower limbs (78.3%), with a median time to diagnosis of four years. Laboratory

In this part 2 of a 2-part continuing medical education series, the management, outcomes, and morbidities for fungal skin neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including eumycetoma, chromoblastomycosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, sporotrichosis, emergomycosis, talaromycosis, and lobomycosis are reviewed. While fungal skin NTDs are associated with poverty in resource-limited settings, they are more often associated with immunosuppression and global migration in the United States. These infections have a high morbidity burden, including disfigurement, physical disability, coinfection, malignant trans

Lobomycosis, also called paracoccidioidomycosis ceti, is a chronic mycotic cutaneous disease affecting odontocetes. Lobomycosis-like disease (LLD) has a clinical presentation consistent with lobomycosis but lacks a histological and molecular diagnosis. We review the literature on lobomycosis aetiology, clinical signs and pathogenesis, species affected and geographic distribution and examine the factors influencing the presence, transmission and prevalence of the disease, to better understand its ecology. In addition, we provide unpublished information on LLD in two common bottlenose dolphin (T

INTRODUCTION: Deep mycoses acquired by penetrating trauma to the skin can have varied and sometimes atypical morphological presentations resulting in diagnostic dilemmas and delay in treatment onset. Histopathology can be a useful tool in not only diagnosing but also differentiating various deep mycoses.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To observe various morphological presentations and histopathological features of deep fungal infections.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective multi-centric study was conducted from 2010 to 2020 at 16 centres. The cases with diagnoses of various deep mycoses were includ

Hyalohyphomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis are groups of mycoses caused by several agents and show different clinical manifestations. We report a case of an immunocompromised patient who presented rare manifestations of opportunistic mycoses: mycetoma-like hyalohyphomycosis on his right foot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, followed by cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis on his right forearm caused by Exophiala oligosperma. Further to the rarity of this case, the patient's lesion on the foot shows that the clinical aspects of mycetomas could falsely appear in other fungal infections similar to h

Jorge Lobo's disease (JLD) and lepromatous leprosy (LL) share several clinical, histological and immunological features, especially a deficiency in the cellular immune response. Macrophages participate in innate and adaptive inflammatory immune responses, as well as in tissue regeneration and repair. Macrophage function deficiency results in maintenance of diseases. M1 macrophages produce pro-inflammatory mediators and M2 produce anti-inflammatory cytokines. To better understand JLD and LL pathogenesis, we studied the immunophenotype profile of macrophage subtypes in 52 JLD skin lesions, in co

Rhinosporidiosis is one of the granulomatous diseases endemic in Asia, Africa, and Europe, with Southern India and Sri Lanka having the greatest prevalence rates. It is typically understood to affect the upper respiratory system. Involvement of the lungs beyond the trachea is infrequent as compared to the upper respiratory tract. We revealed an uncommon case of disseminated rhinosporidiosis in a diabetic patient, who initially presented with shortness of breath associated with cough and fever. Two months prior to these symptoms, he was having oral ulcer and dysphagia and, subsequently, loss of
