Microparticles in Pregnancy Complicated by Intrauterine Growth Restriction: A Systematic Review of Literature.

Background and Objectives: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) affects 5-10% of pregnancies and is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and long-term complications for the neonate. Extracellular vesicles (EVs), and in particular, microparticles (MPs), have emerged as potential biomarkers of pregnancy complications; however, the literature on their role in neonates remains limited. To investigate the functional characteristics, concertation in maternal blood and potential role of MPs in IUGR. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Scopus and preprint servers were systematically searched for

Purchase of hormonal contraceptive methods after delivery: a population-based study from Finland.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum contraception start and use are important to avoid unplanned pregnancy and to optimise birth spacing. There is inconsistent knowledge concerning the background factors influencing the type and timing of contraceptive initiation and adherence after delivery. METHODS: This was a historic cohort study. We identified 26 650 women that delivered between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2019, using the Finnish Medical Birth Register. Postpartum follow-up time for each woman was 1 year. The primary outcome of the study was postpartum purchase of hormonal contraception from a pha

Association of First-Trimester Pan-Immune-Inflammation Value with Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis and Villitis of Unknown Etiology.

BACKGROUND: Chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) and villitis of unknown etiology (VUE) are immune-mediated placental disorders leading to adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study investigated whether first-trimester pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), a novel systemic inflammation marker, is associated with these conditions. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study (October 2022-August 2025) included 163 placentas (25 controls, 63 CHI, 75 VUE). First-trimester complete blood counts (<14 weeks) were used to calculate PIV = (neutrophil × platelet × monocyte)/lymphocyte. Histopatholog

Obstetrical and Neonatal Outcomes in Pregnant Individuals With Anxiety Disorders.

AIM: Anxiety disorders (AD) are increasingly prevalent among the general population and pregnant individuals. Previous research has supported evidence of adverse obstetrical and fetal outcomes associated with pregnancies affected by mental health conditions. However, these studies often combine multiple psychiatric disorders, making it difficult to delineate the specific contribution of ADs. The purpose of the current study is to characterize the impact of ADs on obstetrical and fetal/neonatal outcomes. METHODS: Data from the 2016-2021 Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, Nationwide Inpat

Blood-based indicators for pregnancy disorders: Advanced biophysical approaches.

Pregnancy disorders, including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, and intrauterine growth restriction, represent a significant global burden of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Early and accurate detection of these conditions remains a critical clinical challenge, as conventional diagnostic methods often lack the sensitivity and specificity required for timely intervention. Blood-based biomarkers have emerged as a promising avenue for non-invasive surveillance; however, their full diagnostic potential is only now being realized through the application of advanced biophy

Evaluation of Serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Placental Growth Factor (PlGF) Levels in Unexplained Early Pregnancy Loss: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Early pregnancy loss, defined as spontaneous termination of pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation or fetal weight below 500 g, remains a common obstetric complication. While several etiological factors, such as genetic abnormalities and uterine defects, are established, nearly half of the cases remain unexplained, necessitating exploration of underlying biochemical mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PlGF) in women with early pregnancy loss and healthy pregnant controls of similar ge

Low pain scores and high feasibility: the modified Wiebe block for pain reduction during IUD insertion.

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device (IUD) is a widely used method for reversible contraception. Research indicates that IUD insertion is frequently experienced as highly painful - an aspect often underrecognized by clinicians - particularly among younger, nulliparous women. Moreover, fear of a painful insertion is a major barrier for women considering an IUD. While pre-procedural oral analgesia is standard practice, it does not always provide sufficient pain relief, leaving many women in need of additional measures. METHODS: We developed the Modified Wiebe as a simplified and safer version of

Evaluation of Maternal Serum ELABELA Levels in Pregnancies Diagnosed With Abortus Imminens Between 8 and 14 Weeks of Gestation.

AIM: Abortus imminens is a common condition in early pregnancy characterized by vaginal bleeding with a closed cervix and viable intrauterine pregnancy. Current biochemical markers have limited accuracy in predicting pregnancy outcomes. ELABELA (also known as Apela or Toddler), a peptide involved in angiogenesis and placental development, may serve as a potential biomarker in early pregnancy complications. This study aimed to evaluate maternal serum ELABELA levels in pregnancies diagnosed with abortus imminens. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 45 pregnant women diagnos

Low-normal birthweight in the first pregnancy as a risk factor for small for gestational age in the second pregnancy: A matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent obstetric complications may stem from chronic placental dysfunction or maternal vulnerability, with potential worsening across successive pregnancies. Subtle intrauterine growth restriction in a first pregnancy, even within the appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) range, may signal underlying risk for subsequent adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether low-normal birthweight in a first AGA pregnancy is associated with increased risk of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) birth in the second pregnancy among women with two consecutive term singleton births. METHODS

Can Cord Entanglement Occur in Monochorionic Diamniotic Twins? A Rare Case of Spontaneous Septostomy of Dividing Membranes.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancies are known to be complicated, with monochorionic monoamniotic (MCMA) pregnancies holding more risks compared to dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) and monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) pregnancies. Cord entanglement is a common complication in the context of MCMA twins, however can this occur in MCDA twins? CASE: A 26-year-old woman was referred to a high-risk tertiary unit at 18 weeks gestation, where scan confirmed MCDA pregnancy. She was regularly followed up in clinic. After presenting at 29 weeks with preterm labor that was managed at the time; she later presented at

Comparative study of two protocols of induction of labor with DILAPAN-S devices in a situation of intra-uterine fetal death or medical termination of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Practices in induction of labor for medical termination of pregnancy or intra uterine fetal death are controverted. DILAPAN-S dilators are often used as an adjunction of oral prostaglandins to reduce the time of delivery, but protocols may differ between practicians. At the University Hospital of Saint-Etienne, the DILAPAN-S were applied the evening before induction until 2020, and the same day as misoprostol intake since 2022. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate these two protocols of induction of labor with DILAPAN-S, on the day before and on the same day as prostaglandins, on the reduction
