Cranial sutures have a changing role through ontogeny. They function as passive growth sites during active brain growth; after brain growth they may serve to dissipate biomechanical forces. A third function at the newborn stage allows mobility of these flexible, fibrous joints as a compensatory means to facilitate parturition. This is most discussed in the context of human parturition, and the apparent dilemma of passing a proportionally large fetus through the constraints of the female pelvis. To test the hypothesis that nonhuman primates also have flexible calvarial joints, we examined a sam

Cranial sutures are narrow mesenchymal tissues that connect skull bones to each other. Given that they serve as growth centers in the skull, these undifferentiated tissues play crucial roles in skull development. Cranial sutures are also of clinical importance, because the premature fusion of skull bones results in a pathological condition called craniosynostosis. In newborns, skull sutures are wide and straight; during adolescence, they become thinner and start winding to form an interdigitating pattern. From a functional aspect, as the degree of interdigitation becomes larger, the strength o

Approximately a hundred patients with terminal 10q deletions have been described. They present with a wide range of clinical features always accompanied by delayed development, intellectual disability and craniofacial dysmorphisms. Here, we report a girl and a boy with craniosynostosis, developmental delay and other congenital anomalies. Karyotyping and molecular analysis including Multiplex Ligation dependent probe amplification (MLPA) and Array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) were performed in both patients. We detected a 13.1 Mb pure deletion at 10q26.12-q26.3 in the girl and a 10.

OBJECT: The authors present the results of treating infants with multiple-suture nonsyndromic craniosynostosis in whom the authors used minimally invasive endoscopy-assisted techniques and postoperative cranial molding over an 11-year period.
METHODS: A total of 21 patients who presented with multiple-suture (nonsyndromic) craniosynostosis were treated using minimally invasive endoscopy-assisted craniectomies. Surgery was followed by treatment with custommade cranial orthoses for up to 12 months. A total of 48 sutures were treated. The most common was the coronal suture (38 cases) and this wa

INTRODUCTION: Craniosynostosis is a condition characterized by a premature closure of one or more skull sutures and refers to a wide spectrum of cranial malformation with an estimated birth of 1:2,000-1:4,000 live births. Four receptors (FGFR 1, FGFR 2, FGFR 3, FGFR 4) involving mutation in the fibroblast growth factor have been identified.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two cases occurred in the same family and diagnosed prenatally by means of ultrasound, and antenatal and postnatal MR imaging are reported. Molecular biology regarding identification of craniosynostosis type has been analyzed. A revi

Cranio-osteoarthropathy, clinically classified as a variant of primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, is a very rare autosomal-recessive condition characterized by delayed closure of the cranial sutures and fontanels, digital clubbing, arthropathy, and periostosis. Recently, mutations in the gene HPGD, which encodes the NAD(+)-dependent 15-hydroxyprostaglandin dehydrogenase, were reported in four families affected with primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and one family with autosomal-recessive isolated nail clubbing. We report the clinical and molecular findings in four patients from two fam

We describe a stillborn female with acrofacial dysostosis and frontonasal dysplasia. She had protrusion of the forehead, with marked hypertelorism and absence of the nose but with the rhinencephalon present. Autopsy showed wide cranial sutures, severe hydrocephalus with separation of the right and left hemispheres of the brain, preservation of the olfactory bulb and first and second cranial nerves. The child also had small kidneys bilaterally, rectal atresia and an absent anus with rectovaginal fistula. These clinical findings suggest a new form of acrofacial dysostosis.

In this communication is reported a neonate with Yunis Varon syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder, born to a consanguineously married couple who had microcephaly, wide cranial sutures, prominent eyes, hypertelorism, dysplastic ears, sparse hairs, cupid bow like upper lip with median pseudocleft and labio-gingival retraction. Bilateral hypoplasia of thumbs, absent great toes, short phalanges were other features. Additional features in this case included median pseudocleft unreported earlier and C.T. findings of underdeveloped gyri, ischemic changes in temperoparietal region and bilater

OBJECT: Endoscopic techniques were introduced 7 years ago for the surgical management of patients with sagittal synostosis. In this study of 139 patients with sagittal synostosis, the authors assessed the efficacy, safety, complications, and outcomes after performing endoscopy-assisted wide-vertex craniectomies with bitemporal and biparietal barrel stave osteotomies.
METHODS: The sample population consisted of a total of 99 boys and 40 girls who ranged in age from 0.4 to 9.2 months (mean 3.6 months). Two small incisions were made near the lambda and vertex. Using endoscopic visualization, wid

CBFB at 16q22 heterodimerizes with either RUNX2 (also known as CBFA1) or RUNX1 (CBFA2) to activate the transcription of downstream molecules. RUNX2 regulates osteoblast differentiation and chondrocyte maturation and its haploinsufficiency leads to cleidocranial dysplasia, characterized large fontanelles, hypoplasia or aplasia of the clavicles, hypoplasia of the distal phalanges, and a wide pubic symphysis. Complete loss of Runx1 or Cbfb in mice is lethal because of the absence of fetal liver hematopoiesis. Fetal rescue in Cbfb(-/-) mice by providing the Cbfb functions in the hematopoietic prog

Assessment of the position and size of the metopic suture and anterior fontanelle is important in the routine examination during fetal period and in newborn infants. The aim of this study is to clarify the average size and its developmental changes of the anterior fontanelle and metopic suture by morphometry. Fifty-one cases were examined over a developmental period ranging from fetus of 14 weeks gestation to full term neonate. The width, and length of heads as well as head circumference of all fetuses were measured. The metopic suture and anterior fontanelle sizes were determined. The nearest

Infantile type hypophosphatasia, an autosomal recessive disease with severe clinical manifestations, is characterized biochemically by subnormal activities of circulating alkaline phosphatase. In this report, we presented a five-day-old male with this rare disorder. His parents were first cousins, and he was first seen for jaundice. He had soft calvaria, large fontanel, extremely wide cranial sutures, low-set ears, a depressed nasal bridge, funnel chest, and short and bowed distal limbs. Roentgenographic studies showed widened sutures and poor ossification of the skull, bowing of the femora an

We describe initial observations of an infant with dermatosparaxis (another form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, designated as type VIIC), an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by skin fragility and described in several species of domesticated animals. Electron microscopic examination of the skin shows collagen sheets rather than fibrils, and characteristic distortions resembling hieroglyphs. In addition to skin fragility, the disorder is characterized by redundant skin folds and edema, healing with minimal scar formation, large fontanels and wide sagittal and metopic sutures, blue sclerae,

We report a child with an unusual pattern of malformations: severe delay in bone maturation, wide fontanelles and facial dysmorphism (evoking cleidocranial dysplasia), relative macroencephaly with cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, hypertelorism, skeletal abnormalities (1st ribs aplasia, multifocal sternal ossification centers, thin bones), septal defect, muscular waste, hypotonia and developmental delay. Most of these features have been reported previously by Ritscher, Schinzel et al. in two sibs, who suffered more severe cerebellar malformations (Dandy-Walker cyst or vermis aplasia). We propose 3

The Hajdu-Cheney syndrome or acro-osteolysis syndrome is a rare disease. Only 18 well-documented cases are described in the literature. Presentation of cases in the oral surgical literature is rare. The syndrome is characterized by dissolution of terminal phalanges of the hands and feet, dolichocephaly, open cranial sutures, multiple wormian bones, absence of frontal sinuses, wide open sella turcica, progressive basilar invagination, early loss of teeth, short stature and characteristic facies. Inheritance is most likely autosomal dominant. 3 patients are presented, 2 of them are mother and so

We report an uncle and niece with duplication and deletion, respectively, of segment 7p15 leads to 7p21 originating from a balanced, intrachromosomal insertion in their mothers. The proposita had prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency, retarded psychomotor development, microcephaly, wide cranial sutures, ocular hypertelorism, small palpebral fissures, apparently low-set and malformed ears, cleft palate, congenital heart defect, hypoplasia of the distal phalanx of first fingers, rocker-bottom feet, persistent cloaca, and imperforate anus. She died at three months. Her maternal uncle has dupli

This report sets forth an example of a new mode of management of severe craniosynostosis in the neonate: subtotal calvariectomy. An infant with synostosis of sagittal, coronal, and lambdoidal sutures who had signs of increased intracranial pressure with impending neurologic complications was operated on at 13 days of age. Wide excision of the bony calvarium from the underlying dura was accomplished from the supraorbital ridge to near the foramen magnum; the entire area of the coronal sutures was included. Regeneration of the calvarium occurred over two to 12 weeks and was accompanied by the pr

Newborn infants with wide cranial sutures and large anterior fontanels, but having normal head circumferences, were prospectively studied and compared with a group of normal controls. The study group with wide sutures was composed of two different groups--one with good calcification of the calvaria, fairly large anterior fontanels, and no Wormian bones; and another with distinct parietal prominences, very large anterior and posterior fontanels with prolonged patency, poor initial calcification of the calvaria, and Wormian bones. Normal head growth and physical and mental development were obser
