Acardius anceps is an uncommon but serious consequence of multiple pregnancy, usually in monozygotic twins. There are great variations in gross appearance and pathologic features. Recently we have encountered 3 cases of acardius anceps in 3 sets of twin pregnancy. The subcutaneous edema was so extensive and severe that no facial structures could be recognized; however, the skull bones could be detected by prenatal ultrasound examination and confirmed by postnatal radiography. Treatment results of 47 pregnant women with Hodgkin's disease (HD) are analyzed using data reported in the literature since 1960. Twenty-three of the patients were treated with radiation during pregnancy and 17 of the 23 patients (74%) were reported to be long term disease-free survivors. All of these pregnancies resulted in normal deliveries and the babies were evaluated to have no abnormalities at birth. With the aim of evaluating the sensitivity of obstetrical ultrasonography for prenatal screening of major birth defects, a retrospective study was conducted on 164 pregnancies which ended in the birth of an affected baby. Fetal tumors represent a rare and heterogeneous group of abnormalities. A significant proportion of them can now be diagnosed by using modern high resolution ultrasonic equipment. Amnion rupture sequence is considered an uncommon, sporadic condition among liveborn infants. We have examined 1,010 previable fetuses (9-20 weeks developmental age) to determine the incidence and nature of amnion rupture sequence at this stage of development. We found 18 affected fetuses (15 spontaneous and 3 induced abortions) with the incidence of 1:56. Recent reports on the relationship between caffeine consumption by pregnant women and their infants' risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, preterm delivery and congenital malformations were reviewed. Twin pregnancies pose particular problems in both prenatal diagnosis and obstetric management. We present 19 twin pregnancies that underwent fetal blood sampling (FBS). The indications were mostly similar to those for singleton pregnancies, with both fetuses being sampled. A prenatal diagnosis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is associated with a poor prognosis, especially if diagnosed early in gestation and associated with polyhydramnios. Although uncommon, it is important to rule out associated anomalies, so that elective termination can be considered. If CDH is an isolated anomaly, the outcome is related to the degree of pulmonary hypoplasia caused by viscera displacing the lung in utero. A survey of the records of all hospitals with obstetric services in Nova Scotia revealed that during 1980-84 there were 122 pregnancies involving a neural tube defect. Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is acquired from undercooked meat or from food or fomites contaminated by cat feces.
