We analyzed the risk factors and outcomes of antenatally diagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) from a tertiary-care children's hospital following in-utero transfer. A total of 41 antenatally detected cases of CDH were included; 30 were live-born and 11 were stillborn. The primary outcome was postnatal survival. The secondary outcome was the probable factor affecting survival. No medical termination of the pregnancy was done. The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 23 weeks. The diagnostic accuracy of antenatal ultrasonography was 40/41 (97.5%). Lung-to-head ratio (LHR) was <1 in 20

BACKGROUND: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) has a favorable benefit-risk profile treating people with multiple sclerosis and should be used in pregnant women only if the potential benefits outweigh potential risks to the fetus.
OBJECTIVE: Assess pregnancy outcomes in a completed international registry (TecGistry) of women with MS exposed to DMF.
METHODS: TecGistry included pregnant women with MS exposed to DMF, with data collected at enrollment, 6-7 months gestation, 4 weeks after estimated due date, and at postpartum weeks 4, 12, and 52. Outcomes included live births, gestational size, pregnancy lo

OBJECTIVES: The congenital embryonic tumor known as sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) affects 1 in 35.000-40.000 newborns and is more prevalent in female fetuses and neonates. A total of 25-50% of SCTs are diagnosed by an ultrasound (US) examination during the second trimester of pregnancy. Planning the manner of delivery, determining the risk of negative outcomes, and choosing treatment options depend on the results of antenatal differential diagnosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a unique case of a 29-year-old second gravida, suspected of having a fetal sacrococcygeal dysplasia differentiable bet

Meckel-Gruber syndrome is a lethal disorder characterized by occipital encephalocele, polycystic kidneys, and polydactyly. In most cases, it is identified and terminated antenatally. In this report, the authors present a case of Meckel-Gruber syndrome together with Dandy-Walker malformation. A pregnant woman referred at the 28th week of gestation with an abnormal ultrasound scan showing posterior encephalocele and bilaterally enlarged kidneys. Further imaging also indicated communication between the 4th ventricle and posterior cerebellar cerebrospinal fluid space, after which the fetus was dia

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the perinatal outcomes of dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twin pregnancies reduced by the fetal reduction (FR) procedure and cases with continuing DCDA twin pregnancies without FR.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: FR performed in a university hospital in the last 10 years was evaluated. Pregnancies reduced to DCDA twin pregnancies by reduction from three or more pregnancies and pregnancies that started with DCDA twins and continued with DCDA twins were compared in terms of perinatal outcomes. In the subgroup analysis, those who were reduced from three-chorio

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, proinflammatory factors are considered to play an important role in the pathophysiology of threatened preterm labor or chorioamnionitis. The aim of this study was to establish the normal reference range for interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in the amniotic fluid and to identify factors which may alter this value.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective study in a tertiary-level center including asymptomatic pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis for genetic studies from October 2016 to September 2019. IL-6 measurements in amniotic fluid were performed using a fluorescence immunoa

Obesity has become a global health challenge also affecting reproductive health. In pregnant women, obesity increases the risk of complications such as preterm birth, macrosomia, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia. Moreover, obesity is associated with long-term adverse effects for the offspring, including increased risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and neurodevelopmental difficulties. The underlying mechanisms are far from understood, but placental function is essential for pregnancy outcome. Transporter proteins P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP)

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Monochorionic pregnancies are responsible for some severe complications, and selective reduction of a single fetus can improve pregnancy outcomes. This study evaluated the fetal outcomes and procedure-related prognostic factors after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in complicated monochorionic multiple pregnancies.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in an academic center from June 2020 to January 2022. The participants were 70 women with monochorionic multiple pregnancies who were candidates for selective fetal reduction by RFA.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing demand for prenatal diagnostic testing in twin pregnancies, however, anecdotally there is a higher incidence of procedure-related complications after amniocentesis than that in singleton pregnancies. There is a paucity of data regarding risk factors of amniocentesis in twin pregnancies.
METHODS: Women with twin pregnancies who underwent amniocentesis between January 2016 and December 2020 were enrolled in this retrospective study. Procedure-related complications including spontaneous miscarriage, intrauterine fetal death, spontaneous preterm delivery, preter

AIM: Chronic abruption-oligohydramnios sequence (CAOS), which is characterized by vaginal bleeding and oligohydramnios, adversely affects the lungs of fetuses due to bloody amniotic fluid and oligohydramnios. The criteria for termination of pregnancy remain controversial. This study aimed to examine respiratory function in infants within 3 years after birth and risk factors for respiratory prognosis, and to clarify the management of CAOS.
METHODS: This study is a case series of patients with CAOS managed at our institution between 2010 and 2020. The clinical data of the patients and their inf

OBJECTIVE: Universal screening for cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection in pregnancy is not recommended in most countries. One of the major deterrents is the lack of effective prenatal therapy. The role of valacyclovir therapy in reducing the risk of vertical transmission, symptomatic congenital CMV infection and adverse outcome is controversial. The main aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the safety and effectiveness of prenatal valacyclovir therapy in pregnancies with maternal CMV infection.

BACKGROUND: The study of morphology is experiencing a renaissance due to rapid improvements in technologies for 3D visualization of complex internal and external structures. But 3D visualization of the internal structure of mesoscale objects - those in the 10-1000 μm range - remains problematic. They are too small for microCT, many lack suitable specific fluorescent markers for confocal microscopy, or they require labor-intensive stacking and smoothing of individual TEM images. Here we illustrate the first comprehensive morphological description of a complete mesoscale biological system at nan

BACKGROUND: Triploidy is commonly associated with the development of early-onset preeclampsia. While previable preeclampsia is often a contraindication to prolonging pregnancy, there may be rare circumstances in which an alternative approach may be offered.
CASE: A nulliparous patient with a dichorionic twin gestation, recently diagnosed triploidy in one twin, and history of chronic hypertension presented at 18 weeks of gestation with signs and symptoms suggestive of preeclampsia. After symptomatic therapy and laboratory evaluations, selective fetal termination of the affected twin was electe

INTRODUCTION: Policy implementation can be affected by what individuals believe to be right and wrong. When implementing abortion policies, providers' moral beliefs can be relevant in the success of the implementation process. Considering that midwives and nurses are direct providers of abortion care, exploring their experiences related to abortion policy implementation could provide helpful information to prevent policy failure.
METHODS: Systematic integrative review. The studies were identified through an electronic search strategy and the screening of the reference lists of all selected ar

This case-control study was designed to examine the association between different types of miscarriage history and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and determine whether the number of miscarriage history affects the risk of ASD. All of 2274 children with ASD and 1086 healthy controls were recruited. Sociodemographic and prenatal, perinatal, and neonatal characteristics were compared between the two groups. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were applied to investigate association between miscarriage history and ASD. Stratified analyses based on sex and types of miscarriages were similar

OBJECTIVE: Little is known regarding the effects of a prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD) on the cost of antenatal and delivery care. We sought to compare the maternal costs of care in pregnancies where the fetus or child was diagnosed prenatally vs. postnatally.
METHODS: Costs of maternal care were determined for pregnancies in which the fetus or child was diagnosed with CHD between 1997 and 2012 in the state of Utah. Cases of CHD were identified via a statewide birth defect surveillance program which included data on the timing of diagnosis, maternal demographic and clinica

BACKGROUND: Singleton pregnancy is encouraged to reduce pregnancy complications. In addition to single embryo transfer (SET), selective and spontaneous fetal reduction (SEFR and SPFR) can also achieve singleton pregnancies. After SEFR or SPFR, an inanimate fetus remains in the uterus. It is unclear whether the inanimate fetus would adversely affect another fetus or the mother. Previous studies have focused on the differences between pre- and post-reduction. However, studies focusing on the influence of SEFR and SPFR on the remaining fetal development and maintenance of pregnancy are rare.

To assess the spectrum of different etiologies, the intrauterine course, outcome and possible prognostic markers in prenatally detected fetal growth restriction (FGR) combined with polyhydramnios. Retrospective study of 153 cases with FGR combined with Polyhydramnios diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound over a period of 17 years. Charts were reviewed for ultrasound findings, prenatal and postnatal outcome. All cases were categorized into etiological groups and examined for differences. Five etiological groups were identified: chromosomal anomalies (n = 64, 41.8%), complex malformation syndromes (n
