Anencephaly Defects Do Not Alter Macroscopic Development of the Ureterovesical Junction in Human Fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare morphometric parameters of the bladder, bladder trigone, and intramural ureter between human fetuses with and without anencephaly, adjusting for fetal age and weight. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven human fetuses were analyzed (23 controls and 14 with anencephaly), ranging from 11 to 35 weeks post-conception. Bladder dimensions, trigonal measurements, and right and left intramural ureter lengths were obtained by standardized microdissection and digital morphometry. Group comparisons were performed using Student's t-test. Multivariable linear regression models adjuste

Ependymoma in a 14-week fetus with occipital encephalocele: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Ependymomas are rare glial tumors arising from ependymal cells. Most fetal ependymomas reported in the literature are identified in the third trimester. This report describes prenatal detection of an occipital encephalocele at 14 weeks' gestation with subsequent post-termination histopathological identification of ependymoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her 20s (gravida 2, para 0) underwent routine ultrasonography at 14 weeks' gestation at a tertiary care hospital in India. Imaging showed a large occipital encephalocele with herniated disorganized brain parenchyma and associated

MRI follow-up of embolized intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas using 3D time-of-flight and contrast-enhanced 3D T1-weighted GRE imaging.

BACKGROUND: Although digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the reference standard for post-treatment follow-up of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs), it is an invasive procedure associated with procedural risks and may not be justified for the follow-up of all DAVFs. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 3D time-of-flight (3D TOF) and contrast-enhanced 3D T1-weighted gradient-echo (3D T1 Gd) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences for monitoring embolized intracranial DAVFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center stu

Non-muscle actinopathy-associated loss-of-function actin variants modulate cytoskeletal reorganization.

Variants in ACTB gene encoding for cytoplasmic β-actin result in a group of rare disorders called non-muscle actinopathies (NMA). A subgroup of NMA patients with ACTB pLoF (predicted loss-of-function) disorder have various congenital malformations, such as microcephaly and intellectual disability. We investigated the cellular effects of an ACTB pLoF missense variant, G302A, and a four-amino-acid deletion, S338-I341 in cytoskeletal β-actin, in patient-derived fibroblast cells. We found that neither of the mutations affected the organization of actin or the width of the actin-filament bundles, w

Lumbar fenestration to avoid shunting after posterior fossa tumor resection and failed ventriculostomy clamp trial.

OBJECTIVE: Posterior fossa tumors in children frequently present with hydrocephalus. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion with an external ventriculostomy drain (EVD) is often used preoperatively or inserted at the time of surgery and continued into the postoperative setting. Despite tumor resections to restore fourth ventricular CSF passage, some patients fail EVD clamping and still require shunting for persistent hydrocephalus despite postoperative imaging showing patent CSF pathways. Increasing CSF gradient and transient CSF absorption during the postoperative period with a percutaneous, mod

Spatially resolved periventricular ADC profiling in normal pressure hydrocephalus: an exploratory pilot study.

PURPOSE: To explore whether boundary-anchored apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) profiling can characterize periventricular diffusion patterns in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventeen patients with shunted NPH with baseline and postoperative follow-up ADC maps acquired at 1.5 T or 3 T and 17 age-, sex-, and scanner-matched controls were analyzed retrospectively. A short anchor was placed along the frontal horn ventricular boundary. ADC values were sampled along approximately orthogonal lines and summarized as amplitude- and shape-related profile metrics. Visualizing ventriculoperitoneal shunt valve settings with computed tomography, using extended CT scale reconstructions.

INTRODUCTION: Ventriculoperitoneal shunts are commonly evaluated using radiographs to confirm valve settings and catheter integrity. Although modern CT provides detailed soft tissue assessment, valve setting readouts have been unreliable due to insufficient spatial resolution and attenuation range. This study investigated whether image reconstructions with extended CT scale (ECTS) can enable reliable identification of valve settings for three common programmable shunt valve types on routine clinical CT examinations. METHODS: Fifteen routine head CT examinations from 14 patients with programma

Diagnostic accuracy of CSF tap-test parameters in predicting shunt responsiveness in normal pressure hydrocephalus: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The cerebrospinal fluid tap test (CSF-TT) is widely used as an ancillary test to select patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) for ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt surgery; however, its diagnostic utility remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the diagnostic utility of CSF-TT in predicting outcomes following VP shunts. METHODS: Patients with probable iNPH underwent assessments of gait, urinary, and cognitive function using the Dutch gait scale, timed up and go (TUG) gait score, iNPH grading scale, and modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at baseline and 24 h after

Hydrocephalus: Treatment, Current Research, and Challenges.

Hydrocephalus is a complex neurological condition characterized by derangements in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics including disrupted CSF flow/absorption and/or excess CSF production that leads to ventricular enlargement and presents both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Its origins span from congenital anomalies to acquired cases following hemorrhage, infection, or tumors. Hydrocephalus is suspected in the setting of appropriate clinical signs/symptoms, and the diagnosis is confirmed with brain imaging and, in rare cases, invasive intracranial pressure monitoring. Surgical intervent

Early-Life Presentation and Phenotypic Variability of the IGF1R c.3595G>A (p.Gly1199Arg) Variant: A Case Report.

Most infants born small for gestational age (SGA) achieve spontaneous catch-up growth within the first two years of life; however, a subset remains growth-restricted and warrants further evaluation. Persistent short stature accompanied by microcephaly should prompt consideration of an underlying monogenic disorder. We report a term male infant born with severe SGA (birth weight -3.8 SDS; birth length -2.2 SDS) and microcephaly. At 16 months of age, his height was -2.7 SDS and head circumference -3.1 SDS. Initial insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) concentration was mildly decreased (-1.0 SDS)

Subdural effusion with hydrocephalus in dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy: A case report.

A 56-year-old woman with dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) was admitted with progressive disturbance of consciousness. Computed tomography of the head revealed bilateral subdural effusions compressing the cerebral hemispheres. The effusions enlarged despite conservative management, so burr-hole drainage was performed. Unexpectedly, marked hydrocephalus developed postoperatively, resulting in a poor neurological outcome. Subdural effusion with hydrocephalus (SDEH) is a condition that usually occurs secondary to severe head injury or neurosurgical procedures, but reports of its occurr
