Anencephaly Defects Do Not Alter Macroscopic Development of the Ureterovesical Junction in Human Fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare morphometric parameters of the bladder, bladder trigone, and intramural ureter between human fetuses with and without anencephaly, adjusting for fetal age and weight. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven human fetuses were analyzed (23 controls and 14 with anencephaly), ranging from 11 to 35 weeks post-conception. Bladder dimensions, trigonal measurements, and right and left intramural ureter lengths were obtained by standardized microdissection and digital morphometry. Group comparisons were performed using Student's t-test. Multivariable linear regression models adjuste

Neural Tube Defects in Resource-Limited Settings: A Lebanese Case Series Highlighting Prevention Gaps and Challenges in Prenatal Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are congenital developmental anomalies resulting from incomplete neural tube closure during early embryonic development. They present a wide range of clinical manifestations along the craniospinal axis. OBJECTIVE: With only 6.2% of Lebanese women of childbearing age taking folic acid tablets during the adequate period, it is primordial to shed light on cases of NTDs in Lebanon. This case series presents four cases of NTDs that deviate from the conventional "zipper closure" model of neural tube development, aligning more with the modern multisite closure

Neural tube defect risk in relation to opioid analgesic exposure during early pregnancy.

We evaluated neural tube defect (NTD) risk associated with prescription opioid analgesic use during early pregnancy. We conducted a cohort study of liveborn singletons during 2001-2014 among 9 U.S. health plans. Risks of medical chart-confirmed primary NTD (anencephaly and select spina bifida) and any NTD (primary and other NTD) were compared among singletons with maternal new use of opioids during 18-56 days after last menstrual period to those with no maternal use during this period or pre-pregnancy. In a sensitivity analysis, singletons exposed during the second or third trimesters only ("n

Coronal Clival Cleft: Estimated Prevalence and Clinical Associations in a Pediatric Cohort.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Coronal clival cleft is a congenital corticated defect traversing the basioccipital portion of the clivus, beneath the spheno-occipital synchondrosis. It has been reported in cases of CHARGE syndrome, Cornelia de Lange syndrome, anencephaly, hemifacial microsomia, Chiari deformities, and in asymptomatic patients, but it may be underdiagnosed and underestimated on imaging. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of coronal clival cleft and expand its genetic and clinical associations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, the imaging report database fro

Neural Tube Defects (NTDs) and Modifiable Maternal Behavioral Risks in a Low-Resource Setting: Evidence From a Multicenter, Hospital-Based, Case-Control Study in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are among the most common and severe congenital anomalies, with an especially high prevalence in Ethiopia. This study aimed to identify potential maternal risk and protective factors associated with NTDs in a low-resource African setting. METHODS: A multicenter, hospital-based, matched case-control study was conducted in Hawassa and Addis Ababa, in which cases were mothers of live born, stillborn, or electively terminated pregnancies after 12 weeks of gestation with an established NTD in the fetus or infant. Controls were pregnant and postpartum women wh

A Global Update on the Status of Prevention of Folic Acid-Preventable Spina Bifida and Anencephaly in Year 2024.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida and anencephaly are major birth defects, and the majority of them can be prevented through maternal intake of folic acid (vitamin B9) during early pregnancy. We estimated the proportion of folic acid-preventable spina bifida and anencephaly (FAP SBA) prevented globally through mandatory folic acid fortification policy in the year 2024 for cereal grains (i.e., wheat flour, maize flour, and rice). METHODS: We used country-specific fortification data from the Food Fortification Initiative for year 2024. Seventy countries had mandatory cereal grain fortification adding fo

Indications for cesarean delivery among patients with life-limiting fetal diagnoses.

INTRODUCTION: Mode of delivery is uniquely complex when a neonate is not expected to survive after birth. Cesarean delivery (CD) generally confers increased maternal morbidity but may be pursued to mitigate intrapartum fetal risk. Prior studies have reported elevated CD rates among patients with a life-limiting fetal diagnosis (LLFD) but have not characterized the indications that drive this increase. We sought to characterize the proportion and indications for CD among patients with selected LLFDs. METHODS: This retrospective cohort includes patients with an antenatal LLFD who delivered at a

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during maternal pregnancy: Effects of DNA damage on neural tube defects in offspring.

Prenatal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure may contribute to neural tube defects (NTD), but combined effects and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We conducted a matched case-control study (128 pairs) in six high-risk counties in Shanxi Province, China (2004-2016). At delivery or pregnancy termination, placenta samples were collected. Sixteen placental PAHs and 11 hydroxylated metabolites were quantified by GC-MS/MS as biomarkers of fetal intrauterine exposure, alongside 16 DNA adducts measured by UPLC-MS/MS. Complementary ICR mouse experiments with benzo[a]pyrene (BaP, 100 mg

Prenatal Diagnosis of Craniorachischisis Totalis Following an Initially Normal First-Trimester Ultrasound in a Woman With Two Previous Caesarean Births: A Case Report.

Craniorachischisis totalis is the most severe form of open neural tube defect and combines acrania/anencephaly with extensive open spinal dysraphism. It is rare, lethal, and usually identifiable prenatally, but diagnostic labeling may evolve across pregnancy as imaging findings become clearer. We report the case of a 33-year-old multiparous woman, gravida 4 para 2+1, with two previous caesarean births, whose booking ultrasound at 8 weeks and 4 days of amenorrhea showed a single live intrauterine embryo with no documented structural abnormality. She later underwent targeted fetal anomaly scanni

The law on voluntary termination of pregnancy in Argentina: impact on the epidemiological situation of congenital anomalies and prenatal diagnostic health services.

Congenital anomalies (CA) can be detected prenatally through imaging and specialized procedures. On December 30, 2020, Argentina passed the Termination of pregnancy (TOP) law. This study assesses the impact of this legislation on the epidemiological profile of CA, in relation to access to prenatal diagnosis and the practice of legal termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomalies. A before-and-after study design was used, comparing two three-year periods: 2015–2017 and 2021–2023, using data from the National Network of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC). A survey was also conducted amon

Embryotoxic Effects of Monosodium Methyl Arsenate (MSMA) on Gallus gallus: Morphological and Morphometric Evidence of Developmental Disruptions.

Anthropogenic activities and the large volume of compounds released into the environment are sources of contamination for plants, animals, and humans. The herbicide monosodium methyl arsenate (MSMA) ranks among the best-selling agricultural pesticides in Brazil. It is classified as highly toxic, containing arsenic, which crosses the placenta, reaching the developing embryo. To assess the toxic effects of these chemicals, model organisms such as chicken embryos are used, as they share phylotypic features with human embryos in the early stages of development, allowing extrapolation between speci
