The law on voluntary termination of pregnancy in Argentina: impact on the epidemiological situation of congenital anomalies and prenatal diagnostic health services.

Congenital anomalies (CA) can be detected prenatally through imaging and specialized procedures. On December 30, 2020, Argentina passed the Termination of pregnancy (TOP) law. This study assesses the impact of this legislation on the epidemiological profile of CA, in relation to access to prenatal diagnosis and the practice of legal termination of pregnancy due to fetal anomalies. A before-and-after study design was used, comparing two three-year periods: 2015–2017 and 2021–2023, using data from the National Network of Congenital Anomalies of Argentina (RENAC). A survey was also conducted amon

Embryotoxic Effects of Monosodium Methyl Arsenate (MSMA) on Gallus gallus: Morphological and Morphometric Evidence of Developmental Disruptions.

Anthropogenic activities and the large volume of compounds released into the environment are sources of contamination for plants, animals, and humans. The herbicide monosodium methyl arsenate (MSMA) ranks among the best-selling agricultural pesticides in Brazil. It is classified as highly toxic, containing arsenic, which crosses the placenta, reaching the developing embryo. To assess the toxic effects of these chemicals, model organisms such as chicken embryos are used, as they share phylotypic features with human embryos in the early stages of development, allowing extrapolation between speci

IgG4-related disease in correlation with left main coronary artery aneurysm as a rare cause of heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Eagle syndrome is caused by an elongated styloid process affecting carotid arteries and cranial nerves. Pain, dysphagia, tinnitus, paresthesia (classic subtype), and neurovascular events (vascular subtype) may be triggered by head movements or arise spontaneously. However, Eagle syndrome remains underappreciated in the neurological community. We aimed to determine the most common neurological and non-neurological clinical presentations in patients with Eagle syndrome and to assess the clinical outcome post-surgical resection in comparison to non-surgical therapies. METHODOLOGY: We

Abnormal Enteric Nervous System Organization and Gastrointestinal Motility in Mice With Valproic Acid-Induced Neural Tube Defects.

BACKGROUND: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are a common congenital birth anomaly that can occur at either cranial levels, resulting in anencephaly, or spinal levels, resulting in spina bifida. Neurogenic bowel is a major cause of morbidity in patients affected by spina bifida, but it is unknown whether the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is affected in other types of NTDs. An absolute requirement for GI motility is the enteric nervous system (ENS) located within the walls of the GI tract. Enteric neurons coalesce into circumferential stripes throughout embryonic, fetal, and early postnatal development

Embryological and Pathophysiological Perspectives on a Rare Association of Sirenomelia with Anencephaly and Spina Bifida.

Sirenomelia is a severe developmental anomaly that manifests as the existence of a single lower limb due to fusion or the absence of one or more lower limb bones. We report a case of sirenomelia that occurred in conjunction with anencephaly and spina bifida. Numerous systems, including the genitourinary and gastrointestinal systems, have been implicated in the condition. In the present case, a single kidney, a single ureter, and an inflated and blind sigmoid colon were found following fetal dissection. In addition, the umbilical cord was histologically examined and revealed the presence of a s

Phloroglucinol Exposure During Early Pregnancy and Risk of Major Congenital Malformations: A Nationwide Cohort Study in France.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Phloroglucinol is a spasmolytic drug widely prescribed in France for gastrointestinal or pelvic pain, and frequently used during pregnancy despite limited evidence regarding its safety. We aimed to evaluate the association between first-trimester phloroglucinol exposure and the risk of major congenital malformations (MCMs) in a nationwide cohort. METHODS: Using data from the French EPI-MERES cohort based on the national health data system (SNDS), we identified all pregnancies ending after 22 weeks between 2010 and 2022, excluding women with phloroglucinol use in the year

Acalvaria in historical records.

BACKGROUND: Acalvaria describes a rare defect of the cranial vault marked by the absence of cranial bones or the dura mater, whereas the brain, cranial base and facial bones remain intact. Although it is considered as a perinatal lethal malformation, some cases of surviving newborns have also been documented. In historical sources and medical literature, it is often difficult to distinguish it from Acrania, or it is incorrectly referred to as Anencephaly or other related terms. Due to its rarity in modern case reports, this article investigates whether it can be found in historical records. M

Approaches to a crisis in early pregnancy: an explorative qualitative study of medical students and doctors in training in Ireland, using a story completion model.

A crisis in early pregnancy can be due to an unplanned pregnancy or a suspected abnormality. Pregnant people have the right to unbiased and comprehensive advice of all options from healthcare providers. Using story completion models (SCM), the aim of this qualitative study was to explore the attitudes of medical students and doctors in training towards crisis pregnancy, specifically two scenarios: early unplanned pregnancy and fatal fetal abnormality (anencephaly). Participants were invited from medical students attending University College Dublin (UCD) and trainees in Obstetrics and Gynaecolo

Association between preconception and early pregnancy exposure to fine particulate matter and nervous system anomalies: a nested case-control study.

Although several environmental factors may increase the risk of nervous system anomalies, the association between exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and nervous system anomalies is not completely understood. This study aimed to examine the association between expoure to PM2.5 and nervous system anomalies, including specific phenotypes during preconception and early pregnancy and determine the crucial time windows. We conducted a nested case-control study from the Taiwan Maternal and Child Health Database between 2004 and 2017. We applied satellite-b

Advanced profiling and structural analysis of anencephaly gangliosides by ion mobility tandem mass spectrometry.

Anencephaly, the most severe type of neural tube defects (NTDs) in humans, occurs between the third and fourth gestational weeks (GW), involves the cranial part of the NT and results in the absence of the forebrain and skull. Exposed to amniotic fluid toxicity, neural tissue is degraded and prevented from development. Currently, little is known about the molecular bases of the disease and the possible involvement of glycans. In this context, considering the role played by gangliosides (GGs) in fetal brain development and the previous achievements of ion mobility separation (IMS) mass spectrome

Pt-LIS1 participates nuclear deformation and acrosome formation via regulating Dynein-1 during spermatogenesis in Portunus trituberculatus.

Spermatogenesis involves complex dynamic mechanisms. Dynein-1 is a key carrier in cellular cargo transport, participating in nuclear deformation and acrosome formation during spermatogenesis. However, the regulatory mechanisms of Dynein-1 during cargo transport remain unknown. In this study, we explored the role of Lissencephaly 1 (LIS1) in spermatogenesis and its impact on Dynein-1 cargo transport in Portunus trituberculatus. LIS1 was known as a Dynein-1 regulator, which is a causative gene of anencephaly syndrome. Pt-Lis1 was cloned from the crab testis, and its highly expression was observe

Why should the baby live or not live? Decisions of Turkish pregnant women regarding the fate of pregnancy when there are fetal anomalies.

This study investigated the decisions of pregnant women regarding the fate of pregnancy in cases of fetal anomalies. Using a cross sectional approach, data were gathered through a structured survey with hypothetical fetal anomalies. The data were analysed using SPSS 23.0. The preference for continuation of pregnancy was 58.7% in anencephaly and 92.4% in Down syndrome. The decision to continue the pregnancy was mainly justified by scruple, sin, and the baby's right to life. The reasons for terminating the pregnancy were the baby's short life expectancy, being exposed to discrimination, and not

Impact of abortion bans on pregnancies with severe life-limiting foetal anomalies in the United States: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Since the US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health to overturn the constitutional right to abortion in June 2022, 24 states have enacted laws prohibiting termination of pregnancy before most foetal anomalies are diagnosed. Few practical exceptions are made for trisomy 13, trisomy 18, or anencephaly, which are severe life-limiting conditions with significant morbidity for survivors. In this cost-effectiveness model, we estimated the difference in cost and maternal health outcomes associated with a termination ban for severe life-limiting foetal anomalies. METHODS
