Novel multidrug therapy for disseminated rhinosporidiosis, refractory to dapsone – case report.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disorder, caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi endemic in India and Sri Lanka. The most common sites are the nasal mucosa and the nasopharynx and cutaneous lesions usually occur as a part of disseminated rhinosporidiosis. Dapsone has been frequently used in treating disseminated disease in immunocompetent individuals. Here we report a case of disseminated rhinosporidiosis in an immunocompromised individual on antiretroviral drugs, non-responsive to Dapsone and therefore treated with a multidrug therapy of Cycloserine, Dapsone and Ketoconazole with good r

Conjunctival rhinosporidiosis.

A 12-year-old boy presenting with redness and foreign body sensation in his right eye was found to have a granular, pedunculated mass in the upper palpebral conjunctiva near the lid margin. After the mass was excised, the conjunctiva healed completely, with mild overlying scarring. At 6 weeks' follow-up, there was no evidence of recurrence. Histopathological examination of the mass revealed multiple sporangia characteristic of conjunctival rhinosporidiosis.

Laryngotracheal rhinosporidiosis.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. It usually affects mucous membranes of the nose, nasopharynx, and ocular conjunctiva. Cutaneous, laryngeal, tracheal, genital, and bony dissemination is rare. Laryngotracheal involvement poses many diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. A 45-year-old South Indian man presented with complaints of a mass in both nostrils for 2 years, associated with progressive hoarseness of voice and difficulty in breathing for 6 months. Rhinosporidial lesions were seen bilaterally in the nasal cavity. Telescopic and fiberopti

Rhinosporidiosis of the left wrist joint: a case report.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. It usually occurs in the mucous membranes of nose, nasopharynx, and eyes, and less commonly in extra nasal sites such as skin, bones, genitalia, and even the internal organs. Rhinosporidiosis occurs in the wrist joint with isolated bony involvement is rare. We report one such case in a 50-year-old man who presented with a non-tender, fixed swelling over his anterolateral aspect of left forearm. Radiography and computed tomography showed a lytic destructive lesion involving the distal radius, ulna, carpals, an

Disseminated rhinosporidiosis.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinosporidiosis primarily affects the mucous membranes of the nose and nasopharynx. The disseminated form of this chronic fungal disease is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of disseminated rhinosporidiosis in an immunocompetent patient with involvement of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle, bone, penis and urethra, and with a long-standing primary lesion in the nose. DISCUSSION: A late or atypical presentation of rhinosporidiosis may cause diagnostic dilemma. Fine needle aspiration cytology of the tumoural lesions may establish the diagnosis. Histopat

Comments on 'novel multidrug therapy for disseminated rhinosporidiosis, refractory to dapsone - case report'.

Disseminated rhinosporidiosis can be successfully treated with multidrug therapy. Orally administered drugs can take longer to reach the affected areas in the presence of haemorrhage, oedema and inflammation. Wherever possible, surgical excision followed by drug therapy would be more effective.

Imaging features of rhinosporidiosis on contrast CT.

CONTEXT: Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease endemic in certain regions of India. Computed tomography (CT) imaging appearances of rhinosporidiosis have not been previously described in the literature. AIMS: To study imaging features in rhinosporidiosis with contrast-enhanced CT and elucidate its role in the evaluation of this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixteen patients with pathologically proven rhinosporidiosis were included in the study. Contrast-enhanced CT images were analyzed retrospectively and imaging findings were correlated with surgical and histopathologic find

Benign sinonasal masses: a clinicopathological and radiological profile.

BACKGROUND: Benign nasal and paranasal sinus masses are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Though benign, certain nasal polyps, fungal sinusitis, hemangiomas and fibro-osseous tumors can present with locally destructive features and deformities, mimicking malignancies at once. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to recognize the great variety of benign nasal lesions and their frequency in our region. METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis of cases presenting as mass in nose and paranasal sinus that underwent surgery over three years duration at our institute was done. A provisiona

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has placed an enormous strain on the Swiss healthcare system. This study aims to assess the associations of the pandemic on Switzerland's hospital resource use and in-hospital mortality among both COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 patients. METHODS: In this national cohort study, we analysed administrative claims data for medical inpatients from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2021, using mixed-effects segmented regression models. Hospitalisations were divided into a control and an exposure group before (January 2018 to December 2019) and during (January 2020 to Dece

Rhinosporidiosis of the parotid duct presenting as a parotid duct cyst - a report of three cases.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Rhinosporidiosis has been reported from many countries but is endemic in certain parts of India and Sri Lanka. The common sites of involvement are the nose and nasopharynx followed by ocular tissue. Rhinosporidiosis is also known to involve many rare sites and may become disseminated to occur in a generalized form. Rhinosporidiosis of the parotid duct is rare and only five reported cases could be found in the literature. We report three cases of rhinosporidiosis of parotid duct presenting clinically as a pa

The taxonomy and phylogenetics of the human and animal pathogen Rhinosporidium seeberi: a critical review.

Rhinosporidum seeberi is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, a disease of mucous membranes and infrequent of the skin and other tissues of humans and animals. Because it resists culture, for more than 100 years true taxonomic identity of R. seeberi has been controversial. Three hypotheses in a long list of related views have been recently introduced: 1) a prokaryote cyanobacterium in the genus Microcystis is the etiologic agent of rhinosporidiosis, 2) R. seeberi is a eukaryote pathogen in the Mesomycetozoa and 3) R. seeberi is a fungus. The reviewed literature on the electron microscopic,

Equine laryngeal rhinosporidiosis in western Canada.

A 12-year-old female Argentinean Warmblood mare was evaluated because of respiratory noise. The horse resided in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but had been imported from Argentina 28 months prior to presentation. Endoscopy of the upper respiratory tract revealed a single polypoid mass on the left arytenoid. The mass was surgically excised and was diagnosed histologically as rhinosporidiosis. Polymerase chain reaction and DNA sequencing were used to confirm the etiological agent. Four weeks postoperatively, endoscopy was repeated, revealing recurrence of the original lesion with multiple additional

Bronchial rhinosporidiosis: An unusual presentation.

Rhinosporidiosis is a granulomatous disease that usually affects the nasal mucosa and nasopharynx. The disease is widely prevalent in the tropics, especially in southern India and Sri Lanka. In central India, rhinosporidiosis is endemic in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Involvement of the tracheobronchial tree is extremely rare. Only two cases of bronchial rhinosporidiosis had been reported in world literature. We report a third case of bronchial rhinosporidiosis which occurred in a patient with coexisting nasal and nasopharyngeal rhinosporidiosis. Bronchoscopic guidance excision of mass and electric c

Classification of subcutaneous and systemic mycoses.

The classification of human fungal infections in medical reports is sometimes confusing. This occurs because some agents act as opportunistic organisms in immunosuppressed patients, whereas others affect the subcutaneous tissue and also cause disseminated or systemic disease. Finally, some clinically similar infections caused by aerobic actinomycetic bacteria and others caused by parasites (rhinosporidiosis) have been traditionally included in the descriptions of mycotic diseases. This contribution provides the clinician with a classification of subcutaneous, systemic, and opportunistic fungal
