Clinico-Pathological Spectrum of Ophthalmic Lesions: An Experience in Tertiary Care Hospital of Central India.

INTRODUCTION: Ophthalmic lesions show varied distribution on the basis of geographical location. Eye being a unique sensory organ needs to be studied both clinically and pathologically. AIM: This study was aimed to evaluate the histomorphological and clinico-pathlological spectrum of ophthalmic lesions at a tertiary care hospital of Central India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all the ophthalmic biopsies performed in the Department of Pathology of our institute between January 2008 and November 2014. Total 488 biopsies of the orbito-ocular region were obtained from patients attending th

Disseminated Rhinosporidiosis with Conjunctival Involvement in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Rhinosporidiosis is a granulomatous infection of mucocutaneous tissue caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi that most commonly occurs in the nasal cavity. Ocular rhinosporidiosis affects primarily the conjunctiva. Diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis is based on strong clinical suspicion and is confirmed by histopathological examination. We report a rare case of conjunctival rhinosporidiosis in an immunocompromised patient (human immunodeficiency virus) with disseminated cutaneous rhinosporidiosis. A 44-year-old male presented with a swelling in the right upper eyelid for 6 months. Excision biopsy of the

An unusual cause of recurrent bloody tear.

We describe a female patient who presented with watering followed by swelling in the left infraorbital area of 5 years duration. She had previously been prescribed topical antibiotics on several occasions with no improvement. On pressure over the swelling, there was blood-tinged discharge from the left eye and nostril. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enhancing, well-defined mass lesion in the inferomedial aspect of the left orbit, likely of nasolacrimal origin. Computed tomography dacryocystogram with three-dimensional reconstruction showed a well-circumscribed mass with an irregular su

Revisiting the Utility of Histopathological Examination of Biopsy: A Necessity in Microbiology.

INTRODUCTION: Culture is the gold standard, while potassium hydroxide mount is simplest technique used for diagnosis of fungal pathogens. Histopathological examination is the only definitive means to identify certain uncultivable fungi. AIM: To analyse role of histopathological examination and potassium hydroxide (KOH) mount for diagnosing fungal infections by correlating them with culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this nine year retrospective study, all biopsy specimens submitted for microbiological examination were included. Histopathological examination of biopsies of cases with positive

Rare case of disseminated rhinosporidiosis with chronic osteomyelitis of the calcaneum treated by a simple technique of negative pressure wound therapy.

Occurrence of nasal, cutaneous and disseminated rhinosporidiosis in the same patient is uncommon and involvement of calcaneum is rare. Rhinosporidial osteomyelitis is treated surgically, but multiple recurrences and local spread are common. Many a times, surgical ablation or amputation of the involved area of the limb is carried out to prevent recurrences. We present a case of rhinosporidial osteomyelitis of the calcaneum with a chronic discharging sinus and large lytic lesion in the calcaneum treated by an alternative surgical option in the form of debridement and negative pressure wound ther

Rhinosporidiosis of lacrimal sac: An interesting case of orbital swelling.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic localized granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an aquatic protistan parasite belonging to a clade, Mesomycetozoea. Infestation of Rhinosporidiosis to the eye and adnexa is termed oculosporidiosis, in such cases, conjunctival mucosa is mostly involved; however in our case, it involved only the lacrimal sac and deeper periorbital tissue and presented as a case of orbital swelling. Surgical excision of the lesion was done, postoperatively dapsone therapy was given for 6 months, and the patient responded very well with no recurrence till date.

Varied Presentations of Cutaneous Rhinosporidiosis: A Report of Three Cases.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disorder of infective etiology and it frequently affects the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Involvement of skin in rhinosporidiosis is unusual and it may manifest itself in a diverse manner mimicking several common dermatological conditions. Three cases of cutaneous rhinosporidiosis with different presentations are reported here to highlight the manifold nature of the condition. Cutaneous rhinosporidiosis can mimic several common cutaneous disorders.

Elusive treatment for human rhinosporidiosis.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to clarify the contentious taxonomic classification of Rhinosporidium seeberi, the cause of human rhinosporidiosis, which may have treatment implications. METHODS: PCR was used to amplify the internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-2 region from the genomic DNA of the aetiological agent obtained from a sample of human rhinosporidiosis lesions. The amplicon was sequenced and the organism identified using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tools (BLAST). RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the aetiological agent clustered along with the R. seeberi isolate

Rhinosporidiosis of Parotid Duct Presenting as Consecutive Bilateral Facial Swelling: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Sporadic cases of rhinosporidiosis has been reported from many countries but is endemic in Southern India (Madurai, Ramnad, Rajapalayam and Sivaganga), Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. This disease commonly affects the mucous membrane of the nose or naso-pharynx and presents as a leafy, polypoidal mass. The reported extranasal sites include the oro-pharynx, eye, ear, larynx, trachea, bronchi, skin and genital mucosa. It may also become disseminated to present as a generalized form. In our case a 40-year-old

A Retrospective Epidemiological Study of Rhinosporidiosis in a Rural Tertiary Care Centre in Pondicherry.

INTRODUCTION: Rhinosporidiosis is an age old endemic scourge which has affected various parts of the world, most notably India and Sri Lanka. Although a large body of literature exists regarding this problem, postoperative recurrence rates continue to vary, and the effect of public health education in the eradication of this disease has not been taken into account. AIM: The aim of this study was to find out the site, presentation and postoperative recurrence rate in patients with rhinosporidiosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study involving operated cases of rhinosporidio

Educational report: A case of lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis.

This article reports a presentation of lacrimal sac rhinosporidiosis and informs the reader of this uncommon but important diagnosis. A 36-year-old man from Pakistan presented with a 3-month history of swelling at the nasal aspect of the left lower lid. This was associated with occasional crepitus and slight localised discomfort, but no epiphora. There was a palpable fullness near the left medial canthus associated with telecanthus but a normal sac washout and normal eye examination otherwise. Previous medical history included an ipsilateral nasal polypectomy and inferior meatal antrostomy aro
