Detection of tropical fungi in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue: still an indication for microscopy in times of sequence-based diagnosis?

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was the evaluation of panfungal PCR protocols with subsequent sequence analysis for the diagnostic identification of invasive mycoses in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples with rare tropical mycoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five different previously described panfungal PCR/sequencing protocols targeting 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA gene fragments as well as internal transcribed spacer 1 and 2 fragments were evaluated with a collection of 17 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples of patients with rare and/or tropical invasive mycoses, comp

The involvement of upper airway in Wegener's granulomatosis - about four cases.

The authors present four cases of Wegener's granulomatosis patients with multiorganic manifestation forms, but with a prevalent involvement in upper-airway. Granulomatosis diseases of the nose include bacterial infections (rhinoscleroma, tuberculosis, syphilis, lupus, and leprosy), fungal infections (rhinosporidiosis, aspergillosis, mucormycosis, candidosis, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis) and diseases with unspecified etiology (Wegener's granulomatosis, mediofacial malignant granuloma, and sarcoidosis). We consider an interesting experience regarding Wegener's granulomatosis due to its rar

UNLABELLED: Paradoxical deterioration in patients with tuberculous meningitis is a significant diagnostic and treatment challenge. We present the case of a 55-year-old previously healthy male, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative, presenting with headache, fever, agitation and slurred speech, who was ultimately diagnosed with tuberculous meningoencephalitis confirmed by cerebrospinal fluid polymerase chain reaction positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. After initiation of a standard antitubercular therapy combined with glucocorticoids, the patient experienced an initial neuro

Rhinosporidiosis of the parotid duct.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Rhinosporidiosis is a benign chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidiosis seeberi (R. seeberi). Rhinosporidiosis is endemic in South Asia, notably in Southern India and Sri Lanka. The common sites of involvement are the nose and nasopharynx followed by ocular tissue. Rhinosporidiosis is also known to involve many rare sites and may become disseminated to ocular in generalized form. Rhinosporidiosis of parotid duct is extremely rare. The case presented here is of 18-year-old male from the nonendemic zone of Nepal with a proliferative mass in the parotid duct. Although rhinosporidi

Ocular rhinosporidiosis mimicking conjunctival squamous papilloma in Kenya - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ocular rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by a newly classified organism that is neither a fungus nor bacterium. It often presents as a benign conjunctival tumour but may mimic other ocular conditions. It is most often described in India. In Africa cases have been reported from South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Uganda, Congo and Ivory Coast. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54 year old man was seen in Kenya with a lesion that resembled a conjunctival papilloma. We report resemblance to conjunctival papilloma and the result of vital staining with 0.05% Toluidine

Rhinosporidiosis: an unusual presentation.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease that primarily affects the mucous membranes of the nose and nasopharynx. It is caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Clinically it presents as a reddish, bleeding, polypoid mass with a characteristic strawberry-like appearance on its surface, which is caused by the presence of mature sporangia. In the case described here, a 35-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of a slowly growing polypoid mass in his left nasal cavity. The surface of the mass was smooth, pale, and covered with nasal mucosa. It was attached to the nasal septum. Fine-ne

Vaginal rhinosporidiosis: a case report.

The female genital tract is an extremely rare site for Rhinosporidiosis. Here we described a 13 year old girl who presented with a slow growing polypoid fleshy mass in the posterior vaginal wall near the orifice for 6 months with scanty bleeding from the mass. The girl was admitted to hospital with profuse watery vaginal discharge. Excision of the mass was followed by histopathological examination which confirmed the diagnosis Rhinosporidiosis.

Cytodiagnosis of Extra-nasal Rhinosporidiosis: A Study of 16 Cases from Endemic Area.

CONTEXT: Extra-nasal rhinosporidiosis is not uncommon in endemic region like India. Clinical presentations of extra-nasal rhinosporidiosis lesion often lead to diagnostic dilemma. Cytology can help in the preoperative diagnosis of such lesions. AIMS: The aims of our study were to find the clinico-pathological presentation of extra-nasal rhinosporidiosis and to evaluate the role of cytology in diagnosing these lesions preoperatively. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Fine-needle aspiration cytology is often used for preoperative diagnosis of sub-cutaneous lesions of the head and neck region. This retrospe

Intracorneal rhinosporidiosis managed with deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty.

A healthy 22-year-old male presented to Institutional Cornea Clinic with an intracorneal mass overlying the pupil with lobulated edges having many tiny greyish white dots. The patient had a history of trauma while swimming in a pond with subsequent removal of intracorneal foreign body in the left eye approximately a year prior to presentation. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) confirmed that an intracorneal mass sparing deep stroma and Descemet's membrane. A deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) was performed in left eye and the mass was sent for histology examination. H

Strawberry-shaped lesion on the chest: cutaneous rhinosporidiosis.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous condition caused by the pathogen Rhinosporidium seeberi which frequently involves the nasopharynx and occasionally affects the skin. The disease has been reported from across the globe but the highest incidence has been from south India and Sri Lanka. This disease is commonly seen in adult men and the possible mode of transmission to humans is thought to be by direct contact with spores through dust, infected clothing, fingers, and swimming in stagnant water. The classical presentation is mucosal and here we present a case which presented as a growth

Two rare cases of rhinosporidiosis of parotid duct: Case reports and review of literature.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infective disease caused by fungi, Rhinosporidium seeberi. It can occur universally, is endemic in India, Sri Lanka and in South Asia, mainly reported from Southern India and Sri Lanka. Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic disease classically involving nose and nasopharynx and presents as a localized polypoid mass. Rhinosporidiosis involving parotid duct is rare. We encountered two cases of rhinosporidiosis at extremely unusual extranasal site-parotid duct, presenting as a cyst without nasal manifestations, which was misdiagnosed clinically and on cytologic

Morphological findings of deep cutaneous fungal infections.

Cutaneous fungal infections used to be rare in most developed countries. However, they have become more common due to immunosuppression and globalization. In this report, we summarize the histopathologic findings of the main cutaneous fungal infections that are commonly seen in daily practice, including eumycetoma, sporotrichosis, histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, coccidioidomycosis, aspergillosis, zygomycosis, phaeohyphomycosis, alternariosis, blastomycosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, lobomycosis, and chromoblastomycosis. We also include protothecosis (despite the fact that the infectious agent of

Rhinosporidiosis in the parotid duct: a rare case report.

Endemic to South India and Sri Lanka, Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by an agent of uncertain taxonomy: Rhinosporidium seeberi. Although it commonly manifests as a proliferative nasal lesion, many cases of Rhinosporidiosis have been reported where it has appeared as an extranasal lesion. The reported extranasal sites include the eye, ear, trachea, and parotid duct. However, the involvement of the parotid duct is quite rare, even among extranasal sites. The case presented is an adult female from the non-endemic zone of East India with a proliferative mass in the pa
