The association between encephalocele and radial defects is considered uncommon. These features have been occasionally described separately in certain recurrent conditions such as VACTERL association, oculo-auriculo-vertebral spectrum and Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18). DK-phocomelia is a rare syndrome characterized by both findings. However, Froster-Iskenius and Meinecke [1992, Clin Dysmorphol 1: 37-41] and Kunze et al. [1992, Eur J Pediatr 151: 467-468] reported patients presenting similar malformations. We proposed, through the description of an additional case, that these last patients pres

OBJECTIVE: Central nervous system (CNS) anomalies are the most common abnormalities of all malformations and can be diagnosed on routine prenatal ultrasonography (US). We aimed to find out fetal CNS anomaly rate in our clinic which is the referral center in the region.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 15000 pregnant women who were scanned for routine obstetric follow-up from January 2012 to July 2013 in our referral center. We diagnosed CNS anomalies in 41 fetuses by using high resolution ultrasound unit with 3.5 MHz transabdominal and 6 MHz transvaginal transducers.
RESULTS: CNS an

Frontal sinus back table fractures are seen rarely; also, typical presentation of frontal sinus encephalocele as a delayed complication of frontal sinus fracture is seen more rarely. We present a case of frontal encephalocele and recurrent meningitis as delayed complications of craniofacial trauma. Diagnosis, management, and treatment approaches of these complications are discussed.

Acalvaria is a rare congenital malformation characterized by an absence of skin and skull. The authors describe a newborn at an estimated 38 weeks gestational age who was delivered via cesarean section from a 32-year-old mother. Upon delivery, the child was noted to have a frontal encephalocele and an absence of calvaria including skull and skin overlying the brain. A thin membrane representing dura mater was overlying the cortical tissue. After multiple craniofacial operations, including repair of the encephalocele and application of cultured keratinocytes over the rostral defect, the patient

We explored the prevalence of syringomyelia in a series of 113 cases of fetal dysraphism and hindbrain crowding, of gestational age ranging from 17.5 to 34 weeks with the vast majority less than 26 weeks gestational age. We found syringomyelia in 13 cases of Chiari II malformations, 5 cases of Omphalocele/Exostrophy/Imperforate anus/Spinal abnormality (OEIS), 2 cases of Meckel Gruber syndrome and in a single pair of pyopagus conjoined twins. Secondary injury was not uncommon, with vernicomyelia in Chiari malformations, infarct like histology, or old hemorrhage in 8 cases of syringomyelia. Vern

The ciliopathies are a group of heterogeneous diseases with considerable variations in phenotype for allelic conditions such as Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS) and Joubert syndrome (JBTS) even at the inter-individual level within families. In humans, mutations in TMEM67 (also known as MKS3) cause both MKS and JBTS, with TMEM67 encoding the orphan receptor meckelin (TMEM67) that localizes to the ciliary transition zone. We now describe the Tmem67(tm1(Dgen/H)) knockout mouse model that recapitulates the brain phenotypic variability of these human ciliopathies, with categorization of Tmem67 mutant a

BACKGROUND: Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS) is a genetically heterogeneous severe ciliopathy characterised by early lethality, occipital encephalocele, polydactyly, and polycystic kidney disease.
PURPOSE: To report genetic analysis results in two families in which all known MKS diseases genes have been excluded.
METHODS: In two consanguineous families with classical MKS in which autozygome-guided sequencing of previously reported MKS genes was negative, we performed exome sequencing followed by autozygome filtration.
RESULTS: We identified one novel splicing mutation in TMEM231, which led to c

Cobblestone brain malformation (COB) is a neuronal migration disorder characterized by protrusions of neurons beyond the first cortical layer at the pial surface of the brain. It is usually seen in association with dystroglycanopathy types of congenital muscular dystrophies (CMDs) and ocular abnormalities termed muscle-eye-brain disease. Here we report homozygous deleterious mutations in LAMB1, encoding laminin subunit beta-1, in two families with autosomal-recessive COB. Affected individuals displayed a constellation of brain malformations including cortical gyral and white-matter signal abno

Encephalocele is a form of neural tube defect, characterized by protrusion out of the meninges and brain tissue through a bony skull defect. As per the site of origin, these encephaloceles have been classified into different types, out of which the frontoethmoidal one is exclusively common in Southeast Asia with a reported incidence of 1 in 5,000. Neurological outcome of such malformations depends on the size of the sac, neural tissue content, hydrocephalus, associated infection, and other pathologies that accompany this condition. Here we describe the anaesthetic concerns and perioperative ma

Ciliopathies are characterized by a pattern of multisystem involvement that is consistent with the developmental role of the primary cilium. Within this biological module, mutations in genes that encode components of the cilium and its anchoring structure, the basal body, are the major contributors to both disease causality and modification. However, despite rapid advances in this field, the majority of the genes that drive ciliopathies and the mechanisms that govern the pronounced phenotypic variability of this group of disorders remain poorly understood. Here, we show that mutations in CSPP1

The presence of torcula or sinus in the occipital encephalocele presents a challenge during surgery. However, a detailed study of magnetic resonance image and magnetic resonance venography can aid in preoperative localization of the torcula. Knowing the encephalocele's contents, its relationship with falx cerebri and falx cerebelli, and vigilance during surgery is a sure way to protect neural tissue. Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) may be indicated in torcular encephalocele. Here, authors report two such cases, one presented with ruptured encephalocele with cerebrospinal fluid leak and another c

Neural tube defects (NTDs) in mammals are rooted in aberrant neural tube closure during early embryogenesis, which is caused by multiple environmental and genetic factors. The Sonic Hedgehog pathway is involved in the induction of the floor plate and participates in formation of the neural tube. Mutation of the suppressor of fused gene (SUFU), an essential repressor of Sonic Hedgehog signaling pathway, can result in NTDs. A case-control study was designed to compare the frequencies of the polymorphism at four sites in the SUFU gene in control and NTDs group, as well as in subtype groups, inclu

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The efficacy of cerebrospinal fluid shunting to reduce intracranial hypertension and prevent fatal brain herniation in acute cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is unknown.
METHOD: From the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT) and a systematic literature review, we retrieved acute CVT patients treated only with shunting (external ventricular drain, ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculojugular shunt). Outcome was classified at 6 months and final follow-up by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS).
RESULTS: 15 patients were collected (9 from the IS
