Recurrent Pneumococcal Meningitis From Post-traumatic Frontoethmoidal Encephalocele: A Case Report.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis (≥2 episodes with complete recovery between episodes) warrants evaluation for skull-base defects with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and for immune deficiencies. In adults, Streptococcus pneumoniae often indicates an anatomic breach (e.g., post-traumatic encephalocele/CSF rhinorrhea), whereas Neisseria suggests complement deficiency. We report a case of a 22-year-old man with his second attack of pneumococcal meningitis within a one-year timeframe after sustaining a road traffic accident about four years ago. The patient sustained a left frontal bone fracture com

Frontal Encephalocele Plus Epilepsy: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

An encephalocele is a pathological brain herniation caused by osseous dural defects. Encephaloceles are known to be regions of epileptogenic foci. We describe the case of a 44-year-old woman with refractory epilepsy associated with a frontal skull base encephalocele. Epilepsy surgery for encephalocele resection was performed; however, the epilepsy was refractory. A second epilepsy surgery for frontal lobectomy using intraoperative electroencephalography was required to achieve adequate seizure control. Previous reports have shown that only encephalocele resection can result in good seizure con

Prenatal diagnosis of frontal encephalocele.

Encephalocele is a rare congenital form of neural tube defect characterized by a protrusion of the meninges and cerebral tissue through a skull defect. These defects are classified according to their location: frontal, parietal and occipital, the last one being the most common form of presentation. The prognosis is related to the anatomical site, the volume of the neural contents and the presence of coexisting abnormalities. Most pregnancies are terminated, since the prognosis is poor. We report a case of an isolated fetal frontal encephalocele diagnosed at 21 weeks of gestation.

Amniotic band syndrome with double encephalocele: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare condition of controversial etiology that is associated with varying degrees of anomalies. This study reports a case of a newborn with ABS associated with double encephalocele in the frontal region. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old primiparous woman with no history of prenatal infection or consanguineous marriage had a cesarean section at gestational week 38, giving birth to a newborn who was well but had limb anomalies (constriction rings, amputations, and syndactyly) and craniofacial anomalies, mainly double frontal encephalocele. The patient

The relationship between external bony defects and widened lateral interorbital distance in frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of the abnormal lateral interorbital distance (LIOD), micropthalmia or anopthalmia and incidence of hydrocephalus in frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele (FEEM), and to identify the correlation between the external bony defects and a widened lateral orbital wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: FEEM patients who were treated in the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2016, were retrospectively reviewed from the medical records. We included the patients who had undergone head computed tomograp

Non-Midline Frontal Encephalocele Presenting as Disappearing Dermoid.

Congenital masses in the lateral brow are most commonly dermoid cysts and can often be excised surgically without additional investigation. These dermoids may rarely develop intracranial extension due to underlying bony erosions and become less prominent over time - a "disappearing dermoid." However, the authors present an unusual alternative case in which an off-midline frontal encephalocele initially presented as a firm irreducible mass but exhibited changing characteristics over time.

Acquired Encephalocele With Hydrocephalus and Pineal Region Epidermoid Cyst.

A combination of trauma and a missed inflammatory response (nasal operation) concomitant with hydrocephalus and tumor in secondary encephalocele has not been described in the English literature yet. A 38-year-old man was admitted to the clinic with rhinorrhea that started 3 months ago. In his medical history, nothing abnormal was present except a nasal operation performed 1 year ago. Brain magnetic resonance imaging depicted left frontal encephalocele concomitant with obstructive hydrocephalus caused by an epidermoid cyst originated from the pineal region. A 2-staged surgery was planned. In th

Frontal Encephalocele Associated With a Bilateral Tessier Number Three Cleft and Fraser Syndrome.

Oblique craniofacial clefts and encephaloceles are each rare conditions, and only a few instances of these findings in combination have been described. Each pathologic entity presents a unique reconstructive challenge. The authors report the case of a male infant who presented with a large right frontoencephalocele and bilateral Tessier number 3 clefts. A review of the pertinent literature, including specific considerations related to perioperative management and technical aspects of the surgical approach, is discussed.

Recurrent meningitis and frontal encephalocele as delayed complications of craniofacial trauma.

Frontal sinus back table fractures are seen rarely; also, typical presentation of frontal sinus encephalocele as a delayed complication of frontal sinus fracture is seen more rarely. We present a case of frontal encephalocele and recurrent meningitis as delayed complications of craniofacial trauma. Diagnosis, management, and treatment approaches of these complications are discussed.

Acalvaria.

Acalvaria is a rare congenital malformation characterized by an absence of skin and skull. The authors describe a newborn at an estimated 38 weeks gestational age who was delivered via cesarean section from a 32-year-old mother. Upon delivery, the child was noted to have a frontal encephalocele and an absence of calvaria including skull and skin overlying the brain. A thin membrane representing dura mater was overlying the cortical tissue. After multiple craniofacial operations, including repair of the encephalocele and application of cultured keratinocytes over the rostral defect, the patient

The pattern of distribution of encephalocele in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital--a three year experience.

BACKGROUND: Encephalocele is a congenital anomaly that results from failure of complete neural tube closure during foetal development. It is a known cause of mortality and morbidity in infants. This study was carried out to highlight its distribution pattern in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital over a three-year-period. METHODOLOGY: This is a retrospective study of children with encephalocele admitted from January 2007 to December 2009. The following information were obtained from their medical records: sex, age at diagnosis, distribution pattern, place of origin, detailed antenat

New classification scheme of proboscis lateralis based on a review of 50 cases.

BACKGROUND: Among congenital nasal deformities, proboscis lateralis is one of the rarest. Boo-Chai classified proboscis lateralis into four groups. Recently, we encountered a new case of proboscis lateralis with median cleft lip. We noticed that this classification had not been considered according to convalescence and embryologics, and further refinement seemed to be needed. METHODS: We reviewed all cases of proboscis lateralis reported in English through 2009 and classified them by intercanthal distance. RESULTS: A total of 34 studies involving 50 cases were reviewed. Six cases were identi

Recurrent meningitis associated with frontal sinus tuber encephalocele in a patient with tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic neurocutaneous disorder that commonly affects the CNS. The most commonly associated brain tumors include cortical tubers, subependymal nodules, and subependymal giant cell astrocytomas (SEGAs). The authors report an unusual case of recurrent meningitis due to a tuber-containing encephalocele via the posterior wall of the frontal sinus. An 11-year-old girl presented with a history of TSC and previous SEGA resection via interhemispheric approach. She presented twice within 4 months with classic bacterial meningitis. Cerebrospinal fluid cultures revea

Colon atresia and frontal encephalocele: a rare association.

The association of colonic atresia with craniofacial anomalies has been well described and probably represents a malformative event that occurs in the early embryonal period. We present a case of an infant with colonic atresia and a frontal encephalocele and believe this to be a newly reported association. We review possible pathogenic mechanisms.

Unilateral CHARGE association.

UNLABELLED: A case with a predominantly unilateral CHARGE association is reported. The CHARGE association refers to a combination of congenital malformations. This boy had left-sided anomalies consisting of choanal atresia, coloboma and peripheral facial palsy. The infant had a frontal encephalocele, an anomaly not included in the definitions of CHARGE association. CONCLUSION: even when anomalies are predominantly unilateral, the CHARGE association should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
