A heterotopic cerebellum presenting as a suprasellar mass with associated nasopharyngeal teratoma.

We present a case of nasopharyngeal teratoma that was discovered in association with a suprasellar heterotopic cerebellum in a newborn. Well-differentiated, heterotopic, cerebellar masses have been reported in the orbits, spine, and frontal encephalocele but not, to our knowledge, in the suprasellar region. In this report, we describe the imaging findings and discuss the possible origins of the two masses discovered in this case.

Applications of intrathecal catheters in children.

Access to the intrathecal space may be required for sampling of cerebrospinal fluid for diagnostic purposes, for the administration of pharmacological agents, or for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage to lower intracranial pressure. The current report details five children in whom a percutaneously placed lumbar intrathecal catheter was used: (i) to provide intraoperative surgical anaesthesia instead of general anaesthesia (ii); to deliver intrathecal fentanyl to provide postoperative analgesia (iii); to provide chronic pain control during the terminal stages of metastatic malignancy; (iv) to a

Congenital anomalies in the teratological collection of Museum Vrolik in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. IV: closure defects of the neural tube.

The Museum Vrolik collection of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology of the University of Amsterdam, founded by Gerardus Vrolik (1775-1859) and his son Willem Vrolik (1801-1863), consists of more than 5,000 specimens of human and animal anatomy, embryology, pathology, and congenital anomalies. Recently, the collection of congenital anomalies, comprising 360 specimens, was recatalogued and redescribed according to contemporary morphogenetic opinions. The original descriptions, as far as preserved, were compared with the clinical and additional findings. Based on the classification by closur

Anophthalmia-microphthalmia-oblique clefting syndrome: confirmation of the Fryns anophthalmia syndrome.

We describe a patient with bilateral extreme microphthalmia with bilateral congenital glaucoma, bilateral medial oblique facial cleft ending in lid colobomas, bilateral stenosis of the choanae, bifid uvula, frontal encephalocele, and premature craniosynostosis. The cause is unknown, but the phenotype resembles the Fryns anophthalmia-plus syndrome, which may be a recessive trait, although intrauterine environmental factors cannot be excluded.

Uncommon craniospinal dysraphism.

The uncommon variants amongst 619 cases of craniospinal dysraphism have been studied between 1987 to 1993. Lateral cervical meningocele is an extremely rare condition as to date only ten cases are traceable in the world literature. Its pathogenesis is discussed in detail. Similarly, this case of lateral frontal encephalocele is the second such example. Orbital meningocele may be congenital or following trauma to the orbital roof. Besides other unusual locations like the vertex, posterior fontanelle and anterior sacral are also encountered. Thus this paper focuses on the aetiology, clinical pre

Endoscopic paranasal sinus surgery: radiographic evaluation of severe complications.

PURPOSE: To report our experience with the radiographic evaluation of severe complications resulting from the functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) procedure. PATIENTS: Ten major complications were reviewed retrospectively. FINDINGS: Ten major complications occurred. Eight of 10 had injury to the floor of the anterior cranial fossa, fovea ethmoidalis (roof of the ethmoid sinus), or roof of the sphenoid sinus. Six patients presented with meningitis or rhinorrhea, two presented with headache and massive pneumocephalus; one patient who presented with meningitis had a large nasal frontal en

Lipoma of the corpus callosum associated with frontal and facial anomalies.

Seven patients with a corpus callosum lipoma associated with a frontal cranial defect with or without a superficial lipoma or a fronto-nasal dysplasia, were encountered over a period of 12 years. This group of patients is reported as these associated lesions may provide a lead to the cause of lipomas of the corpus callosum as well as of the different lesions in the fronto-facial region. From our experience and that of others, the frontal lesion may be an extracranial lipoma, a frontal bone defect, with or without an external lipoma, a lipomeningocele connecting the extracranial lipoma through

Frontal encephalocele and the nasal cavity.

Congenital encephaloceles are rare lesions which are often present at the occipital region. Occasionally, they are encountered anteriorly where they may erode through the base of the skull or through a congenital defect in it and appear as a nasal polyp. We describe a case of an anterior basal encephalocele which presented with hypertelorism and was mistaken for a nasal polyp.

Three-dimensional computed tomographic scans in the planning of procedures for reconstructive craniofacial surgery.

Three-dimensional computed tomographic (3D CT) scans were used in the assessment of three cases being considered for craniofacial reconstructive surgery; the first patient had a frontal encephalocele, the second an orbital encephalocele and the third an apparent asymmetry of the face due to cervical scoliosis caused by developmental defects of the upper two cervical vertebrae. The 3D CT scans provided information which was of great help in deciding how best to manage each case.

Heterotopic growth of dysplastic cerebellum in frontal encephalocele in an infant of a diabetic mother.

An infant of a diabetic mother lived 13 days after birth. She had a small dysplastic 12.6 gm. brain, partly forming a frontal encephalocele. The uncleaved forebrain contained a mass of poorly organized heterotopic cerebellar cortex. The cerebellum itself had normal lamination, but was small and continuous with the dysplastic tissue. The ventricular system was absent except for a few midline ependymal rosettes, and the cerebral cortex was not developed. The cerebellar dysplasia resembled a proliferative and invasive lesion by its rostral extension.

Facial duplication: case, review, and embryogenesis.

The craniofacial anatomy of an infant with facial duplication is described. There were four eyes, two noses, two maxillae, and one mandible. Anterior to the single pituitary the brain was duplicated and there was bilateral arhinencephaly. Portions of the brain were extruded into a large frontal encephalocele. Cases of symmetrical facial duplication reported in the literature range from two complete faces on a single head (diprosopus) to simple nasal duplication. The variety of patterns of duplication suggests that the doubling of facial components arises in several different ways: Forking of t
