Giant frontonasal encephalocele: surgical considerations through a clinical case and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Encephalocele is a congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by the protrusion of neural tissue through a cranial defect. The frontonasal variant has a reported incidence of approximately 0.8 to 3 cases per 10,000 live births, making it a rare condition. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a newborn girl prenatally diagnosed with a giant nasofrontal encephalocele without associated pathologies. Following complementary studies for surgical planning, she underwent surgery at 72 h of life, performed by a multidisciplinary team, to prevent significant

Encephalocele presenting with bacteremia and meningitis.

An encephalocele is a cranial defect that allows brain matter to present in other portions of the skull. We present a case of a 57-year-old female who presented to the ICU with fever and unresponsiveness and was diagnosed with meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia. After diagnostic imaging was performed, a nasofrontal encephalocele was found and corrected via surgical intervention. The patient's nasofrontal encephalocele caused a predisposition for opportunistic infections due to the exposed and unprotected brain matter, which caused a simple case of sinusitis to turn into a life-threatening c

Nasofrontal encephalocele: A case report with literature and management review.

Encephalocele is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the protrusion of intracranial contents through a defect in the skull base or calvarial. In Southeast Asia, frontoethmoidal encephaloceles are more frequently observed compared to their occurrence in Western countries. Typically, frontoethmoidal encephaloceles present as a visible mass adjacent to the nasal region. In this report, we delineate the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented with a palpable mass on the nasal bridge. Subsequent ultrasound and CT scan evaluations identified a nasofrontal defect with a communicating connection

Nasofrontal encephalocele in a child, associated with a nasal dermal sinus in his mother: familial cranial malformations. Illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Dermal sinuses and encephaloceles are uncommon central nervous system malformations. The occurrence of these malformations in different members of a family is very rare. OBSERVATIONS: This report documents the unique case of a 10-month-old boy with a frontonasal encephalocele, born to a mother with a nasal dermal sinus. These two specific neural tube defects have not been previously reported as occurring between parent and child. LESSONS: This case demonstrates potential heritable links in central nervous system malformations through the occurrence of a frontonasal encephalocele

Managing an open nasofrontal encephalocele after birth.

Encephaloceles are relatively uncommon in western countries. Most of the reported cases involve occipital encephaloceles. Open frontal encephaloceles comprise a rare entity. Most of them will be detected during early prenatal diagnostic, whereas the majority of the pregnancies will be terminated after the consent of the parents. Open frontal encephaloceles pose a great challenge to neurosurgeons as well as anesthesiologists, as these infants present with a microcephaly, non-physiological intracranial anatomy, and low birth weight, thus making the infant prone to excessive blood loss, hypotherm

Management of an open nasofrontal encephalocele during the first day of life.

Nasofrontal encephaloceles are extremely rare craniofacial defects that present with herniation of cerebral tissue through the junction of the frontal and nasal bones. They often have a cutaneous covering which allows management to be delayed until early infancy, decreasing the risks of anesthesia and acute blood loss. Further bone development also facilitates cranial remodeling. Encephaloceles with a compromised cutaneous envelope pose an imminent threat to life due to the risk of meningitis, necessitating surgical repair in the first days of life. This report presents a patient born with an

Clinical delineation of a subtype of frontonasal dysplasia with creased nasal ridge and upper limb anomalies: Report of six unrelated patients.

Frontonasal dysplasias are rare congenital malformations of frontonasal process-derived structures, characterized by median cleft, nasal anomalies, widely spaced eyes, and cranium bifidum occultum. Several entities of syndromic frontonasal dysplasia have been described, among which, to date, only a few have identified molecular bases. We clinically ascertained a cohort of 124 individuals referred for frontonasal dysplasia. We identified six individuals with a similar phenotype, including one discordant monozygous twin. Facial features were remarkable by nasal deformity with creased ridge and d

Sincipital Encephaloceles: A Study of Associated Brain Malformations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the associated intracranial malformations in patients with sincipital encephaloceles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted over 8 years from June 2007 to May 2015 on 28 patients. The patients were evaluated by either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging whichever was feasible. Encephaloceles were described with respect to their types, contents, and extensions. A note was made on the associated malformations with sincipital encephaloceles. RESULTS: Fifty percent of the patients presented befor

Intermittent palpebral oedema following surgery for nasofrontal encephalocele.

PURPOSE: To report a case of intermittent palpebral oedema secondary to a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, following encephalocele surgery. CLINICAL CASE: A 9-year-old girl consulted with a history of intermittent swelling of the left upper and lower eyelid. The symptoms started at the age of one. As a relevant fact in her medical history, a neurosurgical repair of a nasofrontal encephalocele at the age of 9 months was withheld. Elaborate imaging studies demonstrated a leakage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into the preseptal periorbital soft tissues, originating from a bony defect in the med

Osmotic myelinolysis with malignant cerebellar edema occurring after DDAVP-induced hyponatremia in a child.

Central pontine myelinolysis (CPM) and extrapontine myelinolysis (EPM) are dire neurological disorders, characterized by severe damage to the myelin sheath of neurons, which typically result from rapid correction or overcorrection of systemic hyponatremia. For many years, both conditions have been considered universally fatal, though survivors have been reported more recently. Pediatric cases are rare. We present a 13-year-old boy with panhypopituitarism secondary to repair of a nasofrontal encephalocele in infancy, managed on long-term corticosteroid, deamino arginine vasopressin and thyroid

Congenital midline nasofrontal mass. Two case reports with a clinical review.

Because of aberrant embryologic development, encephalocele, nasal dermoid, and glioma may present as a nasofrontal midline mass in a newborn infant. Though uncommon, vascular malformation or hemangioma in the nasofrontal region may present similarly. The correct diagnosis and early management of a nasofrontal mass is imperative because complications such as brain herniation, hypertelorism, or cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea may ensue, resulting in poor facial or visual development, recurrent meningitis, and brain abscess. Nasofrontal encephalocele and midline frontal vascular malformation are r

Intraoperative management of an infant with a nasofrontal encephalocele.

1. An encephalocele is a congenital malformation in which the structures of the central nervous system, in communication with cerebrospinal fluid pathways, herniate through a cranial defect. 2. Classification of encephaloceles depends on their anatomical location within the cranium, and the prognosis and treatment largely depend on the site of such defects. 3. Although the operation is delayed until the infant gains strength, early correction (within the first month) minimizes facial deformity, prevents further damage to brain tissue herniating through the defect, and increases the chance of n
