Dandy-Walker syndrome together with occipital encephalocele.

Dandy-Walker malformation is an anomaly characterized by dysgenesis of the foramina of Magendie and Lushka in the upper 4(th) ventricle, hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis and agenesis of the corpus callosum. Encephalocele is diagnosed from the calvarium defect, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and herniation of the meninges. It is the rarest neural tube defect. A 7 x 9 cm encephalocele was found on physical examination of a 6-day old baby boy patient. From cranial magnetic resonance, it was seen that the posterior fossa was enlarged with cysts and there was agenesis of the vermis. A connection was

Tectocerebellar dysraphia and occipital encephalocele: an unusual association with abdominal situs inversus and congenital heart disease.

Tectocerebellar dysraphia is a rare constellation of malformations comprising of occipital encephalocele, aplasia of the cerebellar vermis and deformity of the tectum. We describe a 7 month old infant who presented with tectocerebellar dysraphia associated with double outlet right ventricle, pulmonary stenosis and abdominal situs inversus. This association has not been reported in the literature, to the best of our knowledge.

[Diabetic mother's newborn with Goldenhar syndrome and cerebral malformations. Case report].

Goldenhar syndrome, also known as oculo-auriculo-vertebral syndrome, is a rare illness with unknown etiology. It happens in 1 of 50,000 newborns and is characterized by first and second brachial arch changes, with variable grades of hemifacial hypoplasia. We report a clinical case of a 39-years-old woman with a BMI of 33, family history of diabetes mellitus decease, and two fetal losses with unknown etiology. We first met patient at 24 gestational weeks. Second level ultrasound findings were: fetus with tri-ventricular obstructive hydrocephalia, symmetrical macrocranium, and occipital encephal

Occipital mega encephalocele. Case report.

Encephalocele is a central nervous system malformation characterized by the herniation of the intracranial structures through a bony defect of the skull table. This is a case of a newborn female with a mega occipital encephalocele due to herniation of a part of the ventricular system. Urgent resection of the encephalocele and reconstruction of the meningeal and bone sheaths were performed. Nonetheless encephalocele has a poor prognosis and the surgical resection of particularly voluminous herniated masses can usually provoke severe deficits. The little patient, at discharge, one month after su

Molecular diagnostics of Meckel-Gruber syndrome highlights phenotypic differences between MKS1 and MKS3.

Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS) is a recessively inherited, lethal disorder characterized by renal cystic dysplasia, occipital encephalocele, polydactyly and biliary dysgenesis. MKS is genetically heterogeneous with three loci mapped and two identified; MKS1 (17q23) and MKS3 (8q22.1). MKS1 is part of the Finnish disease heritage, while MKS3 has been described exclusively in consanguineous Asian families. Here we aimed to establish molecular diagnostics for MKS, determine the importance of MKS1 and MKS3 in non-consanguineous populations, and study genotype/phenotype correlations. The coding region

Syndromic encephalocele in a fetal case with a 1p35-pter deletion and a 14q32-qter duplication inherited from a maternal balanced translocation.

Occipital encephalocele belongs to the family of neural tube defects, which occur in one among 2000 to 5000 live births. Syndromic encephaloceles include Meckel-Gruber syndrome and various chromosomal abnormalities. We report on a fetal case (13 WG) with bilateral cleft lip and palate, choanal atresia, occipital encephalocele, bilateral club feet, bilateral multicystic kidneys, enlarged bladder and urethral atresia. The fetal chromosome analysis showed a maternally inherited unbalanced translocation between the short arm of chromosome 1 and the long arm of chromosome 14, resulting in 1p35-pter

A girl with del(4)(q33) and occipital encephalocele: clinical description and molecular genetic characterization of a rare patient.

We present clinical and developmental data on a girl with a de novo terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 4, del(4)(q33). The patient was evaluated at birth and followed up until 5 years of age. She showed facial and digital dysmorphism, a complex congenital heart defect, a large occipital encephalocele, and postnatal growth deficiency. Her neuropsychomotor milestones were delayed, and she developed learning difficulties. Apart from standard Giemsa banding, a molecular genetic analysis was performed using a comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) array. This revealed a terminal delet

Diagnosis of Chiari III malformation by second trimester fetal MRI with postnatal MRI and CT correlation.

We report a case of Chiari III malformation diagnosed by fetal MRI. Ultrasound (US) performed at a gestational age of 18 weeks demonstrated a posterior skull base cyst. Repeat US at 19 weeks demonstrated neural tissue in the cyst, consistent with an encephalocele. MR imaging at 23 weeks confirmed the presence of an occipital encephalocele, demonstrated additional bony defect in the upper cervical spine, and identified abnormal morphology and position of the brainstem consistent with the diagnosis of Chiari III. Postnatal MRI and CT confirmed the fetal MRI findings and demonstrate the utility o

Surgical treatment of 13 pediatric patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome.

We present our experience with the treatment of 13 patients with Dandy-Walker syndrome. The common presenting symptom and associated central nervous system anomaly were enlargement of head and occipital encephalocele, respectively. Eleven out of 13 patients were treated surgically after stabilization of systemic medical status. Two patients could not be operated because of poor medical condition. In 6 patients with an opened passage between posterior fossa cyst and lateral ventricle, cystoperitoneal shunt system with medium pressure valve was the treatment of choice. In 5 patients with no rela

Mapping of a novel type III variant of Knobloch syndrome (KNO3) to chromosome 17q11.2.

Knobloch syndrome (KNO) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by ocular abnormalities (myopia and retinal detachment) and occipital encephalocele. The syndrome is clinically and genetically heterogeneous (KNO1, KNO2). Previously germline mutations in COL18A1 (21q22.3) were detected in some families, but in other kindreds linkage to COL18A1 was excluded. We ascertained a large consanguineous family with high myopia, vitreoretinal degeneration and occipital scalp defect with autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. Due to the overlapping clinical presentation of this family with Knobl

Meckel syndrome in the Hutterite population is actually a Joubert-related cerebello-oculo-renal syndrome.

Meckel syndrome (MKS) is a rare lethal autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the presence of occipital encephalocele, cystic kidneys, fibrotic changes of the liver and polydactyly. Joubert syndrome (JS)-related disorders (JSRDs) or cerebello-oculo-renal syndromes (CORS) are a group of recessively inherited conditions characterized by a molar tooth sign (MTS) on cranial MRI, a set of core clinical features (developmental delay/mental retardation, hypotonia, ataxia, episodic breathing abnormalities, abnormal eye movements) and variable involvement of other systems including renal, ocular

Meckel syndrome: genetics, perinatal findings, and differential diagnosis.

Meckel syndrome (MKS) is a lethal, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by occipital encephalocele, bilateral renal cystic dysplasia, hepatic ductal proliferation, fibrosis and cysts, and polydactyly. Genetic heterogeneity of MKS has been established by three reported MKS loci, i.e., MKS1 on 17q23, MKS2 on 11q13, and MKS3 on 8q21.13-q22.1. MKS1 encodes a component of flagellar apparatus basal body proteome, which is associated with ciliary function. MKS3 encodes a seven-transmembrane receptor protein, meckelin. The identification of the MKS3 gene as well as the MKS1 gene enables molecula

The transmembrane protein meckelin (MKS3) is mutated in Meckel-Gruber syndrome and the wpk rat.

Meckel-Gruber syndrome is a severe autosomal, recessively inherited disorder characterized by bilateral renal cystic dysplasia, developmental defects of the central nervous system (most commonly occipital encephalocele), hepatic ductal dysplasia and cysts and polydactyly. MKS is genetically heterogeneous, with three loci mapped: MKS1, 17q21-24 (ref. 4); MKS2, 11q13 (ref. 5) and MKS3 (ref. 6). We have refined MKS3 mapping to a 12.67-Mb interval (8q21.13-q22.1) that is syntenic to the Wpk locus in rat, which is a model with polycystic kidney disease, agenesis of the corpus callosum and hydroceph

[Association of occipital encephalocele with vesicoureteral reflux].

Occipital encephalocele was associated with vesicoureteral reflux and agenesis of the os coccygeum in a small-for-gestational age newborn girl. The symptoms did not correspond to any of the syndromes with encephalocele. The present observation and data of the literature suggest that the significance of vesicoureteral reflux in syndrome diagnosis is generally underestimated.
