The 3C syndrome (cranio-cerebello-cardiac dysplasia or the Ritscher-Schinzel syndrome) is a recently delineated condition involving abnormalities of the cranium (large head with prominent forehead), cerebellum (Dandy-Walker cyst and vermis hypoplasia), and cardiac (primarily septal) defects. At least 20 individuals with this condition have been reported in the past 11 years. We report on a girl with the 3C syndrome who at 13 years of age is the oldest patient reported to date. She has been followed since birth, allowing us to show the evolution of her phenotype over time. In addition, she has

Two cases of isolated fourth ventricle are reported, the first due to cerebellar haemorrhage, and the second due to congenital hydrocephalus with multiple shunt revisions and Dandy-Walker cyst. In our opinion, there are two basic treatment for isolated forth ventricle. The direct approach to the fourth ventricle is indicated when there is presence of an intraventricular cyst. The fourth ventricular shunting, independent of the supratentorial shunt, is the best treatments for patients with an isolated fourth ventricle without the presence of a cyst.

Agenesis of the cerebellar vermis (paleocerebellar agenesis) with fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres (rhombencephalosynapsis) is a rare malformation of the central nervous system (CNS). Its combination with synencephaly (telencephalosynapsis), telencephalic ventricular aplasia, aqueductal atresia and cystic fourth ventricle has not yet been described, as far as we know. Here, we report this combination in a 23-weeks' gestation male fetus who was aborted to a 24-year-old diabetic mother. In this fetus with cerebral and cerebellar hemispheric fusion, vermian agenesis was associated with a Dand

Cystic lesions of the posterior fossa remain a controversial subject as to clinical classification and diagnosis, especially for those in combination with other intracranial abnormalities. During the period of November 1985 to June 1991, 16 patients with cystic lesions of the posterior fossa were retrospectively reviewed on neuroradiological evaluation with MR images. The patients were 9 males and 7 females aged from 5 days to 15 years old (medium 1 year old). They were classified into three groups as Dandy-Walker cyst (group A, 5 patients), mega cisterna magna (group B, 4) and retrocerebellar

Cerebellar hypoplasia may present with a wide variety of neurological and systemic features, ranging from aplasia causing neonatal death to mild hypoplasia in an asymptomatic adult. MRI clearly documents the size of the cerebellum and any associated abnormalities. We describe 7 cases of cerebellar hypoplasia of varying aetiology--3 inherited, 2 associated with spinal dysraphism, 1 with Joubert's syndrome and 1 with pontine agenesis, probably as a result of basilar artery infarction in utero. T1- and T2-weighted images were obtained in each case and gadolinium-DTPA was administered in one. Asso

A case is reported of hydrocephalus due to overproduction of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) caused by villous hypertrophy of the choroid plexus in the lateral ventricles. A 7-year-old girl with mental retardation developed gait disturbance; hydrocephalus and a Dandy-Walker cyst were detected on computerized tomography. She was initially treated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt; however, shunting failed to control the hydrocephalus. The excessive outflow of CSF suggested choroid plexus abnormality, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed enlargement of the choroid plexus in both lateral ventri

One case of Dandy - Walker cyst associated with occipital meningocoele is presented. In this case magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a Dandy - Walker cyst in direct communication with an occipital meningocoele. Occipital meningocoele might simply be an expression of increased intracystic pressure in Dandy-Walker cyst in embryonic life, or such association might suggest morphogenetic situation during embryogenesis.

The authors report on a patient with tetrasomy 9p and 9qh due a karyotype 47,XY,+dic(9)(q12) in lymphocytes and a normal karyotype in fibroblasts. Clinical and complementary investigation revealed a malformation syndrome with many anomalies like those of trisomy 9p as well as Dandy-Walker cyst and Hirschsprung disease not previously described in tetrasomy 9p.

Linear echoes are seen in the fetal cisterna magna, (CM) on obstetrical sonography. These echoes often are paired, joining as they descend toward the base of the posterior fossa. Histologic correlation suggests that these echoes are most consistent with dural folds, which likely represent the inferior attachment of the falx cerebelli. A prospective series of 322 prenatal studies was performed in which the sonographer was asked to look for the linear echoes in the cisterna magna and image them. Linear echoes were identified in 84% of all fetuses studied. Identification of these echoes was depen

A 27-year-old gravida two para one mother delivered a term male baby by caesarean section. The baby was referred for enlarged head. This neonate with large head was found to have Porencephalic cyst with dilated Triventricular system. There was a posterior fossa cyst communicating with fourth ventricle. A diagnosis of Dandy Walker Cyst with Porencephaly was made. Ventriculo-Peritoneal shunt was done on the ninth day of life. The baby had an uneventful postoperative period and was subsequently discharged.

Ivemark et al. first described sibs with renal-hepatic-pancreatic dysplasia (RHPD) (Ivemark BI, Oldfelt V, Zetterström R (1959): Acta Pediatr Scand 48: 1-11). Subsequent reports of affected individuals have described additional malformations and syndromes associated with RHPD. In this paper we describe 2 sibs with RHPD in association with Dandy-Walker cyst (DW). Through an examination of the pattern of associated malformations seen in RHPD we argue that RHPD-DW is a distinct monogenetic syndrome, and not an association.

A distinct triad of central nervous system (CNS) malformations (prosencephalic dysgenesis, occipital exencephalocele and rhombic roof dysgenesis) was present in seven cases of the Meckel-Gruber syndrome examined at autopsy. We compared our findings with those previously described. Microcephaly, sloping forehead, posterior occipital exencephalocele, cerebellar hypoplasia, Chiari malformation, hydrocephalus, polymicrogyria, arhinencephaly, holoprosencephaly and anencephaly constituted a broad spectrum of the reported CNS anomalies. Few reports contained a comprehensive description of the observe

A case of holoprosencephaly associated with Dandy-Walker cyst is reported. The patient was a male baby whose mother had normal serum titers for toxoplasma, syphilis, rubella and hepatitis B. She had no history of diabetes mellitus, administration of drugs or irradiation during the pregnancy. At the 8th month of gestation, fetal hydrocephalus was diagnosed by ultrasonic imaging. He was delivered by caesarean section at 34 weeks and 4 days, weighing 2,644 g. His head circumference was 42 cm; the anterior fontanel was not distended and its tension was normal. The chromosomal karyotype was a norma

Rubinstein-Taybi is a rare malformative syndrome characterized by dysmorphic features and mental retardation. Early diagnosis in neonatal age can be facilitated by the presence of characteristic broadening of the distal phalanges of thumbs and great toes. Most of the cases are sporadic. Associated malformations such as bone anomalies, heart malformations, cell immunity deficits and metabolic alterations have been observed. This paper reports the first case of Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome associated with Dandy-Walker type cerebral malformation diagnosed in the neonatal period.

Upward transtentorial herniation of a Dandy-Walker cyst is a potentially fatal complication, particularly after solitary shunting of the lateral ventricle for associated hydrocephalus. Two patients with upward transtentorial herniation of their Dandy-Walker cysts are presented to illustrate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with the demonstration of unique 'keyhole' and 'snail' signs on the axial and sagittal MR images, respectively. In both patients, double and simultaneous shunting en-Y of a lateral ventricle and the posterior fossa cyst resulted in the resolution of th

A variety of congenital malformations of the brain can be diagnosed by cranial sonography. Those which alter macroscopic morphology can be recognized and their findings are similar to those seen on computed tomography and pneumoencephalography. The ultrasonic findings in Dandy-Walker cyst are described in this report.

Dandy-Walker cyst associated with occipital meningocele is very rare. Only 12 patients have been reported. We report a female infant with Dandy-Walker cyst and occipital meningocele whose diagnosis was suspected antenatally by in utero ultrasonography. At birth, head circumference was normal for 37 weeks gestation. She underwent surgical repair of the occipital meningocele immediately after birth. The post-operative course was uneventful until the sixth day of life when progressive enlargement of the head with progressive ventricular dilatation was recognized. Communication between the posteri

We report two patients with alobar holoprosencephaly and cebocephaly: one, a fetus at 20th week of gestation; the second, a new born who died at seven days of age. Its very important U.S.G. in the prenatal diagnosis. Patients with holoprosencephaly and extracephalic malformation warrant chromosome analysis, because the incidence of chromosomal anomalies is very high. In the first foetus the brain and the face anomalies were associated with omphalocele, ureteropathy, bifid and horned uterus. In the second child karyotype analysis was normal. Cranial C.A.T. scan is important in the new born for

Thirty one cases of prenatally diagnosed CSN malformations were encountered in our institutions between 1982 and 1988. There were 42 disclosed lesions including 24 hydrocephalus, 3 anencephaly, 3 myeloschisis, 3 holoprosencephaly, 3 encephalocele, 2 Dandy-Walker cyst, 1 hydroencephalodysplasia, 1 brain tumor (Teratoma), 1 sacrococcygeal teratoma and 1 sacral agenesis. The gestational age at diagnosis ranged from 24 to 40 weeks of gestation (average 33.4 weeks). All were diagnosed by ultrasonography, and either MRI or whole body CT was additionally performed to evaluate the morphology in ten pa
