The ACTA-scanner, a device for computerized axial tomography, permits cross-sectional radiographic study of the entire human body, including the spine. In the ACTA-scan, the spinal cord appears as a roundish formation surrounded by the less dense subarachnoidal cerebrospinal fluid. The spines of 18 patients with verified (nine cases) or suspected (nine cases) syringomyelia were studied by ACTA-scanning. Although recent advance in neurological surgery has diminished mortality rate of aneurysmal surgery, there still exist several complex problems for the management of aneurysms. Choroid plexus in experimentally induced hydrocephalic dogs according to the Wisniewski's method was examined by an electron microscope. Epithelial cell of the choroid plexus appeared in various deformation and formed a marked dilatation of extracellular spaces between apposed two cell membranes and at the basal interdigitation. Dilatation of the extracellular space was more pronounced at the stromal side of the epithelial layer. Mutagenization of measles virus with proflavine produced a temperature-sensitive mutant capable of inducing hydrocephalus following intracranial inoculation of newborn hamsters. Hydrocephalus was not produced by the parental strain or by other measles virus mutants. Thus, mutants can be the causative agents of disease not associated with the parental strain. The results dictate caution in the use and distribution of experimentally induced virus variants.

Between August 1973 and April 1974 more than 750 patients had computerized axial tomography (CT) scans at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Performance on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale and Halstead neuropsychological measures were investigated in two groups of adult subjects with major motor epilepsy of early (0 to 5 yr) and later (17 to 50 yr) onset, and in two groups with early and later onset of brain damage without epilepsy. C.S.F. resistance to flow (Rf) was measured in 24 patients by the mean of a constant infusion manometric test, and the results were compared with those of pneumo-encephalography and isotope cisternography. It is concluded that Rf is constantly elevated in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus, is at least as reliable as the two other tests and therefore provides a really valuable aid to the identification of the patients to be shunted.

Liquor-scintigraphic examinations were carried out with Yb 169-DTPA in two patients, who were offering - clinically as well as by pneumo-encephalographic findings - the picture of a cerebro-atrophic process. A hitherto unreported cardiovascular complication of ventriculovenous shunts for hydrocephalus, involving the pulmonary valve apparatus, is described in two boys. This complication was the result of catheter migration with its proximal end interfering with pulmonary valve function. A series of 150 pneumoencephalograms which included 24 h films was reviewed to evaluate previous contradictory reports concerning changes in ventricular size at 24 h and to establish whether it is useful to obtain these follow-up films. A definition of "Hydrocephalus not completely arrested" is not easy to be given. Cerebral pneumography represents the most detailed neuroradiological examination. In order to check the constancy of convexity block, the airencephalograms (AEG) of seventeen patients who had undergone two separate examinations were reexamined. The patient, a 59-year-old man, was referred to a psychiatric hospital with what appeared initially to be the signs and symptoms of mental disorder. 698 children below age sixteen years with severe mental handicap (below IQ50) who were admitted to hospital between 1956 and 1959 were surveyed for genetic prognosis. The adducted thumbs syndrome is characterized by cleft palate, microcephaly, and dysmyelination. A fifth case of this syndrome is presented. Several other syndromes which may present with adducted thumbs are reviewed and re-assessed. The original contributions consist of discussions of (1) the possible pathogenesis of adducted thumbs in the congenital clasped thumb syndrome, and (3) the significance of adducted thumbs as a possible marker in sex-linked hydrocephalus.

It has been presumed that idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus is due to obstruction. We visualized the ventricles in 19 patients subsequent to shunting. We found no consistent relationship between clinical improvement after shunting and reduction in ventricular size. This suggests that the positive effect of shunting in at least some instances is due to some other factor than reduced ventricular size.

This paper presents a four-year-old Nigerian male child who developed volvulus of the small intestine three years after the successful establishment of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt for his hydrocephalus. There is only one other report in the literature of this complication. In view of the increasing use of ventriculo-peritoneal CSF diversion for hydrocephalus, it is necessary to be aware of the rare and unusual cause of an acute abdomen.
