The encephalitogenic potential of nine temperature-sensitive mutants of measles virus was determined in newborn golden Syrian hamsters. The parental virus produced acute encephalitis without any prior adaptation. Six of the mutants were attenuated, two were virulent, and one was associated with hydrocephalus with acute onset. An account of the significance of intracranial pressure is followed by a review of the various sites in which it can be recorded (spinal canal, lateral ventricles, subarachnoidal spaces, operation cavity, other sites). Monitoring of ventricular pressure is discussed in detail; this deals with the classic site and its technique has become part of clinical practice. The utilisation and interpretation of the data in the form of pressure levels and their changes in the course of time are also discussed. The clinical indications for monitoring are noted.

Isotope studies are well-tolerated examinations in various congenital CNS anomalies and are valuable in demonstrating the presence of associated hydrocephalus, abnormal accumulation of isotope associated with abnormal CSF flow or a failure of absorption. In some cases these studies may be of differential diagnostic value and a helpful indicator in the choice of surgical treatment. These tests do not disturb the CSF equilibrium which is often observed following air or other contrast studies.

Sixty-seven defects of the nervous system of lambs were examined during a 3-year investigation. Two cases of arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus are presented, bringing the number of such cases reported to 16. One of these was successfully removed surgically after two episodes of intraventricular hemorrhage. The other was found incidently at autopsy and had produced an asymmetric hydrocephalus. Overproduction with a more forceful propulsion of cerebrospinal fluid may be the mechanism producing this effect. These lesions should be considered in cases of unexplained intraventricular hemorrhage.

Eight cases of obstructive hydrocephalus manifesting palsy of upward gaze and other features of the Sylvian aqueduct syndrome are reported. During the crisis of intracranial hypertension, all of them developed upward gaze palsy and variable abnormalities of the convergence mechanism such as paralysis, spasm, and convergence nystagmus. In this paper we report a child who had extensive neoplastic infiltration of the meninges which defied clinical detection. We believe that any patient with a past or present history of tumor who presents with increased intracranial pressure should be presumed to have intracranial neoplastic involvement, even in the face of negative diagnostic studies. As in this case, other causes of increased intracranial pressure should be systematically excluded.

Two hundred and thirty-four cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from 183 different children were analysed for total lactate dehydrogenase (LD) activity and LD isoenzyme distribution. Two children of mothers who, in the second half of pregnancy, had been in touch with golden hamsters, had an internal hydrocephalus at birth and extensive chorio-retinitic scars in both eyes. One newborn also had myopia magna, the other severe bilirubinaemia.
