From 866 embryos of mice heterozygous by Roberstsonian translocations 54 ones (6,2%) had trisomy of one of translocated chromosomes. The frequency of trisomy is unique for each translocation, dependent on other chromosomal redistributions in the karyotype and on sex of heterozygous individuals. Trisomy of all the autosomes studied (N 1, 5, 8, 9, 14, 15, 17, 19) results in a characteristic complex of non-specific malformations which includes general delay in development, reduction of the cephalic portion of the nervous tube, cranio-fascial malformations, hypertrophy of the heart cavities. Decreased ventilatory response to carbon dioxide is often present in lung disease. This can be due to a reduction in the output of the respiratory center or an inability of the respiratory pump to respond to a normal output because of the size or impedence of the pump. To separate these mechanisms we have measured the isometric force developed by the respiratory muscle during brief airway occlusion, by measuring the pressure generated at 100 msec (Pm100). We studied 43 subjects ranging in age from 6 to 50 years, and nine neonates. We found a linear rise of Pm100 with rising PAco2 during carbon

"White"tigers show an inherited reduction of pigment, produced by an autosomal recessive gene. The brain of one of these tigers shows an abnormality of the visual pathways similar to abnormalities that are associated with albinism in many other mammals. There is a close relationship between the reduced pigment formation, the pathway abnormality, and strabismus.

Thiamine-deficient encephalopathy is characterized by morphologic lesions in the brainstem and less extensively in the cerebellum, but the early neurologic signs reverse rapidly and fully with thiamine, indicating a metabolic disorder. The suggested causal mechanisms of the encephalopathy involve two thiamine-dependent enzymes: (a) impairment of pyruvate decarboxylase activity with decreased cerebral energy (ATP) synthesis, and (b) reduction of transketolase activity with possible impairment of the hexose monophosphate shunt and subsequent decrease in NADPH formation. The latter may be importa
