Sleep profile in patients with septo-optic-pituitary dysplasia: protocol for a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Children with septo-optic-pituitary dysplasia (SOD) may experience a range of visual impairments and hormonal dysfunctions beyond developmental delay/intellectual disability. The literature describes sleep fragmentation, circadian rhythm disruptions and reduced sleep efficiency. These manifestations are believed to be closely linked to both structural and functional abnormalities associated with SOD, potentially disrupting the natural circadian rhythm. Both anomalies in midline brain structures and decreased visual input could potentially impact melatonin secretion, although a di

The Prevalence of Septo-Optic Dysplasia in Neonates with Absent Cavum Septi Pellucidi Identified during Routine Prenatal Imaging.

This study aimed to determine the prevalence of septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) in patients with prenatally identified absent cavum septi pellucidi (CSP), agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), or dysgenesis of the corpus callosum (DCC).This retrospective chart review investigated neonates prenatally diagnosed with an absent CSP, ACC, or DCC who were admitted to a single quaternary academic medical center in the Pacific Northwest between 2016 and 2023. This prenatal diagnosis prompted a routine and protocolized postnatal workup for SOD including laboratory evaluation, imaging, and specialty consul

Septo-optic Dysplasia in a Patient With Increased Socioeconomic Needs: A Case Report.

Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is a congenital disorder characterized by a triad of ophthalmologic, neurologic, and hypothalamic-pituitary developmental dysfunctions. This case describes a 25-year-old woman with SOD and multiple associated endocrinopathies, including diabetes insipidus, who presented to the hospital after running out of subcutaneous desmopressin that was adequately controlling her diabetes insipidus. Her family expressed concerns about the standard intranasal formulation due to a history of adverse effects. The endocrinology team developed a tailored treatment plan to address the

Unilateral schizencephaly open lip with septo optic dysplasia in adult woman with glaucoma: A rare case.

This case report presents a 38-year-old female with unilateral open-lip schizencephaly coexisting with septo-optic dysplasia. The patient lacked motor deficits, maintaining normal developmental milestones. schizencephaly is a rare cortical malformation characterized presence of abnormal cleft in the cerebral hemispheres of the brain. These clefts extend from the surface of the brain to the ventricles. Lissencephaly can be unilateral and bilateral and divided into open lips and closed lip. It is frequently associated with other anomaly such as septo-optic dysplasia, grey matter heterotopia, sep

Developmental, Endocrine, and Ophthalmologic Outcomes in Children Prenatally Diagnosed With Midline Brain Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Midline brain malformations (MBMs) are commonly prenatally diagnosed and associated with endocrinologic, ophthalmic, and adverse developmental outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all neonates identified prenatally with suspected MBMs between 2018 and 2022 at the only multidisciplinary referral center in a multistate region. Abnormalities were categorized as isolated versus complicated absent cavum septum pellucidum (ASP) (N = 11 vs N = 13) or corpus callosum abnormalities (AgCC) (N = 11 vs N = 43) or holoprosencephaly spectrum (N = 12). Septo-optic dysplasia and gastroschisis: trends in birth prevalence and association with maternal age.

UNLABELLED: This study aims to describe the risk factors and trends in birth prevalence of septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) and gastroschisis between 1980 and 2023. This descriptive, population-based study of SOD and gastroschisis used Western Australian Register of Developmental Anomalies data from 1980 to 2023. Birth prevalence was calculated using Midwives Notification System data for all births after 20 weeks gestation. Relative risk (RR) for SOD and gastroschisis showed risk by maternal age. SOD and gastroschisis occurred in 99 and 391 cases respectively (no dual diagnoses), with a birth preva

Undiagnosed complex neurological malformation in a geriatric patient presenting with seizures.

Atretic cephaloceles, grey matter heterotopia, and septo-optic dysplasia are uncommon congenital cerebral malformations commonly diagnosed in children. The case is a rare one in which atretic parietal cephalocele, grey matter heterotopia, and septo-optic dysplasia are seen concurrently and diagnosed in a 60-year-old man with a history of focal onset seizures. In contrast to their congenital origin, the patient never experienced antecedent neurodevelopmental delay or significant endocrine disturbances. The case requires the consideration of the role of MRI in identifying unsuspected congenital

Disruptive lesions can cause developmental anomalies in the fetal brain: Mini-review.

The development of the fetal central nervous system (CNS) is a complex process influenced by genetic, environmental, and physiological factors. The absence of identifiable genetic variants and low risk of recurrence in families with certain brain malformations has led to the hypothesis that disruptive events may play a critical role in the development of brain malformations. These events include disruption of blood flow, ischemia, hemorrhage, placental insufficiency, prenatal drug exposure (e.g cocaine), and infections (e.g CMV). Likely disruptive anomalies include polymicrogyria (PMG), cerebe

Challenges in diagnosing diaphragmatic eventration in a neonate with Fryns syndrome and cleft palate.

Diaphragmatic eventration is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by the replacement of diaphragmatic muscle with fibroelastic tissue, leading to diaphragm elevation and functional impairment. While it can occur in isolation, it is sometimes associated with congenital syndromes, including septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). This report presents a case of diaphragmatic eventration in a neonate with Fryns syndrome presenting with cleft palate and SOD, highlighting diagnostic challenges. A late preterm female neonate, born via cesarean at 36 weeks gestation, presented with respiratory distress and re

Rethinking fetal central nervous system anomalies: predicting central nervous system anomalies with corpus callosum to head circumference and occipitofrontal diameter ratios.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis of fetal central nervous system (CNS) anomalies remains challenging and is influenced by various factors, including imaging equipment quality, and access to advanced modalities such as fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In resource-limited settings, these constraints highlight the need for practical and accessible screening methods. This study aims to evaluate the predictive value of the fetal corpus callosum length-to-head circumference (CCL/HC) and corpus callosum length-to-occipitofrontal (CCL/OFD) diameter ratios in the detection of fetal central CNS abn

Prenatal Diagnosis of Apparently Isolated Absence of the Septum Pellucidum: Literature Review and Presentation of a Rare Association With 15q13.3 Microduplication.

We conducted a focused review of prenatally diagnosed apparently isolated septum pellucidum agenesis with available follow-up. Across nine series including 112 fetuses, septal optic dysplasia (SOD) was ultimately confirmed in 21 cases (18.8%), but only 43% were suspected before birth, usually on the basis of optic nerve hypoplasia, while 57% were diagnosed postnatally. Truly isolated cases generally showed favorable neurodevelopment. Our accompanying case illustrates a rare association with 15q13.3 microduplication and highlights that prenatal suspicion of SOD may also arise from endocrine-rel
