The First Grade III Lumbar Spondylolisthesis Treated With the Novel 360° Artificial Disc/Artificial Facet Replacement Solution.

BackgroundThe incidence of spondylolisthesis increases with age and is more prevalent in women. "High-grade" (above grade II) occurs in 10% to 12% of affected individuals. Patients often present with back pain as well as leg pain, numbness, paresthesias, hamstring tightness, radiculopathy, and neurogenic claudication. If conservative therapy fails , the standard of care is fusion. However, despite its effectiveness in stabilizing the spine, fusion causes biomechanical load transfer to adjacent vertebrae, which can increase the risk of adjacent segment disease and reduce range of motion. These

Dolichocolon is common in pediatric gastroenterology patients with constipation and associated complaints.

OBJECTIVES: Dolichocolon (DC), classified under International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code Q43.8 ("Other specified congenital malformations of intestine"), refers to an elongated or redundant large intestine. Recent studies in adults indicate a role for dolichocolon in constipation and disorders of gut-brain interaction. Contrast enema (CE) imaging is commonly used to identify DC, typically defined as a sigmoid colon extending above, or a transverse colon descending below, the iliac crest line. Despite its potential relevance, the prevalence and clinical significanc

Vigabatrin-associated brain magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities and clinical symptoms in infants with tuberous sclerosis complex.

OBJECTIVE: Previous retrospective studies have reported vigabatrin-associated brain abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (VABAM), although clinical impact is unknown. We evaluated the association between vigabatrin and predefined brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes in a large homogenous tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) cohort and assessed to what extent VABAM-related symptoms were reported in TSC infants. METHODS: The Dutch TSC Registry and the EPISTOP cohort provided retrospective and prospective data from 80 TSC patients treated with vigabatrin (VGB) before the age of 2 ye

Ventricular catheter tissue obstruction and shunt malfunction in 9 hydrocephalus etiologies.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocephalus is a neurological disorder with an incidence of 80-125 per 100,000 births in the United States. The most common treatment, ventricular shunting, has a failure rate of up to 85% within 10 years of placement. The authors aimed to analyze the association between ventricular catheter (VC) tissue obstructions and shunt malfunction for each hydrocephalus etiology. METHODS: Patient information was collected from 5 hospitals and entered into a REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) database by hydrocephalus etiology. The hardware samples were fixed, and each VC tip drainag

Loss-of-function mutation in DDX53 associated with hereditary spastic paraplegia-like disorder.

DEAD-box helicase 53 (DDX53) is a member of the DEAD-box protein family of RNA helicases. Unlike other family members that are responsible for RNA metabolism, the biological function of DDX53 and its impact on the human condition are unclear. Herein, we found a full-length DDX53 deletion mutation in a hereditary spastic paraplegia-like (HSP-like) patient with lower extremity spasticity, walking disorder, visual impairment, and lateral ventricular white matter lesions. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that DDX53 was mainly expressed in the cerebellar cortex and may function as a tissue-specific

The role of bone ring technique for bone augmentation in implant surgery: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Congenital deafness is commonest birth defect and it affects 2-4 neonates among 1000 live births. Detection and intervention especially before 6 months of age prevents severe linguistic, educational and psychosocial repercussions and helps the deaf child in the development of normal speech and language. Children who are identified after 6 months of age experience great difficulties in attaining speech and language.. METHODS: To find out the frequency of hearing loss in neonates, a hospital based observational study was conducted in Combined Military Hospital Abbottabad from June-t

Prenatal and perinatal risk and protective factors for psychosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal and perinatal insults are implicated in the aetiopathogenesis of psychotic disorders but the consistency and magnitude of their associations with psychosis have not been updated for nearly two decades. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of the evidence on the association between prenatal or perinatal risk and protective factors and psychotic disorders. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched the Web of Science database for articles published up to July 20, 2019. We identifie

Reductions in brain pericytes are associated with arteriovenous malformation vascular instability.

OBJECTIVEBrain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are rupture-prone tangles of blood vessels with direct shunting of blood flow between arterial and venous circulations. The molecular and/or cellular mechanisms contributing to bAVM pathogenesis and/or destabilization in sporadic lesions have remained elusive. Initial insights into AVM formation have been gained through models of genetic AVM syndromes. And while many studies have focused on endothelial cells, the contributions of other vascular cell types have yet to be systematically studied. Pericytes are multifunctional mural cells that reg

Down syndrome with posterior cortical atrophy.

Down syndrome (DS) is caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. The average age of onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) ranged from 50 to 55 years in DS, with early symptoms usually characterised by changes in behaviour and executive dysfunction. On the other hand, posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a rare neurodegenerative syndrome characterised by progressive impairment of visual functions in the absence of visual deficits and a pattern of atrophy involving posterior cortex. This syndrome is mostly caused by AD pathology. We report the case of patient with DS who developed PCA. While atypical varian

Vascular permeability and iron deposition biomarkers in longitudinal follow-up of cerebral cavernous malformations.

OBJECTIVE Vascular permeability and iron leakage are central features of cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) pathogenesis. The authors aimed to correlate prospective clinical behavior of CCM lesions with longitudinal changes in biomarkers of dynamic contrast-enhanced quantitative permeability (DCEQP) and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) assessed by MRI. METHODS Forty-six patients with CCMs underwent 2 or more permeability and/or susceptibility studies in conjunction with baseline and follow-up imaging and clinical surveillance during a mean 12.05 months of follow-up (range 2.4-31.27

Prevalence of birth defects among American-Indian births in California, 1983-2010.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 6.3 million live births and fetal deaths occurred during the ascertainment period in the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program registry. American-Indian and non-Hispanic white women delivered 40,268 and 2,044,118 births, respectively. While much information has been published about non-Hispanic white infants, little is known regarding the risks of birth defects among infants born to American-Indian women. METHODS: This study used data from the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program to explore risks of selected birth defects in offspring of American-Indian

Residential radon and birth defects: A population-based assessment.

BACKGROUND: Associations have been reported between maternal radiation exposure and birth defects. No such studies were found on radon. Our objective was to determine if there is an association between living in areas with higher radon levels and birth defects. METHODS: The Texas Birth Defects Registry provided data on all birth defects from 1999 to 2009 from the entire state. Mean radon levels by geologic region came from the Texas Indoor Radon Survey. The association between radon and birth defects was estimated using multilevel mixed effect Poisson regression. RESULTS: Birth defects overa

Delays in Motor Development in Children with Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) present with delays in motor development. The reduced size of the cerebrum, brain maturation disorders, and pathophysiological processes lead to motor development delay. The aim of this study was to examine the gross motor function and estimate what motor abilities are significantly delayed in children with Down syndrome even if they attend physical therapy sessions. Another purpose of the study was to assess the functional balance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 79 children with DS (42 boys, 37 girls), average age 6 years and 3

Infantile tauopathies: Hemimegalencephaly; tuberous sclerosis complex; focal cortical dysplasia 2; ganglioglioma.

Tau is a normal microtubule-associated protein; mutations to phosphorylated or acetylated forms are neurotoxic. In many dementias of adult life tauopathies cause neuronal degeneration. Four developmental disorders of the fetal and infant brain are presented, each of which exhibits up-regulation of tau. Microtubules are cytoskeletal structures that provide the strands of mitotic spindles and specify cellular polarity, growth, lineage, differentiation, migration and axonal transport of molecules. Phosphorylated tau is abnormal in immature as in mature neurons. Several malformations are demonstra
