OBJECTIVE: Detection of focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) remains a major challenge in presurgical epilepsy diagnostics. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) morphometry increasingly improves lesion detection and postsurgical outcomes. The volume-based Morphometric Analysis Program, version 2018 (MAP18) with integrated artificial neural network and surface-based Multi-centre Epilepsy Lesion Detection (MELD; MELD Graph) MRI morphometry algorithms have demonstrated diagnostic utility, but their performance has not been directly compared within a single cohort of surgically treated patients with histopa

BACKGROUND: Children born with a congenital anomaly have a higher risk of developing a brain tumor during childhood or adolescence, but the co-occurrence between specific types of congenital anomalies and specific types of childhood brain tumors (CBTs) is not well described. This study characterized the associations between specific congenital anomalies and CBTs.
METHODS: We leveraged a population-based registry linkage study of births (1990-2018), congenital anomalies, and cancer from 9 states (n = 22,599,099 births). Congenital anomalies were classified as major structural without a known c

OBJECTIVE: Cavernous malformations (CMs) of the optic chiasm, optic tract, and hypothalamus are exceedingly rare. Most patients present with acute or progressive visual loss, and surgery aims to maximize visual recovery while minimizing neural manipulation. We describe an updated review of all reported operated optic-pathway cavernomas to clarify surgical strategies and visual outcomes.
METHODOLOGY: PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar were searched with the terms optic pathway cavernoma, optic chiasm cavernoma, hypothalamic cavernoma, and surgical outcomes. Eighty published cases (1979 - May

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an essential gatekeeper for the central nervous system and incidence of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) is higher in infants with a history of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We discovered a rare disease trait in thirteen individuals, including four fetuses, from eight unrelated families associated with homozygous loss-of-function variant alleles of ESAM which encodes an endothelial cell adhesion molecule. The c.115del (p.Arg39Glyfs∗33) variant, identified in six individuals from four independent families of Southeastern Anatolia, severely impaired the in v

CSF1R mutations cause autosomal-dominant CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (CSF1R-ALSP) and autosomal-recessive brain abnormalities, neurodegeneration, and dysosteosclerosis (BANDDOS). The former is increasingly recognized, and disease-modifying therapy was introduced; however, literature is scarce on the latter. This review analyzes BANDDOS and discusses similarities and differences with CSF1R-ALSP.We systematically retrieved and analyzed the clinical, genetic, radiological, and pathological data on the previously reported and our cases with BANDDOS. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a rare diffuse malformation of cortical development characterized by unihemispheric hypertrophy, drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), hemiparesis, and developmental delay. Definitive treatment for HME-related DRE is hemispheric surgery through either anatomic (AH) or functional hemispherectomy (FH). This individual patient data meta-analysis assessed seizure outcomes of AH and FH for HME with pharmacoresistant epilepsy, predictors of Engel I, and efficacy of different FH approaches.

Background and Objectives: Brain arteriovenous malformations AVMs have been consistently regarded as congenital malformations of the cerebral vasculature. However, recent case reports describing "de novo AVMs" have sparked a growing debate on the nature of these lesions. Materials and Methods: We have performed a systematic review of the literature concerning de novo AVMs utilizing the PubMed and Google Academic databases. Termes used in the search were "AVM," "arteriovenous," "de novo," and "acquired," in all possible combinations. Results: 53 articles including a total of 58 patients harbori

Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause congenital microcephaly and brain abnormalities (1), and detection of Zika virus RNA in clinical and tissue specimens can provide definitive laboratory evidence of recent Zika virus infection. Whereas duration of viremia is typically short, prolonged detection of Zika virus RNA in placental, fetal, and neonatal brain tissue has been reported and can provide key diagnostic information by confirming recent Zika virus infection (2). In accordance with recent guidance (3,4), CDC provides Zika virus testing of placental and fetal tissues in clinical s

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The efficacy of cerebrospinal fluid shunting to reduce intracranial hypertension and prevent fatal brain herniation in acute cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) is unknown.
METHOD: From the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT) and a systematic literature review, we retrieved acute CVT patients treated only with shunting (external ventricular drain, ventriculoperitoneal or ventriculojugular shunt). Outcome was classified at 6 months and final follow-up by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS).
RESULTS: 15 patients were collected (9 from the IS

OBJECTIVES: Studies have demonstrated an association between congenital heart disease (CHD) and neurodevelopmental delay. Neuroimaging studies have also demonstrated a high incidence of preoperative brain abnormalities. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review to quantify the non-surgical risk of brain abnormalities and of neurodevelopmental delay in infants with CHD.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and The Cochrane Library were searched electronically without language restrictions, utilizing combinations of the terms congenital heart, cardiac, neurologic, neurodevelopment, magnetic

Mutations of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene are the genetic cause of fragile X syndrome (FXS). The presence of significant socioemotional problems has been well documented in FXS although the brain basis of those deficits remains unspecified. Here, we investigated amygdala dysfunction and its relation to socioemotional deficits and FMR1 gene expression in children and adolescents on the FX spectrum (i.e., individuals whose trinucleotide CGG repeat expansion from 55 to over 200 places them somewhere within the fragile X diagnostic range from premutation to full mutation). BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of generalized connective tissue disorders that has been described in association with epilepsy and cerebral cortical dysplasia, mostly gray matter heterotopias, in 3 reports. However, to our knowledge, association of EDS with another type of cortical cerebral dysplasia, bilateral focal polymicrogyria, has never previously been described.
SETTING: Two research-oriented hospitals.
PATIENTS: We describe 2 patients with EDS and bilateral polymicrogyria. The first, a 29-year-old black man, presented with EDS of unspecified type, s

QT prolongation, a risk factor for arrhythmia and cardiac death, is observed in uremic patients. Though hypocalcemia, autonomic nerve dysfunction and cardiac hypertrophy are assumed to cause the uremic QT prolongation, the exact mechanism remains unspecified. We therefore examined factors related to the QT interval in chronic renal failure (CRF). Corrected QT interval (QTc) was significantly prolonged in CRF just before the induction of dialysis therapy (group A) compared with nephrotic syndrome with the intact or mildly impaired renal function (group B). QTc was also prolonged in acute renal

This study of patients with functional psychoses set out to examine associations between minor physical anomalies (MPAs) and demographic, clinical, CT scan measures, and putative aetiological variables. 157 psychotic patients had minor physical anomalies assessed using a modified Waldrop scale. RDC diagnoses for these patients were: schizophrenia (n = 79), schizoaffective disorder (n = 31), mania (n = 24), major depression (n = 13), unspecified functional psychosis (n = 8), other organic psychosis (n = 2). 63 healthy white controls were also assessed with the modified Waldrop scale. This study assessed potential teratogenic properties of benzodiazepine (BZD) intake during early pregnancy. Four neonatal diagnoses of congenital malformations (embryopathy and fetopathy, unspecified; unspecified congenital malformations of the nervous system; cleft palate and cleft lip; congenital malformations of the urinary tract) were selected. The authors' previous clinical experience had shown these diagnoses to be characteristic of infants born to mothers with excessive intake of BZD in early pregnancy. The selected diagnoses were present in 25 of 10,646 liveborn infants (2.3 per 1000)

Four cases of central nervous system involvement by granulocytic sarcoma (three intracranial and one paraspinal) in children with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (FAB M1 or M2 subtype) are presented, and therapeutic modalities are discussed. All tumors were noted at initial presentation with diagnosis being made on clinical and radiological findings without biopsy. All patients had karyotypic abnormalities: three had translocation of chromosomes 8 and 21, and one had an unspecified hypodiploid clone. The three patients who developed intracranial tumors responded well to triple agent (cytosine ar
