Complex Type Split Cord Malformation: A Two-Center Study.

INTRODUCTION: Complex spinal dysraphism is the condition where multiple dysraphic pathologies are observed in the same patient. Complex type split cord malformation (SCM) is a compound dysraphic phenotype involving disruptions at multiple developmental stages, characterized by the co-occurrence of SCM and spina bifida aperta. This study aimed to understand the differences between complex SCMs from classical SCM cases in terms of embryological aspects, perioperative management, and follow-up. METHODS: Patients with SCM associated with spina bifida aperta who were treated at Dicle University an

Squamous cell carcinoma in neglected lumbar myelomeningocele successfully managed by multidisciplinary surgical reconstruction.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising within an untreated myelomeningocele (MMC) represents an exceptionally rare but devastating complication of this common neural tube defect, with only 15 cases documented in English literature prior to this report. We present the 16th documented case of SCC in a neglected lumbar MMC and provide a comprehensive critical appraisal of all 15 previously published cases to elucidate epidemiological patterns, treatment heterogeneity, and critical gaps in standardized management protocols. The current case involves a 19-year-old male with a neglected lumbosacral M

Surgical treatment and outcomes of neural tube defects at the university of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Ethiopia: a two-year retrospective review.

INTRODUCTION: Spina bifida, particularly myelomeningocele (MMC), is one of the most common congenital central nervous system abnormalities compatible with life. Despite global efforts to reduce its incidence through folic acid fortification, the burden remains high in low-resource settings like Ethiopia. This study aimed to analyze the pattern of presentation, clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of spina bifida spectrum disorders (SBSDs) at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 240 neonates a

Barriers to Cervical Cancer Screening through Pap Smear Examination among Women Attending the Gynecology Polyclinic at Dr. Zainoel Abidin General Hospital in 2024: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains the fourth most common cancer among women globally and a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Despite the availability of effective screening methods such as the Pap smear, screening uptake remains suboptimal. Barriers such as limited awareness, socioeconomic challenges, cultural beliefs, and inadequate access to healthcare services contribute to this gap. Identifying these factors is essential to inform effective interventions and reduce cervical cancer mortality. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the

Myelomeningocele in the Pediatric Neurosurgery Department at Bernard Mevs Hospital in Haiti: A Retrospective Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Birth defects occur more often in low-income and middle-income countries. This study delineates the epidemiology of myelomeningocele (MMC) patients presenting to the Bernard Mevs Hospital (HBM) in Haiti. METHODS: Pediatric patients with MMC at HBM between 2018 and 2022 were reviewed, and statistical analyses were performed. RESULTS: The study included 54 spina bifida patients with a mean age of 1.2 ± 2.4 months, predominantly male (64.8%, n = 35). The prevalence from 2018 to 2022 was approximately 0.4 cases per 10 000 live births. Half of the patients (50.0%, n = 27

Severe myelomeningocele in the fourth pregnancy of a 29-year-old woman: a case report.

Neural tube defects represent a heterogeneous and complex group of congenital abnormalities affecting the central nervous system. These defects occur during embryogenesis as a result of the failure of the neural tube to close completely. A highly clinically significant form is myelomeningocele, often referred to as open spina bifida or spina bifida aperta. Delayed diagnosis presents considerable challenges, and folate deficiency is an important risk factor. This case reports a severe myelomeningocele located in the lumbosacral region of a female neonate, identified at 28-29 weeks' gestation du

Spinal rhabdomyosarcoma in a child at the site of a lumbosacral lipoma: a rare entity.

Malignant tumours arising at the site of closed neural tube defects are extremely rare and have only been described three times in the literature. We report the case of a child with a congenital lumbosacral lipoma, a dermal sinus tract and low-lying spinal cord who was initially treated non-operatively due in part to non-attendance and who then presented at 2 years of age with recurrent urinary tract infections with intermittent pyrexia, back pain and difficulty walking. A craniospinal MRI was performed with suspicion of infection at the site of the closed neural tube defect (in view of the de

Urologic Manifestations of Uterine Leiomyomata in Women with Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To examine our experience with presentation and management of uterine leiomyomata (fibroids) in women with spina bifida (SB). Advances in health care have dramatically improved the life expectancy for individuals living with SB, but they face unique health challenges surrounding reproductive health. Uterine leiomyomata have not previously been described in this population. We hypothesize that their course is likely complicated by SB-specific disabilities and prior surgeries. METHODS: We queried our institutional database for adults with SB and a diagnosis of uterine leiomyomata and

Impact of dual procedures: How combining VP shunt placement for hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele repair in newborns affects complication rates?

To discern the efficacy of simultaneous versus delayed VPS surgery in managing hydrocephalus linked with MMC repair: The debate over the concurrent or deferred placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunts (VPS) during myelomeningocele (MMC) repair in hydrocephalic neonates necessitates a nuanced evaluation of associated risks and benefits. While VPS placement can mitigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and minimize wound dehiscence post-MMC repair, it concurrently introduces potential hazards such as infections and shunt-related malfunctions. This prospective cohort study focused on144 newborns w

Thoracolumbar myelocele repair: how I do it.

BACKGROUND: Myelocele is a rare form of open spina bifida. Surgical repair is recommended prenatally or in the first 48 h. In some cases, the repair may be delayed, and specific surgical factors need to be considered. METHOD: We give a brief overview of the surgical anatomy, followed by a description of the surgical repair of a thoracolumbar Myelocele in an 11-month-old child. CONCLUSION: Surgical repair of the Myelocele stabilizes the neurological status, prevents local and central nervous system infections. The understanding of Myelocele anatomy enables its removal while preserving as much

Association of maternal ABO blood type with lesion level and birthweight of children with spina bifida: a descriptive study.

The etiology of spina bifida, a neural tube birth defect, is largely unknown, but a majority of cases are thought to be genetic in origin. Although maternal blood type was found not to be associated with the occurrence of spina bifida, the analysis was never extended to other aspects of the disorder. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine if maternal blood type was related to characteristics of children with spina bifida. The blood type of 221 mothers of children with spina bifida enrolled on the Arkansas Spinal Cord Disability Registry from 1995 to 2008 was obtained by mailed

Intrauterine Correction of Fetal Myelomeningocele Through Minihysterotomy.

Spina bifida is the most common congenital central nervous system anomaly, resulting in lifelong neurologic, urinary, motor, and bowel disability.1 Its most frequent form is myelomeningocele, characterized by spinal cord extrusion into a sac filled with cerebrospinal fluid.1 We report the case of a 28-year-old pregnant female with no comorbidities. At 16 weeks of pregnancy, fetal ultrasound presented ventriculomegaly, cerebellar herniation, and lumbar myelomeningocele. At 22 weeks, intrauterine surgical correction was performed (Video 1). A minihysterotomy spanning approximately 3 cm was perfo

Case report: double dermal sinus tracts of the cervical and thoracic spine associated with congenital intracranial pathology (hydrocephalus and an interhemispheric cyst) in a newborn patient.

INTRODUCTION: A dermal sinus tract (DST) is an uncommon type of spinal dysraphisms characterized by a tract lined with stratified squamous epithelium that extends from the subcutaneous tissue to the underlying thecal sac or neural tube. These developmental anomalies can present asymptomatically with cutaneous abnormalities or with devastating complications. Usually, it is presented as a unique lesion, and there are only a few reports that show multiple sinuses, and none of them associated with midline brain malformations. METHODS: We present the case of a 3-day-old girl with an antenatal diag

Quality of life in a 61-year-old paraplegic patient with myelomeningocele: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on survival of patients with myelomeningocele (MM) into late adulthood. Patients born prior to 1975 received less surgical treatment and demonstrated poorer survival. Patients born after 1975 show lower mortality rates because of advancements in prenatal care, diagnostics, technology, and treatment. The increasing number of adult patients with MM demonstrates these successes but also highlights the need for a better understanding of both medical management and quality-of-life issues in this population. OBSERVATIONS: A 61-year-old woman presented to the hospital
