Symptomatic cervical lipomyelomeningocele in an adult: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Cervical lipomyelomeningocele (LMMC) is an exceedingly rare form of spina bifida occulta. Cervical LMMC presenting in adulthood, particularly in the 4th decade, as cervical tethered cord syndrome is extremely uncommon. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a woman in her early 40s who presented with clinical features of cervical compressive myelopathy. Neuroradiological evaluation showed cervical LMMC extending from C3 to C6, along with significant compression and flattening of the spinal cord. The patient underwent C3-6 laminectomy and excision of the lipomatous tissue, al

Caudal duplication syndrome with giant sacral lipomeningomyelocele and tethered cord: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Caudal duplication syndrome (CDS) is a rare congenital condition involving duplication of gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and distal spinal structures that originate from the cloaca. Lipomeningomyelocele (LMMC) with tethered cord represents an uncommon but surgically relevant manifestation within this heterogeneous spectrum. CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old girl with CDS and persistent cloaca was referred for neurosurgical evaluation of a giant sacral LMMC and a low-lying conus medullaris consistent with tethered cord. Although neurologically intact at presentation, spinal magneti

Development and feasibility of a metaverse-based program for health care transition and quality of life in adolescents with spina bifida: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with spina bifida (SB) often face difficulties in developing self-management skills and forming social relationships, both essential for successful healthcare transition. The metaverse, offering psychological safety through avatar-based interactions, presents a promising approach to address these developmental challenges. This pilot study aimed to develop and evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a metaverse-based program designed to support healthcare transition and improve quality of life in adolescents with SB. METHODS: Following intervention development and

Neighborhood Characteristics, Ambulation Ability, and Social Vulnerability of Individuals with Spina Bifida.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the characteristics of neighborhoods where people with Spina Bifida (SB) live, driving distances, and the relationship of those factors to ambulatory ability. DESIGN: Data from patients attending an adult and pediatric SB clinic in the National Spina Bifida Patient Registry were matched to the 2022 CDC/ATSDR Social Vulnerability Index using patient zip codes. A multinomial logistic regression was used to predict ambulation ability, and Spearman's Rho correlations were used to assess the relationship between driving distance to clinic, nearest physical therapist

Prevalence of epilepsy and structural brain anomalies in spina bifida aperta.

INTRODUCTION: Spina bifida aperta (SBA) is frequently associated with a wide range of structural anomalies in the brain, some of these thought to be related to epilepsy. However, the relationship between these is poorly studied. This study aims to assess the prevalence of brain anomalies and epilepsy in SBA patients and explore the nature and magnitude of their association. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional cohort study including all consecutive postnatally treated SBA patients, managed at Erasmus MC Sophia Children's Hospital, Rotterdam from January 1st 2000 up to June 1s

The latex allergy dogma in spina bifida - how generalisable is the evidence? A cross-sectional study from Southern India challenging Western benchmarks.

PURPOSE: Children with spinal dysraphism (SD), and particularly those with open spinal dysraphism (OSD; myelomeningocele/myeloschisis), have historically been classified as a uniquely high-risk population for latex allergy, with most published evidence derived from Western cohorts reporting prevalence rates of 26-70%. Data from low- and middle-income settings remain scarce. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of latex sensitisation and clinical latex allergy in children with SD at a tertiary care centre in southern India and to identify associated risk factors. METHODS: In this cross

A standardised risk-stratified approach to the urological management of children with spina bifida.

BACKGROUND: The establishment of a multidisciplinary spina bifida (SB) clinic in 2006 resulted in a review of the literature and an audit of renal outcomes based on then management practices. The audit showed 17% new onset renal scarring over a mean 5.8-year follow-up period. This prompted the development of a local protocol based on risk stratification combining serial ultrasound and non-invasive bladder function assessments, with invasive urodynamic studies reserved for high-risk patients. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to assess the impact of a risk stratified protocol on renal scarring and

"Why children with anorectal malformations need urological evaluation: Insights from a retrospective study".

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, patients with high anorectal malformations (ARM) are considered to have a worse associated urological functional prognosis and are actively managed in pediatric urology units. However, the evidence supporting this risk-based stratification remains limited. This study aimed to determine whether the height of the malformation or the presence of associated anomalies influences the risk of lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) in a large cohort of children with ARM, in order to assess the need for systematic urological surveillance. MATERIALS AND METHOD

The association of daily urinary and bowel incontinence with emotional functioning in young adults with spina bifida: an ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Urinary and bowel incontinence are common in young adults with spina bifida and may affect emotional functioning and health-related quality of life. Prospective data describing day-level incontinence experiences in this population are limited. This study used ecological momentary assessment to characterize daily variability in urinary and bowel incontinence and to examine associations with mood, incontinence-related anxiety, and health-related quality of life. METHODS: In a 30-day ecological momentary assessment study of adults with spina bifida and recent incontinence, young adult

Dorsal midline ectopic mammary tissue as a cutaneous marker of spinal dysraphism: intradural lipoma and tethered cord in a child with literature review.

PURPOSE: Supernumerary breasts (polymastia) and supernumerary nipples (polythelia) are congenital anomalies resulting from incomplete regression of the embryonic mammary ridge. They most frequently occur along the embryologic milk line extending from the axilla to the groin. Ectopic localization outside this line is rare, and dorsal presentations are exceptional. In such cases, an association with underlying spinal dysraphism has occasionally been reported. METHODS: We report the case of an 11-year-old girl presenting with a congenital dorsal midline swelling initially diagnosed as a lipoma.

Incidental nondysraphic cervical intradural extramedullary lipoma at C1-C2: CT and MRI findings.

Intradural lipomas are rare benign tumors, accounting for less than 1% of all spinal tumors. Their exact physiopathology is not fully understood. There are many theories that share some basic aspects. Cervical intradural lipomas not associated with dysraphism are even rarer. We report the case of an incidental finding of a nondysraphic cervical intradural lipoma in a 17-year-old male patient initially admitted for polytrauma management. Whole-body trauma CT revealed a well-circumscribed intradural extramedullary fat-density lesion within the left dorsolateral spinal canal at the C1-C2 level, d

Low Conus Position on Fetal MRI with Postnatal Correlation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Abnormal low position of the conus medullaris on fetal MRI may portend tethered cord syndrome after birth. However, prenatal identification of low conus is challenging and frequently requires postnatal confirmation. This study aimed to compare two methods for evaluating conus position on fetal MRI by correlating with postnatal outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of fetal MRIs performed between 2011-2022 that reported low conus in the absence of other spinal dysraphism and had available postnatal follow-up. Each case was re-classified a

Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane bulging preceding hindbrain herniation in open spinal dysraphism: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hindbrain herniation (HBH) is a feature of Chiari II malformation in fetuses with open spinal dysraphism (OSD) and constitutes an eligibility criterion for prenatal repair in many fetal surgery protocols. Bulging of the posterior atlanto-occipital membrane (PAOM) is frequently observed in association with vermian descent; however, its significance in the absence of HBH remains unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: We report two fetuses with OSD who initially showed no HBH on fetal MRI but presented with isolated CSF-filled PAOM bulging. In both cases, repeat MRI within two weeks demonstra

Intradural posterior bony spur causing tethered cord syndrome without split cord malformation: A rare caudal developmental variant.

BACKGROUND: Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is most commonly associated with congenital spinal dysraphism, thickened filum terminale, lipomas, or split cord malformations (SCM ). Bony causes of tethering are typically described in association with diastematomyelia. Isolated intradural bony spurs without cord splitting or extradural communication are exceptionally rare. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a young adult female presenting with long-standing progressive lower limb sensory disturbances, gait tightness, and urinary dysfunction. A delayed neurological diagnosis resulted in multiple orthopedic
