Split cord malformation in adults: Literature review and classification.

The objective of this study was to summarize the available literature describing the presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and management for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 split spinal cord malformations. A review of the literature was performed using the CINAHL, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science database, alongside all associated bibliographies, to include studies describing Type 1 and Type 2 split cord malformations diagnosed in patients above the age of 18. All relevant studies of split cord malformations were included, regardless of the year published and terminology used to describe the d

Dermal Sinus Tract associated with Type I and Type II Split Cord Malformation.

The dermal sinus tract of the spine is associated with other occult spinal dysraphisms, such as the split cord malformation (diastematomyelia) in a 40% of the cases and embryologically is not clearly defined if the dermal sinus and split cord malformation have origin in gastrulation or late primary neurulation, but the most accepted theory of the dermal sinus tract consists in early incomplete disjunction, which explains the relation with other spinal dysraphisms. Here, we present two cases, with a dermal sinus tract of the spine associated with Type I and Type II split cord malformation.

Psychosocial outcomes for adults with spina bifida: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scoping review is to explore the evidence on psychosocial needs and related outcomes for adults with spina bifida. INTRODUCTION: Individuals with spinal bifida have complex service needs that can lead to the emergence of secondary conditions and health complications, which can result in serious, life-threatening illnesses. While much is known about the biological impact of spina bifida, there is a dearth of information regarding its psychological and social impact. INCLUSION CRITERIA: This scoping review will include adults (18 years and over) with the follow

[Diastematomyelia discovered in adulthood].

We report a case of a 35-year-old woman with recurrent lumbar pain and left cruralgia in a post-traumatic context, for which the scanner had made possible the fortuitous diagnostic of a congenital anomaly. The diagnosis of diastematomyelia, which is more frequent in utero, is rare in adulthood and results from the implementation of an iconographic assessment. We will present the major malformations that are associated with diastematomyelia and which could evoke the presence of this malformation. The management of the anomaly is still controversial and can lead, if not done properly, to invalid

Incidence of intraspinal abnormalities in congenital scoliosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis on the overall incidence of intraspinal abnormalities in patients with congenital scoliosis (CS) and potential influencing factors. METHODS: We searched three large electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library) for potentially relevant studies. The quality of the included studies was assessed independently by two authors using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS) criteria. Data on the number of CS patients, number of CS patients with intraspinal abnormalities, sex of the patients, and CS typ

Pediatric pathology all grown up - An interesting case of adult tethered spinal cord.

BACKGROUND: Cervical myelopathy in an adult is typically the result of degenerative disease or trauma. Dysraphism is rarely the cause. CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors report the case of a 35-year-old male drywall installer who presented with 2 years of progressive left upper extremity weakness, numbness, and hand clumsiness. Only upon detailed questioning did he mention that he had neck surgery just after birth, but he did not know what was done. He then also reported that he routinely shaved a patch of lower back hair, but denied bowel, bladder, or lower extremity dysfunction. Magnetic resonan

Split cord malformation and tethered cord syndrome: case series with long-term follow-up and literature review.

PURPOSE: To date, the description of the natural course of concurrent tethered cord syndrome with a low-lying conus medullaris and split cord malformation is lacking in the literature. We report a cohort of adult and pediatric patients with concurrent malformations and long-term follow-up. METHODS: Patients with concurrent diagnoses of split cord malformation and tethered cord (radiographic evidence supporting clinical symptomatology) were identified between 2000 and 2020. Patients without sufficient documentation or at least 6-month follow-up were excluded. RESULTS: Nine patients were ident

Uncrossed corticospinal tracts in a patient with ichthyosis and hemiparesis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Anomalies of pyramidal tract decussation are rare phenomena that can be caused by ectodermal dysplasia. Herein, we describe a patient with ichthyosis who exhibited ipsilateral hemiparesis after stroke and whose neuroimaging results showed evidence of motor control being provided by the ipsilateral motor cortex. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old right-handed man presented with skin abnormalities, sudden-onset left hemiparesis, and dysarthria. He exhibited a mild-to-moderate left-sided weakness (grade 4 on the Medical Research Council scale). Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an ac

Neurocutaneous melanocytosis (melanosis).

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM; MIM # 249400; ORPHA: 2481], first reported by the Bohemian pathologist Rokitansky in 1861, and now more precisely defined as neurocutaneous melanocytosis, is a rare, congenital syndrome characterised by the association of (1) congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) of the skin with overlying hypertrichosis, presenting as (a) large (LCMN) or giant and/or multiple (MCMN) melanocytic lesions (or both; sometimes associated with smaller "satellite" nevi) or (b) as proliferative melanocytic nodules; and (2) melanocytosis (with infiltration) of the brain parenchyma and/or lep

Constrictive myelopathy secondary to caudal articular vertebral process dysplasia in West Highland white terrier dogs.

Clinical signs, imaging findings and long-term follow-up of 3 West Highland white terrier dogs with constrictive myelopathy secondary to caudal articular vertebral process dysplasia are described. Clinical signs were consistent with an acute or chronic T3-L3 myelopathy in all dogs. Diagnostic imaging revealed hypoplasia or aplasia of the caudal articular vertebral processes, extradural compressive myelographic pattern (hourglass-like pattern) with a reduced diameter of the spinal cord, and focal thickening of extradural soft tissues. Medical treatment initially improved the clinical signs in 2

Morquio B Disease. Disease Characteristics and Treatment Options of a Distinct GLB1-Related Dysostosis Multiplex.

Morquio B disease (MBD) is an autosomal recessive GLB1-gene-related lysosomal storage disease, presenting with a peculiar type of dysostosis multiplex which is also observed in GALNS-related Morquio A disease. MBD may present as pure skeletal phenotype (pure MBD) or in combination with the neuronopathic manifestations seen in type 2 (juvenile) or type 3 (late onset) GM1 gangliosidosis (MBD plus). The main skeletal features are progressive growth impairment, kyphoscoliosis, coxa/genua valga, joint laxity, platyspondyly and odontoid hypoplasia. The main neuronopathic features are dystonia, ataxi

Postembryonic screen for mutations affecting spine development in zebrafish.

The spine gives structural support for the adult body, protects the spinal cord, and provides muscle attachment for moving through the environment. The development and maturation of the spine and its physiology involve the integration of multiple musculoskeletal tissues including bone, cartilage, and fibrocartilaginous joints, as well as innervation and control by the nervous system. One of the most common disorders of the spine in human is adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), which is characterized by the onset of an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine of <10° around adolescence, in oth

Syringomyelia in Patient with Concurrent Posttraumatic Hydrocephalus and Tethered Spinal Cord: Implications for Surgical Management.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic syringomyelia is a significant source of disability following spinal cord injury (SCI). Despite this, its etiology and optimal treatment remain controversial. Early identification of and intervention at a presyrinx state may halt progression. Here, we present a unique case illustrating the continuum between presyrinx and syrinx in an adult following severe distraction cervical SCI and traumatic brain injury, resulting in both tethered spinal cord and posttraumatic hydrocephalus and subsequent isolated fourth ventricle. The interplay between these etiologic factors and

Correlation of hydromyelia with subarachnoid hemorrhage-related hydrocephalus: an experimental study.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Although the central canal is an integral component of the cerebral ventricular system, central canal dilation has not been examined adequately during the progression of subarachnoid hemorrhage-related hydrocephalus (SAH-H). Central canal dilation-associated ependymal cell desquamation or subependymal membrane rupture has been rarely reported. Herein, we try to describe possible mechanisms of central canal dilation "Hydromyelia," developing after SAH. A total of 25 New Zealand hybrid female rabbits were recruited. Five served as controls, and five received sham operations. In the remaining ani
