Thoracolumbar myelopathies in pug dogs.

BACKGROUND: Constrictive myelopathy (CM) involving a fibrous band around the spinal cord is a newly recognized disease in pug dogs. OBJECTIVES: To identify the frequency of CM based on diagnostic imaging supplemented with necropsy; to determine whether a relationship exists between the sites of CM and other described T3-L3 myelopathies; and to determine the frequency of caudal articular process dysplasia (CAPD). ANIMALS: Thirty-two client-owned pug dogs diagnosed with a chronic, progressive T3-L3 myelopathy based on neurological examination performed by a board-certified neurologist. METHOD

Investigation of canine caudal articular process dysplasia of thoracic vertebrae using computed tomography: Prevalence and characteristics.

Caudal articular process (CAP) dysplasia is a congenital vertebral malformation that results from the failure of ossification center of articular process located in vertebrae, which includes aplasia or hypoplasia. In previous studies, it was reported to be common in small and chondrodystrophic dogs however, investigated in limited breeds. So we aimed to confirm the prevalence and the characteristics of CAP dysplasia in various breeds, and also to investigate the association of CAP dysplasia and spinal cord myelopathy in neurologically abnormal dogs. In this multicenter, retrospective study, th

Application of data harmonization and tract-based spatial statistics reveals white matter structural abnormalities in pediatric patients with focal cortical dysplasia.

Our study assessed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metrics of fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), and radial diffusivity (RD) in pediatric subjects with epilepsy secondary to Focal Cortical Dysplasia (FCD) to improve our understanding of structural network changes associated with FCD related epilepsy. We utilized a data harmonization (DH) approach to minimize confounding effects induced by MRI protocol differences. We also assessed correlations between DTI metrics and neurocognitive measures of the fluid reasoning index (FRI), verbal comprehension index (VCI), and visuospatial in

Unexpected findings in cervical spine in spondylometaphyseal dysplasia Sutcliff type FN1-related.

The autosomal dominant spondylometaphyseal dysplasia Sutcliff type or corner fracture type FN1-related is characterized by a combination of metaphyseal irregularities simulating fractures ("corner fractures"), developmental coxa vara, and vertebral changes. It is linked to heterozygous mutations in FN1 and COL2A1. Vertebral changes as delayed vertebral ossification, ovoid vertebral bodies, anterior vertebral wedging, and platyspondyly have been observed in this condition, while odontoid abnormalities have not been reported. We report an odontoid anomaly in a girl with SMD-CF FN1-related showin

Cervical corpectomy in a pediatric patient with chondrodysplasia punctata and C5 dysplasia with spinal cord compression: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Chondrodysplasia punctata (CDP) describes skeletal dysplasia secondary to a variety of genetic underpinnings characterized by cartilaginous stippling from abnormal calcium deposition during endochondral bone formation. Approximately 20%-38% of patients with CDP have cervical spine abnormalities, resulting in stenosis and cord compression. However, approaches to management differ among patients. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present an 18-year-old male with a known history of CDP and cervical kyphosis with worsening paresthesias and increased spasticity. Imaging confirmed dysplastic C4

Analysis of characteristic features in ultrasound diagnosis of fetal limb body wall complex during 11-13+6 weeks.

BACKGROUND: Limb body wall complex (LBWC) is a fatal malformation characterized by major defects in the fetal abdominal or thoracic wall, visceral herniation, significant scoliosis or spina bifida, limb deformities, craniofacial deformities, and umbilical cord abnormalities (short or absent umbilical cord). Early diagnosis of this condition is of great clinical significance for clinical intervention and pregnancy decision-making. With the rapid development of fetal ultrasound medicine, early pregnancy (11-13+6 wk) standardized prenatal ultrasound examinations have been widely promoted and appl

The phenotypic spectrum of terminal 6q deletions based on a large cohort derived from social media and literature: a prominent role for DLL1.

BACKGROUND: Terminal 6q deletions are rare, and the number of well-defined published cases is limited. Since parents of children with these aberrations often search the internet and unite via international social media platforms, these dedicated platforms may hold valuable knowledge about additional cases. The Chromosome 6 Project is a collaboration between researchers and clinicians at the University Medical Center Groningen and members of a Chromosome 6 support group on Facebook. The aim of the project is to improve the surveillance of patients with chromosome 6 aberrations and the support f

Substantial incidence of bladder dysfunction in patients with VACTERL association: Implications for surveillance.

VACTERL association is defined as the nonrandom co-occurrence of a minimum of three of the following six key components: Vertebral anomalies, Anal atresia, Cardiac malformations, Tracheo-Esophageal fistula, Renal anomalies, and Limb abnormalities. Patients presenting with two components may also belong in the same spectrum. Additional components have been associated with VACTERL defects, including single umbilical artery, tethered spinal cord (TSC), and genital malformations. We observed a significant proportion of patients with bladder dysfunction (often called neurogenic bladder in the medic

Incomplete spinal cord injury following minor trauma in two siblings with spondylocostal dysostis type 6.

Biallelic pathogenic variants of the RIPPLY2 gene have been recognized to cause a subtype of autosomal recessive spondylocostal dysostosis (SCDO6), characterized by predominant cervical spine malformation with minor or absent involvement of the ribs. To date, RIPPLY2 associated SCDO6 has been described in ten patients in five studies with accompanying clinical symptoms varying from transient and recurrent torticollis to flaccid quadriplegia. Here, we describe two additional patients in one family in which the c.A238T:p.Arg80* RIPPLY2 mutation in the homozygous state, was associated with severe

Imaging characteristics of temporopolar blurring in the context of hippocampal sclerosis.

We present an illustrative case to address anterior temporal lobe atrophy with poor delineation of the temporopolar gray-white matter interface based on T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy associated with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS). A 52-year-old woman with pharmacoresistant seizures since the age of six months underwent a previous MRI scan using a suboptimal protocol which was reported as unremarkable. MRI performed according to an epilepsy protocol showed classic signs of left HS and ipsilateral temporal polar atrophy

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in 50 Captive Non-domestic Felids - Technique and Imaging Diagnoses.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the recognized gold standard for diagnostic imaging of the central nervous system in human and veterinary patients. Information on the use of this modality and possible imaging abnormalities in captive non-domestic felids is currently limited to individual case reports or small case series. This retrospective study provides information on technique and imaging findings in a cohort of cases undergoing MRI at an academic Veterinary Medical Center. The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine MRI database was searched for non-domestic felids under

Recessive PRDM13 mutations cause fatal perinatal brainstem dysfunction with cerebellar hypoplasia and disrupt Purkinje cell differentiation.

Pontocerebellar hypoplasias (PCHs) are congenital disorders characterized by hypoplasia or early atrophy of the cerebellum and brainstem, leading to a very limited motor and cognitive development. Although over 20 genes have been shown to be mutated in PCHs, a large proportion of affected individuals remains undiagnosed. We describe four families with children presenting with severe neonatal brainstem dysfunction and pronounced deficits in cognitive and motor development associated with four different bi-allelic mutations in PRDM13, including homozygous truncating variants in the most severely

How did intraoperative neuromonitorization prevent tetraplegia?

Patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA) have many risk factors for myelopathy and paresis. These are spinal cord compression, bone stenosis, and soft tissue thickening with ligament laxity, deformity, odontoid hypoplasia, and atlantoaxial instability. Although most patients with MPS IVA appear generally healthy at birth, patients often show skeletal deformities within a few years. Surgical indications are difficult to determine. Historically, many physicians have used prophylactic decompression and fusion in young, asymptomatic MPS IVA patients to prevent cord compression. Altho

Loss of PIGK function causes severe infantile encephalopathy and extensive neuronal apoptosis.

PIGK gene, encoding a key component of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) transamidase, was recently reported to be associated with inherited GPI deficiency disorders (IGDs). However, little is known about the specific downstream effects of PIGK on neurodevelopment due to the rarity of the disease and the lack of in vivo study. Here, we described 2 patients in a Chinese family presented with profound global developmental delay, severe hypotonia, seizures, and postnatal progressive global brain atrophy including hemisphere, cerebellar and corpus callosum atrophy. Two novel compound heterozygous

Enzyme replacement therapy interruption in mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA patients and its impact in different clinical outcomes.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA (MPS IVA) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the GALNS gene, which leads to deficient activity of N-acetylglucosamine-6-sulfate sulfatase. MPS IVA patients usually present skeletal dysplasia, coarse features, short stature, airway obstruction, cervical spinal cord compression, dental abnormalities, and cardiac valvular alterations. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with elosulfase alfa is the only disease-specific treatment available for MPS IVA patients and has been shown to improve important clinical and biochemical param
