The lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LTV) is an abnormally formed vertebra that can be associated with cauda equina syndrome, lumbosacral (LS) degeneration, and pelvic rotation. However, there is little information on LTV in small-breed dogs, and no studies have investigated the association between LTV and LS diseases or degenerative changes in the coxofemoral joints. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, and cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of LTV in small-breed dogs (<10 kg), classify the type of LTV, and identify its association with degenerative changes in

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Caudal agenesis (CA) is a congenital disease characterized by lower vertebral bone defects. Previous classifications for CA were based on the levels of bony defects or the conus medullaris. We created a new pathoembryogenic classification that takes into account the level of conus, considering both its shape and filum. We evaluated its accuracy in reflecting the neurological status and the need for untethering.
METHODS: Patients with radiologic studies available on our institute's electronic image view system between 1985 and 2019 were reviewed. Our classification c

Intraspinal enterogenous cysts are rare congenital abnormalities that mainly develop in the spinal canal, more commonly in the cervical and thoracic regions, and rarely in the lumbar spine. We present a case of neurenteric (NE) cyst in the conus medullaris and cauda equina junction at the level of L1 in a patient presenting with a nine-year history of progressive lower limb weakness, paresthesia, and muscle wasting. The patient underwent complete resection of the cyst and had no postoperative complications with marked improvement of paresthesia and some localized pain in the lower back managea

Two boxer dogs from the same litter were presented at 3 months of age for urinary and fecal incontinence. Both dogs had an abnormal tail consisting of a small stump, an atonic anal sphincter, and absent perineal reflex and sensation. Neurological evaluation was indicative of a lesion of the cauda equina or sacral spinal cord. Radiology and CT scan of the spine displayed similar findings in the two dogs that were indicative of sacral agenesis. Indeed, they had 6 lumbar vertebrae followed by a lumbosacral transitional vertebra, lacking a complete spinous process, and a hypoplastic vertebra carry

Lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LTV) are abnormally formed vertebrae of congenital origin. Dogs with LTV are predisposed to premature degeneration of the lumbosacral spine and hip dysplasia due to a weakened sacroiliac attachment. Moreover, LTV has been discussed as a cause of cauda equina syndrome. To date, LTV remain poorly understood and a diagnostic standard is yet to be established. This study examines prevalence, types and breed predispositions for LTV in the canine population in Berlin. The diagnostic value of laterolateral radiographs of the lumbosacral region, in addition to ventr

PURPOSE: Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) usually presents with low-lying conus medullaris and thickened filum terminale. Spinal cord anomalies usually accompany congenital malformations and variations of the vertebral column. Transitional vertebrae (TV) are common variant, especially in the lumbosacral region. Accurate definition of the spine level is essential for proper radiological diagnosis and treatment. In this study, congenital spinal cord and vertebral anomalies and the relation with TV groups and types were evaluated in TCS patients.
METHODS: The study was performed in 97 patients. Radi

PURPOSE: Spine ultrasound (US) examinations are widely performed in neonates and infants with sacral dimple to exclude associated congenital malformations. Increased utilization of, and improvements in, sonographic technology has resulted in the frequent identification of echogenic filum terminale (FT) containing fat below the conus medullaris, termed FT lipoma or fatty FT. We examined the value of screening US, especially for diagnosis of FT lipoma, in infants with "simple sacral dimple."
METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of spinal US and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical and radiological outcomes of growing rod (GR) in the management of Early Onset Scoliosis (EOS) with intraspinal anomalies.
BACKGROUND DATA: The effect of repeated distractions following GR, in the presence of intraspinal anomalies has not been studied.
METHODS: During 2007-2012, 46 patients underwent fusionless surgery. Out of these 46 patients, 13 patients had one or more intraspinal anomalies. 11 patients had undergone prior neurosurgical procedure while 2 (filum terminale lipoma and syringomyelia) did not. A total of 88 procedures were conducted during the

UNLABELLED: OBJECT.: Sacrococcygeal dimples in the gluteal fold, also known as coccygeal pits, are observed in 2%-4% of newborns. Sacrococcygeal dimples are not generally considered to be associated with a significant risk of intraspinal anomalies and therefore are not thought to require further radiographic evaluation. Accordingly, the precise incidence and nature of intraspinal lesions that may be associated with sacrococcygeal dimples is unclear. This study was conducted to determine the incidence of intraspinal lesions in patients with intergluteal dimples.
METHODS: In this study, the aut

AIM: Split cord malformations (SCMs) are rare congenital anomalies of the vertebrae and the spinal cord. Tethered cord syndrome (TCS) is a clinical condition of various origins that arises from tension on the spinal cord. Radiographic findings may include and/or associate split cord malformations and the other neural tube defects. However, the spinal cord can even be tethered by a filum terminale with normal appearance and normal level conus medullaris in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The aim of our study is to show whether SMC patients with normal or abnormal MRI findings had all histolog

Congenital malformations represent approximately 3 in 100 live births within the human population. Understanding their pathogenesis and ultimately formulating effective treatments are underpinned by knowledge of the events and factors that regulate normal embryonic development. Studies in model organisms, primarily in the mouse, the most prominent genetically tractable mammalian model, have equipped us with a rudimentary understanding of mammalian development from early lineage commitment to morphogenetic processes. In this way, information provided by studies in the mouse can, in some cases,

OBJECTIVE: Tight filum syndrome (TFS) is caused by a thick (abnormal T1 MRI), shortened (low-lying conus), or non-elastic filum (strictly normal MRI). We carefully analyzed children treated for suspect TFS with or without radiological abnormalities.
METHODS: Twenty-five children, operated between 2002 and 2009, were retrospectively identified. All children had been evaluated by a multidisciplinary team preoperatively. Symptoms, signs and diagnostic test results were categorized (neurologic, urologic, orthopedic, dermatologic) and compared pre- and one year postoperatively. Normal MR was defin

Myelomeningocele is a congenital defect in vertebral arches with cystic dilatation of meninges and structural or functional abnormality of spinal cord or cauda equina. It is a form of spinal dysraphisam with overlying skin defect (spina bifida aperta). That condition is related to other clinical complications such as infection that can produce furthermore complications. To prevent rate of complications surgical treatment in first 24 h is strongly suggested. In this case report we describe a patient (infant) with congenital myelomeningocele who's defect was treated surgically by the neurosurgeo

Spinal dysraphisms are categorized in open dysraphisms with prominent abnormal nervous tissue above the skinlevel and closed dysraphisms with a skin covered malformation. Especially the occult dysraphisms are marked by suspect skin masses and other dermal anomalies. The purpose of this review is to demonstrate the indications and spectrum of spinal sonography in neonates and infants. In comparison typical dysraphisms are demonstrated in sonography and MR Imaging. We demonstrate the value of ultrasound in comparison to MRI and describe a usefull handling of the methods in neonates and infants.

Lesions composed of Pacinian corpuscles or showing Pacinian corpuscle differentiation have usually been described in relation to benign tumours of the peripheral nervous system or reactive hyperplastic processes. On the other hand, mature Pacinian corpuscles have occasionally been detected as part of intraspinal lumbosacral lipomas, a rare developmental anomaly usually associated with spina bifida. A lesion of the cauda equina composed of numerous mature Pacinian corpuscles and nerve fascicles embedded in adipose tissue in association with spina bifida occulta is described in a 5-month-old mal

INTRODUCTION: Pygopagus conjoined twins are joined at the rump and have union of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary systems as well occasional involvement of neural elements.
CASE REPORT: We report a case where the terminal spinal cords were fused, despite which there was only a minor motor deficit in the lower limbs after separation. The pre-operative and intra-operative findings are described and issues of long-term follow-up discussed.
DISCUSSION: Seven other cases reported in the literature with varying degrees of involvement of the spinal cord and cauda equina are reviewed.

The authors present a patient with diastematomyelia and associated congenital malformations of the spinal cord. They caused tethering of the spinal cord. Patient had cutaneous marks of malformation from birth. The congenital malformation was operated at the age 5 years. MRI and surgical findings confirm the existence of diastematomyelia together with thick tethered filum terminale and lipoma of filum terminale. On surgery the bony septum was removed, the filum terminale was resected and the lipoma was excised. Each of the anomalies caused the tethering of the spinal cord and restricted its phy

Spinal arachnoid cysts are a relatively uncommon lesion that may be either intra- or extradural, and intradural spinal arachnoid cysts are even less common. These cysts are usually asymptomatic but may produce symptoms by compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots suddenly or progressively. We present three cases in the pediatric age group with spinal intradural arachnoid cysts without a preceding history of trauma. Three patients with symptomatic intradural arachnoid cysts were investigated with conventional T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The MRI scans demonstrated the

Caudal duplication is a rare entity due to incomplete separation of mono-ovular twins. It is usually associated with various congenital malformations involving mainly the genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts. We report such a case operated upon successfully in which there was no other associated anomaly.
