Rare Case of Multifocal Spinal Hemangioblastomas With Holocord Syringo-Hydromyelia in an Adolescent Male.

Hemangioblastomas are benign, highly vascular tumors of the central nervous system. Although they most commonly arise in the cerebellum, they may also involve the brainstem and spinal cord. The presence of multiple spinal hemangioblastomas is frequently associated with von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome; however, sporadic cases without an underlying genetic syndrome can occur. Characteristic imaging features include avid post-contrast enhancement, associated syrinx formation, and intratumoral or peritumoral flow voids. Spinal hemangioblastomas account for a small proportion of intramedullary spi

Foramen Magnum Decompression for Retro-Odontoid Pseudotumor in an Elderly Patient With Chiari Malformation Type I: A Case Report.

Chiari malformation type I (CM-I) is uncommon in elderly patients, and surgical experience in this population remains limited. Long-term outcomes after surgery, particularly following prolonged conservative observation, have rarely been reported. We present an 82-year-old woman with CM-I who developed neurological deterioration due to a retro-odontoid pseudotumor (ROP) after two decades of clinical stability. Foramen magnum decompression (FMD) was performed without postoperative complications, resulting in marked neurological improvement. She was discharged, and long-term follow-up demonstrate

Orthopedic manifestations as presenting symptoms in children with neuroblastoma: a retrospective case series and clinical review.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroblastoma is the second most common childhood malignancy. Only a minority of children with metastatic disease present initially to orthopedic surgeons, despite musculoskeletal complaints such as back pain, limb pain, limp, extremity swelling, or findings mimicking osteomyelitis. These vague and nonspecific presentations increase the risk of delayed diagnosis. AIMS: To study orthopedic manifestations that present as the initial presenting symptoms of neuroblastoma in children and to characterize their clinical, radiological, and laboratory profiles. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fo

Partially calcified giant hemorrhagic syringomyelia and hematomyelia.

Syringomyelia is a rare condition characterized by the formation of a fluid-filled cyst within the spinal cord, leading to myelopathy. In addition, the pathological enlargement of the central canal is referred to as hydromyelia or cleft-like syrinx. We present a case of idiopathic syringomyelia and hematomyelia in a 50-year-old female patient with a 5-year follow-up on her disease progression. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images revealed low-signal intensity on T1 and high-signal intensity on T2, with elevated hemorrhagic signal intensity on T1 and low peripheral signal intensity on T2. Spina bifida, diplomyelia, and Chiari-like malformation in an Aberdeen Angus calf.

BACKGROUND: Spina bifida and Chiari-like malformation are rare congenital anomalies resulting in severe neurological signs in calves. The cause is unclear, but genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. CASE PRESENTATION: A one-day-old, female, Aberdeen Angus calf was referred to the Clinic for Cattle, University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany, because of inability to stand. The calf had a circular hairless area located over the caudal part of the sacrum and showed paraparesis, reduced spinal reflex responses in the hind limbs, ventral strabismus, and exophthalmo

Unraveling the Diagnostic Challenge of Arachnoiditis Ossificans in Association with Syringomyelia: A Review of the Literature and Two Case Reports.

INTRODUCTION: Arachnoiditis ossificans (AO) associated with syringomyelia (SM) is a rare pathology. Its clinical and image-based diagnostic features are challenging to identify. Only a limited number of cases have been published thus far. We present two new cases and offer a review of the literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search using PubMed , Web of Science , and Google Scholar with the following keywords: Arachnoiditis ossificans, leptomeningeal calcification, and spinal meningeal calcification, in combination with syrinx, syringomyelia, hydromyelia, co

Spinal cord malformations's epidemiology in French children: National cross sectional study based on medico-administrative database.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological data on rare spinal cord malformations in children are lacking in France. Using the national hospital discharge database (PMSI), we studied the care trajectories and estimated the morbidity and mortality burden of these conditions. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a nationwide historical cohort study from 2010 to 2020, including children diagnosed with rare spinal cord diseases within the scope of the C-MAVEM network. Cases were identified through ICD-10 codes using a semi-automated, multicenter-validated extraction algorithm (positive predictive value >80%). Incidence an

MRI Insights in Chiari Malformation Type 1 and Variations With Hydrosyringomyelia.

Chiari malformation (CM) type 1 is a complex neurological disorder characterized by the displacement of the cerebellar tonsils into the upper spinal canal. Hydrosyringomyelia (HSM), which frequently coexists with this condition, presents diagnostic and treatment problems due to its broad spectrum of symptoms. There are various forms of CMs, with CM type 1 (CM1) being the most common type. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the best imaging technique to properly identify and diagnose CM1 and HSM. Important imaging findings include downward displacement of the cerebellar tonsils across the fora

Hydromyelia and Intramedullary Abscess Complications of Dermal Sinus Tract: Rare Case in a Child.

The dermal sinus tract (DST) is an infrequent form of spina bifida occulta that can be complicated by infections. This is a case report of a child with a rare association of DST complications, namely hydromyelia and intramedullary abscess. A 1-year-old male child was admitted to the hospital with a history of fever and progressive loss of lower-limb movements and the presence of an ostium in the midline of the lumbar region and cutaneous stigmas with no secretion discharge. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracolumbar spine revealed an extensive intradural T12-

Intramedullary hemangioblastoma of the thoracic cord with a microsurgical approach: A case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord hemangioblastomas (HBs) account for 2-15% of all spinal cord neoplasms. They are the third most common primary intramedullary tumor (1-5%). Here, 72-year-old female presented with a thoracic intramedullary spinal HB that responded well to surgery. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 72-year-old female presented with a 3-4 years of progressive paresthesias and paraparesis. On examination, she exhibited diffuse distal weakness of the lower extremities. The magnetic resonance scan showed an intramedullary expansive lesion at the T1-T2 level that markedly enhanced with contrast with both

Older adult-onset Alexander disease with atypical clinicoradiological features: a case report.

Alexander disease (AxD) is a rare autosomal dominant astrogliopathy caused by mutations in the gene encoding for glial fibrillary acidic protein. AxD is divided into two clinical subtypes: type I and type II AxD. Type II AxD usually manifests bulbospinal symptoms and occurs in the second decade of life or later, and its radiologic features include tadpole-like appearance of the brainstem, ventricular garlands, and pial signal changes along the brainstem. Recently, eye-spot signs in the anterior medulla oblongata (MO) have been reported in patients with elderly-onset AxD. In this case, an 82-ye

The Management of Idiopathic and Refractory Syringomyelia.

Idiopathic syringomyelia (IS) and refractory syringomyelia (RS) are types of syringomyelia that often pose a management challenge and are associated with long-term clinical sequela. They are usually an epiphenomenon reflecting an underlying pathology where the treatment of the primary cause should be the aim for any surgical intervention. In the case of IS, the initial step is agreeing on the definition of the terms idiopathic and syringomyelia. After a rigorous exhaustive clinic-radiological workup, only IS patients with progressive neurology are treated, usually unblocking subarachnoid cereb

Association between subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced hydrocephalus and hydromyelia: pathophysiological changes developed in an experimental model.

BACKGROUND: Subarachnoid hemorrhage-induced hydrocephalus (SAIH) can affect the prognosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The relationship between hydromyelia and SAIH has been rarely investigated. This experimental model aimed to identify the pathophysiological changes developed in the SAH and elucidate the relationship between hydromyelia and SAIH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 25 female rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. The SAH group (n = 15), sham group (n = 5), and control group (n = 5). In the former group, the injection of 0.5 mL/kg of autologous blood was carried out into the

Chiari 1 Malformation and Epilepsy in Children: A Missing Relationship.

Purpose: Once believed a result of pathophysiological correlations, the association between Chiari 1 malformation (CM1) and epilepsy has since been considered as a coincidence, due to missing etiologic or clinical matching points. At present, the problem is being newly debated because of the increasing number of CM1 diagnoses, often among children with seizures. No specific studies on this topic are available yet. The present study aimed at updating the information on this topic by reporting on a series of children specifically enrolled and retrospectively analyzed for this purpose. Methods: A

Cerebrospinal fluid flow on time-spatial labeling inversion pulse images before and after treatment of congenital hydrocephalus in a dog.

A 3-month-old male cross-breed dog presented with signs of progressive diffuse brain disease. Noncommunicating congenital hydrocephalus concurrent with cervical syringomyelia was diagnosed on magnetic resonance images. On time-spatial labeling inversion pulse (Time-SLIP) images CSF flow through the mesencephalic aqueduct was poorly defined and there was flow into the syrinx across the craniocervical junction. After percutaneous ventricular drainage and ventriculoperitoneal shunting, CSF flow through the aqueduct was clearly detected and flow into the syrinx disappeared. In addition, CSF flow i
