Anencephaly Defects Do Not Alter Macroscopic Development of the Ureterovesical Junction in Human Fetuses.

OBJECTIVE: To compare morphometric parameters of the bladder, bladder trigone, and intramural ureter between human fetuses with and without anencephaly, adjusting for fetal age and weight. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven human fetuses were analyzed (23 controls and 14 with anencephaly), ranging from 11 to 35 weeks post-conception. Bladder dimensions, trigonal measurements, and right and left intramural ureter lengths were obtained by standardized microdissection and digital morphometry. Group comparisons were performed using Student's t-test. Multivariable linear regression models adjuste

MRI follow-up of embolized intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas using 3D time-of-flight and contrast-enhanced 3D T1-weighted GRE imaging.

BACKGROUND: Although digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the reference standard for post-treatment follow-up of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs), it is an invasive procedure associated with procedural risks and may not be justified for the follow-up of all DAVFs. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of 3D time-of-flight (3D TOF) and contrast-enhanced 3D T1-weighted gradient-echo (3D T1 Gd) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences for monitoring embolized intracranial DAVFs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective single-center stu

[The role of neuroprotection in treating oculomotor neuropathy in a child following endoscopic cystocisternostomy].

This report presents a clinical case involving a 13-year-old patient diagnosed with an instrumentally confirmed arachnoid cyst located in the right Sylvian fissure (Galassi type III). Following the surgical procedure of endoscopic cystocisternostomy, the patient exhibited signs consistent with oculomotor nerve neuropathy on the right side. Consequently, Cytoflavin (inosine+nicotinamide+riboflavin+succinic acid) was included in the treatment regimen, administered intravenously at a dose of 10.0 g in 200 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride solution daily for 10 days. During the treatment, the patient's c

[Newborn with neurofibromatosis type 1 and meningoencephalocele].

In this case report, a newborn with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and meningoencephalocele is presented. The foetus had inherited the same pathogenic defect in the NF1 gene as the father and was therefore closely monitored prenatally. The infant was born with a large frontonasal meningoencephalocele. This has not been described before and medical experience and knowledge is therefore sparse. In this case, early diagnostic imaging and scheduling of surgical intervention in collaboration with neuro- and plastic surgeons was performed.

[Arachnoid web presenting as tetraparesis].

Arachnoid webs are rare intradural lesions which disrupt cerebrospinal fluid flow and may cause spinal cord compression. This is a case report of a previously healthy 19-year-old woman who presented with acute back pain and rapidly progressive tetraparesis. MRI revealed cervical spinal cord ischaemia and an arachnoid web at the thoracic level. Surgical removal led to partial neurological recovery. Early recognition is essential, as timely surgery may prevent irreversible injury.

Putative Transcriptomic Endotypes Reveal Neuronal, Immune, and Metabolic Heterogeneity in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy with Hippocampal Sclerosis.

Temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS) is a biologically heterogeneous disorder in which neuronal loss, gliosis, neuroinflammation, and metabolic stress may coexist but are unlikely to be uniformly represented across all patients. To investigate this heterogeneity at the molecular level, we analysed publicly available hippocampal transcriptomic data from individuals with TLE-HS. Our analyses identified three transcriptomically defined putative endotypes within this shared neuropathological diagnosis. These states were associated with distinct molecular programs, including a

Inherited and early-life vulnerability in functional neurological disorder and functional somatic symptoms: A retrospective cohort and case-control study from a large electronic health record database.

BACKGROUND: Biological factors affecting motor, sensory, and integrative processing may predispose to functional neurological disorder (FND) and functional somatic symptoms. While early-life influences have traditionally been conceptualized within psychological frameworks, the contribution of early-life biological vulnerabilities to symptom expression remains unclear. METHODS: Using TriNetX, a large electronic health records database, we assessed proportions of inherited, congenital, perinatal, and neurodevelopmental diagnoses, capturing a range of early-life conditions. We compared 188,868 i

Molecular-genetic mechanisms of cerebral arteriovenous malformations: A systematic review of germline, somatic and experimental evidence.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are high-flow vascular anomalies that carry a considerable burden of haemorrhagic morbidity. Work over the past decade has shown that both inherited syndromes and apparently sporadic lesions can be traced to alterations in a handful of signalling pathways, but the relevant evidence sits awkwardly between human genetic studies, animal models, and molecular profiling experiments. To bring together the current evidence on the molecular and genetic underpinnings of cerebral AVM formation, clinical course, and candidate therapeutic targets. We searched ME

The kinase inhibitor dabrafenib halts progression of cerebral cavernous malformations in a BRAF-independent manner.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) constitute the second most common type of intracranial vascular malformations. Cavernomas arise because of somatic or autosomal dominant inherited loss-of-function mutations in CCM genes, forming fragile mulberry-like malformed blood vessel structures that are prone to leak and break. Treatment is limited to surgical removal of solitary cavernomas, and because patients often present with multiple lesions, pharmacological alternatives to surgery are needed. We performed a high-throughput screen of 5200 bioactive molecules in programmed cell death 10 (PDCD

A Balanced Chromosomal Rearrangement Disrupting the Telomerase RNA Component Gene Causes Short Telomere-Mediated Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Excessive telomere shortening contributes to pulmonary fibrosis (PF), with at least 30% of familial cases attributed to telomere biology disorders (TBDs). However, TBD-associated PF remains underdiagnosed because of unidentified disease-causing mutations and limited referral for telomere and genetic testing. Here, we combined telomeric restriction fragment analysis, telomere analysis by a long-read Nanopore sequencing method (NanoTelSeq), exome sequencing (ES), and optical genome mapping (OGM) to investigate the underlying cause of disease in a family affected by PF, microcephaly, and prematur

A Familial Case of Thauvin-Robinet-Faivre Syndrome (TROFAS), Presenting With Postaxial Polydactyly and Upper Lip Vascular Malformation.

Thauvin-Robinet-Faivre syndrome (TROFAS, OMIM #617107) is a recently identified autosomal recessive disorder characterised by syndromic overgrowth, facial dysmorphism, mild intellectual disability, variable congenital anomalies, and occasional tumour occurrence. TROFAS results from homozygous or compound heterozygous variants in the FIBP gene, encoding the intracellular binding protein for acidic fibroblast growth factor. This protein plays a role in the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signalling pathway, which is involved in cell proliferation and contributes to the development of several stru

Does electrocorticographic guidance improve seizure outcomes following cavernoma resection?

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are vascular anomalies frequently associated with drug-resistant epilepsy. Surgical resection is a well-established treatment; however, the optimal strategy to achieve long-term seizure freedom (SF) remains unclear. Intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) may enhance seizure outcome by guiding resection extent, yet comparative evidence is limited. To evaluate the efficacy of ECoG-guided resection in patients with CCMs, a single-center comparative retrospective cohort analysis and a meta-analysis were performed. METHODS: We analyzed 67 adul

Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation for functional recovery in individuals with hereditary spastic paraplegia: Protocol for a pilot clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a rare genetic neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive lower-extremity spasticity, weakness, and gait impairment resulting from corticospinal tract degeneration. With no disease-modifying therapies available, novel strategies to improve motor function are needed. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation approach that may improve motor function but has not been prospectively evaluated in HSP. This study will assess the safety, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of repeated tSCS in adults
