[Mitomicyn C eye drops as alternative treatment for pyogenic granuloma in anophthalmic socket].

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of mitomycin C eye drops 0.02% concentration (0.02% MMC) in pyogenic granuloma in anophthalmic socket. METHODS: Six patients who presented pyogenic granuloma were treated with 0.02% MMC four times a day in fifteen-day cycles with intervals of fifteen days between each cycle. The patients were observed every week. RESULTS: Among the six studied patients, one presented a complete resolution of the pyogenic granuloma after a ten-day treatment with 0.02% MMC that is, before the end of the first cycle. In two patients, the treatment was successful after two weeks

Congenital anomalies of the eye and adnexae in Edo State, Nigeria.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Congenital ocular anomalies are the result of defective development of the ocular tissues during intrauterine life. The aim of this study was to increase awareness amongst Ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers on some cogenital ocular anomalies seen in clinical practice. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The 5 cases presented in this study were cases seen during our routine clinics at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State and Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State. Informed consent was obtained from the patients regarding the study and the

Anophthalmia and microphthalmia in the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System.

BACKGROUND: A higher than expected rate of anophthalmia/microphthalmia (A/M) for 1999 was noted in both the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (ACASS) and the Canadian Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System (CCASS). Since this increase was at variance with the previous 19 years, we performed a review to determine whether the increase was true and, if so, the possible explanation. METHODS: We reviewed the records of the cases of A/M in the ACASS together with the accompanying attachments (e.g., consultant, autopsy and chromosome reports) for 1991-2001. In addition, we contacted

Heterozygous mutations of OTX2 cause severe ocular malformations.

Major malformations of the human eye, including microphthalmia and anophthalmia, are examples of phenotypes that recur in families yet often show no clear Mendelian inheritance pattern. Defining loci by mapping is therefore rarely feasible. Using a candidate-gene approach, we have identified heterozygous coding-region changes in the homeobox gene OTX2 in eight families with ocular malformations. The expression pattern of OTX2 in human embryos is consistent with the eye phenotypes observed in the patients, which range from bilateral anophthalmia to retinal defects resembling Leber congenital am

Tumour necrosis factor receptor 1 and hepatocyte regeneration in acetaminophen toxicity: a kinetic study of proliferating cell nuclear antigen and cytokine expression.

To determine the importance of tumour necrosis factor receptor 1 in hepatocyte regeneration in acetaminophen toxicity, wild type and tumour necrosis factor receptor 1 knock-out mice were dosed with acetaminophen (300 mg/kg intraperitoneally) and sacrificed at 4, 24, 48, 72, and 96 hr. Biochemical parameters (alanine aminotransferase, ALT) and histologic evidence of hepatocellular injury were comparable in the two groups of mice. To examine the effects of tumour necrosis factor receptor 1 on hepatocyte regeneration, immunohistochemical staining with proliferating cell nuclear antigen was perfor

Epidemiologic characteristics of anophthalmia and bilateral microphthalmia among 2.5 million births in California, 1989-1997.

There is a paucity of epidemiologic information about the eye malformations anophthalmia and microphthalmia. Using data from a large population-based registry, we explored prevalences and maternal/infant characteristics associated with anophthalmia and bilateral microphthalmia. Data were derived from the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program, a population-based active surveillance system for collecting information on infants and fetuses with congenital malformations using multiple source ascertainment. Approximately 2.5 million births (liveborn and stillborn) occurred during the ascertai

Dissecting the genetic complexity of human 6p deletion syndromes by using a region-specific, phenotype-driven mouse screen.

Monosomy of the human chromosome 6p terminal region results in a variety of congenital malformations that include brain, craniofacial, and organogenesis abnormalities. To examine the genetic basis of these phenotypes, we have carried out an unbiased functional analysis of the syntenic region of the mouse genome (proximal Mmu13). A genetic screen for recessive mutations in this region recovered thirteen lines with phenotypes relevant to a variety of clinical conditions. These include two loci that cause holoprosencephaly, two that underlie anophthalmia, one of which also contributes to other cr

SOX2 mutation causes anophthalmia, hearing loss, and brain anomalies.

The SOX2 transcription factor is expressed early in the embryonic stem cells of the blastocyst and later in the neural stem cells. It is a member of the SOX family of proteins that carry a DNA-binding high-mobility group domain and additional domains that regulate embryonic development and cell fate determinations. We surveyed 93 patients with severe eye malformations for mutations in SOX2. Here, we report a novel nonsense mutation in one female patient with bilateral clinical anophthalmia, absence of all optic pathways, and other neurological abnormalities. The mutation, Q155X, creates a prem

Early sonographic detection of recurrent fetal eye anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the possible association between congenital eye anomaly of a previous child in the family and current congenital eye anomaly. METHODS: An early transvaginal anomaly scan at 14-16 gestational weeks was used to diagnose fetal eye anomalies in five cases in which at least one previous child in the family had the same congenital eye anomaly. RESULTS: At least one cataract was detected in four of the five fetuses and bilateral anophthalmia in one. The congenital cataract in one case was part of multiple pterygium syndrome. Both of these extremely rare malformations are com

Ocular coloboma: a reassessment in the age of molecular neuroscience.

Congenital colobomata of the eye are important causes of childhood visual impairment and blindness. Ocular coloboma can be seen in isolation and in an impressive number of multisystem syndromes, where the eye phenotype is often seen in association with severe neurological or craniofacial anomalies or other systemic developmental defects. Several studies have shown that, in addition to inheritance, environmental influences may be causative factors. Through work to identify genes underlying inherited coloboma, significant inroads are being made into understanding the molecular events controlling

[Anophthalmos--a conjunctival implant].

The authors submit information on the completed development of a conjunctival implant and its use for modelling of the conjunctival sac in inborn and acquired anophthalmos. Plastic solution in inborn types is used for cosmetic reasons in unilateral degenerative and consecutive anophthalmos. The orbit and adnexa are usually only little affected. The other indication is secondary anophthalmos after enucleation of the bulbus when the conjunctival sac is threatened by retraction due to actionotherapy of the orbital area or a scarry process after a previous injury. The implant is a convex concave c

[Basic trends in the organization of ocular prosthetics service].

The key issues related with rendering the ocular prosthetic aid to patients with anophthalmos and with cosmetically inferior, i.e. a smaller-size, blind eye, are in the focus of attention. Around 320,000 persons need ocular prostheses in the territory of the Russian Federation, hence adequate prosthetic measures are taken to cope with the cosmetic, medical and social rehabilitation of patients. The ocular prosthetics service deals with issues related with prostheses manufacturing technologies as well as with other therapeutic and surgical aspects which call for working out a unified policy wit

[Dermis-fat graft. Possibilities and limitations].

Various alloplastic orbital implants, preferably with a spherical configuration, are employed for the routine care of an enucleated socket. Alternately, an autologous dermis-fat graft can also be used. It represents a safe alternative to alloplastic orbital implants. The method does not require preserved sclera, thus excluding even theoretically possible transfer of pathogens such as viruses or prions in sclera preserved in alcohol. Loss of the transplant or other serious complications were only very rarely observed, late extrusion is unknown. Due to its high degree of safety concurrent with e

[Bilateral anophthalmia associated with further anomalies of the head in German Holstein calves].

Two female calves of the breed German Holsteins showing bilateral anophthalmia and deformations of the jaws such as brachygnathia superior and bilateral cleft of lips and noses, respectively, were born on two different farms. Similar congenital defects could be found neither in the relatives of the affected calves nor in other animals of the same herds. A monogenic autosomal recessive inheritance may have caused bilateral anophthalmia. Chromosomal aberrations could not be detected in the affected calves. Management of microphthalmos and anophthalmos: prosthetic experience.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital microphthalmos and anophthalmos are rare. The reduced eyeball size, or its absence, prevents the normal development of the orbit. This lack of development has functional, physical and psychological repercussions. The authors report their experience of prosthetic treatment for microphthalmos and anophthalmos. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study is about 11 children with 13 cases of microphthalmos and 2 of anophthalmos. These cases have been clinically observed between 1998 and 2002.
