Two sporadic cases of eventration of the diaphragm are reported; one had bilateral colobomatous microphthalmia and the other had anophthalmia. Absence of polydactyly and presence of eventration rather than diaphragmatic hernia helped to exclude Fryns syndrome. These cases together with published cases with overlapping features support the thesis that this combination of defects is nonrandom and of heterogeneous cause. Some cases are due to a pleiotropic gene defect. In other cases, a polytypic developmental field involving an unknown developmental cascade common to the eye and diaphragm may pr

PURPOSE: The aim of this paper is to describe a simple method for severely contracted anophthalmic socket repair in which a silicone sphere is used as an expander for widening and deepening severely contracted conjunctival sacs.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: This method was used in five patients. Each patient had undergone previous operations but they could not wear artificial eyes and there was no hope of performing any other type of surgical procedure successfully. In our surgical method, the severely contracted conjunctiva is cut deeply at the desired level of the upper and lower eyelid fornix. A c

We report a newborn female with craniofacial malformations, bilateral anophthalmia, large abnormally shaped ears, short neck, small distal phalanges and nails, left diaphragmatic hernia, hypoplastic optic nerves, severe pulmonary hypoplasia, and an accessory spleen, and describe the autopsy findings. The infant expired at 18 h of life. The features were most consistent with Fryns syndrome although other conditions were considered including Matthew Wood syndrome. Anophthalmia, to our knowledge, has not been reported previously in Fryns syndrome; however, eye findings are common, particularly mi

A case of a newborn with atresia of the transverse colon and right facial hemiaplasia, anophthalmia, and cerebral dysfunction is reported. Colon atresia is a rare cause of congenital bowel obstruction and often associated with other malformations such as abdominal wall defects, gastrointestinal, cardiac, urogenital, and musculosceletal lesions. Facial hemiaplasia may arise in frame of chromosomal defects or as a result of neurovascular compromise caused by congenital amniotic bands. However, the combination of colon atresia and facial hemiaplasia has not been reported before.

Ophthalmo-acromelic syndrome (OAS) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder characterised by eye malformations ranging from true anophthalmia to mild microophthalmia and acromelic malformations. In this article, we report a newborn infant with OAS because of its rare presentation. He was the fourth sibling affected in the family. The parents were healthy but there was a close blood relationship between the parents. Physical examination revealed bilateral true anophthalmia and oligodactyly (bilateral four toes) on the feet. He had no other additional abnormalities. We consider that thi

Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior an

We report a case of reflex bradycardia due to ophthalmic surgical stimulus in a congenitally anophthalmic child. Although the oculocardiac reflex has been previously reported from the empty orbit following enucleation, we are unaware of other cases involving a congenital absence of the globe.

We report a patient who presented with anophthalmia, panhypopituitarism, early onset of end stage renal failure, and craniofacial abnormalities. MRI at age 3 revealed that the pituitary was absent and renal biopsy demonstrated nephronophthisis as the cause of the renal failure. A similar syndrome has been associated with interstitial deletions of chromosome 14q22 and in one case hemizygosity for SIX6 was demonstrated. The patient reported here had a normal karyotype and Southern blot did not reveal loss of one copy of SIX6. We discuss other possible candidate genes that could be implicated in

BACKGROUND: Congenital anophthalmos is a rare condition in which intervention in an early age can stimulate orbital expansion. The therapeutic goal was to allow retention of a suitable prosthesis and to maximise facial symmetry.
METHODS AND PATIENTS: We report on 3 anophthalmic newborn male patients, of which one presented with microphthalmos in the other eye as well as associated systemic disorders. Solid moulded shapes were adapted and manufactured out of methylmethacrylate to increase expansion of orbital soft tissue and bone. The moulding of the orbita was performed by silicone made of tw

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and causes of blindness in children vary widely between regions. Few epidemiological data are available on the relative importance of the major congenital anomalies of the globe (i.e., microphthalmos, anophthalmos, coloboma) as causes of blindness in children. The aim of this study was to determine the re-gional variation in the proportion of severe visual impairment and blindness due to congenital abnormalities of the globe in children in schools for the blind and in those identified through Community Based Rehabilitation programs. Other objectives were to estimate

A case of facial cleft that fits the anatomic description of the rare bilateral Tessier no. 5 cleft accompanied by unilateral no. 1 and no. 6 clefts is presented, and brings the total number of reported cases to 21. This case and a review of the literature help to define the soft-tissue and bony course of these clefts, and also emphasize the role of three-dimensional computed tomography to show the bony cleft route. The diagnosis and treatment plan of the no. 5 cleft as well as other rare clefts such as no. 1 and no. 6 clefts are discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of intraorbital implantation of hydroxyapatite spheres wrapped with polyester fiber heart patches.
METHOD: According to the rectus contraction points four rectus were found and the rectus valves were created in anophthalmos. Then the hydroxyapatite sphere wrapped by the polyester fiber heart patch was inserted in the orbit.
RESULT: There were 13 cases in this group. Of them 11 patients showed very good operative results, Local poor healing of bulbar conjunctiva and fascia occurred in 2 patients. The wound in one patient healed very well after a simple repairi

Major characteristics of the acrocallosal syndrome include severe mental retardation, agenesis or hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, and polydactyly of fingers and toes. In the past few years, anencephaly has also been noted, together with other midline defects. We report on a nonconsanguineous, Norwegian couple with a history of two pregnancies with a male and a female fetus, respectively, with anencephaly, median cleft lip and palate, omphalocele, and preaxial polydactyly, suggesting the diagnosis of the acrocallosal syndrome. Both fetuses also lacked eyes and nose, a finding not previously

PURPOSE: The authors report findings in a 9-month-old male infant with heterotopic brain tissue in the orbit, and compare and contrast the characteristics in this patient with the few other descriptions of such lesions in the literature.
METHODS: Excisional biopsy of the growth was undertaken by means of an anterior orbitotomy.
RESULTS: A 9-month-old male infant had a history of congenital left 'anophthalmia' and a slowly growing mass in the left orbit. An MRI scan revealed an orbital mass with solid and cystic components. Histological study of the excised tissue was performed and revealed a

Primary anophthalmos is a heterogeneous condition. In its nonsyndromal form, it is usually considered an autosomal recessive trait. However, other causes such as chromosomal abnormalities and prenatal insults need to be considered. We report on a unique reciprocal translocation 46,XX,t(3;11)(q27;p11.2) in a baby with isolated anophthalmos. Both Chitayat et al. [1996] and Alvarez Arratia et al. [1984] have reported on cases of terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 3. In each case the child had multiple anomalies including microphthalmia or anophthalmia. Because our patient appears to

To identify the critical time for developmental eye abnormalities, pregnant C 57 BL/6 NJcl mice were injected intraperitoneally once with 12.5 mg/kg of retinoic acid on days 7 (day-7 group), 8 (day-8 group), 9 (day-9 group), 10 (day-10 group), and 11 (day-11 group) of pregnancy. Each group consisted of 5 pregnant mice. The fetuses were observed grossly on day 18 of gestation, and the eyes were examined histologically in serial sections. Various gross malformations such as microphthalmos, cleft lip and palate, and central nervous system anomalies were observed in the day-7 group. However, micro

Amelia is an extremely rare abnormality with a highest reported incidence of 1 in 67,500 liveborn infants. We now report four cases in each of which amelia involving one upper limb occurred in association with anal atresia. The pattern of other abnormalities present in these cases suggests that this combination of amelia and anal atresia falls within the spectrum of the VACTERL association.

The eyes absent (eya) gene plays an essential role in the events that lead to formation of the Drosophila eye; without expression of eya in retinal progenitor cells, they undergo programmed cell death just prior to the morphogenetic furrow, leading to an eyeless or reduced eye phenotype. The eya gene has recently been found to be highly conserved to humans, defining a new gene family. Insights into the gene's function in the fly, therefore, are likely to be relevant to the role of its homologs in vertebrates. Detailed studies at the subcellular level indicate that the Eya protein is localized

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological research using patient records faces considerable uncertainty regarding requirements for local ethical review, confidentiality of data and patient permission.
SETTING AND DESIGN: We report the experiences of the national study of clustering and geographical variation in anophthalmos and microphthalmos, which, from 1994, has been compiling a register of affected children born in England since 1988. The information is obtained from clinicians and local health authority records without any direct contact with patients or their families.
RESULTS: Of 110 district healt
