An unusual case of iris and lens colobomas: A case report.

Ocular colobomas are unusual congenital anomalies arising from abnormal ocular development and may involve different ocular structures, including the iris and lens. Typical ocular colobomas predominantly involve the inferonasal quadrant, in accordance with the inferonasal location and closure pattern of the fetal fissure. Atypical colobomas outside this region are unusual and may complicate clinical evaluation and surgical planning. We report the case of a 49-year-old male with congenital inferonasal iris coloboma associated with a superotemporal lens coloboma, sectorial cataract, superior pos

Novel mutations of PIKFYVE identified in 322 sporadic cataract patients.

BACKGROUND: PIKFYVE, a novel pathogenic gene causing congenital cataract, its association with sporadic cataracts has not been systematically investigated. This study aimed to explore PIKFYVE mutation profiles in major sporadic cataract subtypes. METHODS: We enrolled 322 sporadic cataract cases including 240 age-related cataract cases, 63 diabetes mellitus cataract cases and 19 high myopic cataract cases. One hundred seventy non -cataract individuals were enrolled as controls. PIKFYVE variants were initially screened using FastTarget region sequencing and validated by Sanger sequencing. Patho

A Rare Case of Multi-System Involvement and Hereditary Pulmonary Hypertension Caused by De Novo Heterozygous CAV1 Mutation in a Pediatric Patient.

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare but life-threatening condition in children, with hereditary forms often being linked to mutations in genes such as bone morphogenetic protein receptor type 2 (BMPR2), caveolin 1 (CAV1), and potassium channel subfamily K member 3 (KCNK3). Among these, CAV1 mutations are associated with severe disease phenotypes, though cases resulting from de novo heterozygous CAV1 mutations with multi-system involvement remain rarely reported. The CAV1 mutation (c.424C > T, p.Q142X) disrupts caveolin-1 function, leading to dysregulated pulmonary vascular re

Anaesthethic management on a pediatric patient with Sengers syndrome. Case report.

Sengers Syndrome is an autosomal recessive mitochondrial myopathy caused by mutations of the acylglycerol kinase gene, which leads to an abnormal musculoskeletal and myocardial lipid and glycogen accumulation. It is characterized by congenital cataracts, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, skeletal myopathy and lactic acidosis (especially under stress condition). Therefore, cataract surgery might be indicated. Currently there is no treatment or management formalised for this disease, meaning it is a challenge in clinical practice. We introduce a case of perioperative anaesthetic management on a patie

Custom-made anterior chamber intraocular lens for aphakia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Aphakia without adequate capsular support requires alternative intraocular lens (IOL) fixation strategies. Standard options include sulcus-fixated posterior chamber IOLs and retropupillary iris-claw lenses, both of which depend on specific anatomical prerequisites. When these are absent, anterior chamber IOLs (AC-IOLs) become one of the few remaining options; however, the only widely available angle-supported model has been the rigid Kelman Multiflex (PMMA), unchanged since its FDA approval in 1980. We describe the development and three-year clinical outcome of a custom-made, folda

SensX: Model-Agnostic Local Feature Attribution via Calibrated Global Sensitivity Analysis.

Local feature attribution is a standard tool for auditing and debugging deep learning predictions, but existing attribution methods are not designed for systems that chain pretrained, frozen, or API-only modules. Gradient-based methods such as Integrated Gradients require an end-to-end computational graph that may be unavailable. Perturbation-based methods such as KernelSHAP require a reference input or background distribution whose choice can substantially alter attributions and may not be defensible for composite pipelines. We present SensX, a local attribution method that treats the model a

Gut microbiota and pediatric eye diseases: current insights, mechanistic underpinnings, and future outlook.

BACKGROUND: As a core component of the human microecosystem, the gut microbiota modulates systemic immune-inflammatory responses, metabolic homeostasis, and neural signal transmission via the gut-eye axis. Dysbiosis of the gut microbiota has been closely linked to the onset and progression of multiple ophthalmic disorders in adults. Childhood represents a critical window for both gut microbial colonization and maturation, as well as a formative period for ocular development and visual function establishment. OBJECTIVE: This review systematically examines the evidence connecting gut microbiota
