Congenital cataract and spherophakia leading to starvation in a free-ranging muskox neonate from the Northwest Territories, Canada.

A muskox neonate (Ovibos moschatus) that died of starvation was diagnosed with congenital lenticular anomalies that included spherophakia and hypermature cataract associated with probable lens-induced lymphocytic uveitis and neutrophilic keratitis. Impaired sight as a result of cataract and associated inflammation likely contributed to abandonment and starvation, although maternal death cannot be excluded definitively. Ocular lesions, such as congenital cataracts and spherophakia in neonates, may be important factors affecting survival in free-ranging animals.

[Scleral-fixated intraocular lenses with Z‑suture technique for lens subluxation associated with spherophakia].

This article reports the case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with spherophakia and bilateral lens subluxation. Spherophakia patients have abnormally weak zonula fibers, whereby the lens can subluxate. The patient was treated by phacoemulsification combined with the placement of a scleral-fixated intraocular lens with the Z‑suture technique. Scleral-fixated intraocular lenses are a treatment option for spherophakia. The knotless Z‑suture technique has a low risk of suture erosion and scleral atrophy.

Sutureless Scleral-Fixated Intraocular Lens Implantation for Refractive Rehabilitation in Eyes With Spherophakia.

PURPOSE: Spherophakia is a rare, debilitating congenital ocular disorder. METHODS: This institution-based, retrospective, interventional study evaluated medical records of 16 patients with spherophakia with a median age of 19.5 years. Twenty-six eyes underwent scleral-fixated intraocular lens implantation. The technique involved 2 parallel-to-limbus scleral tunnels fashioned using a microincision vitrectomy blade, followed by lensectomy, core vitrectomy, externalization of haptics through 2 separate diametrically opposite sclerotomies, and tucking in of the haptics into the tunnels. Anterior

Spherophakia and Ectopia Lentis in a Sturge-Weber Patient: A Case Report.

Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS) is a rare, sporadic neurocutaneous disorder, primarily characterized by port-wine stain (PWS) over the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve (V1) territory (hallmark feature) and glaucoma (in 30-60% of cases). Other ocular manifestations include episcleral involvement of the PWS, choroidal vascular malformations, and iris heterochromia. Two previous reports also associated ectopia lentis concomitantly among these cases. However, here we report spherophakia as a novel ophthalmological finding in SWS. A 56-year-old female previously diagnosed with SWS presented

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-intellectual disability syndrome: A report of nine Egyptian patients with further expansion of phenotypic and mutational spectrum.

Blepharophimosis-ptosis-intellectual disability syndrome (BPID) is an extremely rare recognizable blepharophimosis intellectual disability syndrome (BID). It is caused by biallelic variants in the UBE3B gene with only 24 patients described worldwide. Herein, we report on the clinical, brain imaging and molecular findings of additional nine patients from six unrelated Egyptian families. Patients presented with the characteristic features of the syndrome including blepharophimosis, ptosis, upslanted palpebral fissures with epicanthic folds, hypertelorism, long philtrum, high arched palate, micro

Loss of ciliary zonule protein hydroxylation and lens stability as a predicted consequence of biallelic ASPH variation.

PURPOSE: Stability of the crystalline lens requires formation of microfibril bundles and their higher-order structures of ciliary zonules. Trauma, malformation, or degeneration of the ciliary zonules can lead to dislocation or displacement of the lens, which in turn can cause transient or permanent loss of visual acuity. The purpose of this study was to identify the predicted substrates of aspartyl/asparaginyl hydroxylase (ASPH), a 2-oxoglutarate- and Fe2+-dependent hydroxylase, which may account for the lens instability phenotype of ASPH-associated syndromes. METHODS: A single proband of Eur

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in a spherophakic lens: An unusual case report.

RATIONALE: Spherophakia is a rare diagnosis which is often associated with a shallow anterior chamber, angle-closure glaucoma, lens subluxation, and lenticular myopia. When cataracts occur with subluxation of the lens, vision is often markedly affected. This often presents surgeons with a unique challenge of maintaining good visual outcomes while minimizing potential complications. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old female was referred for ophthalmological assessment due to decreased vision in the left eye. In the left eye, the best-corrected visual acuity at distance was 20/125 with manifest re

BACKGROUND Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) is a rare autosomal recessive encephalopathy of early onset. AGS visual dysfunction range from nystagmus and optic atrophy to cortical blindness in affected individuals; however, congenital glaucoma has been recently noticed among AGS pediatric patients. According to the literature, aniridia has never been recognized among AGS patients. CASE REPORT We report the case of a 4-year-old boy with AGS who had multiple congenital anomalies in the eyes. He was found to have congenital glaucoma, nystagmus, spherophakia with shallow chambers, and aniridia in b

Accommodative esotropia and Brown syndrome in a girl with recessive geleophysic dysplasia.

Geleophysic dysplasia and Weill-Marchesani syndrome are acromelic dysplasias characterized by short stature, brachydactyly, and joint contractures. Recessive Weill-Marchesani syndrome typically includes spherophakia, but the ocular phenotype of recessive geleophysic dysplasia is not well defined. We describe the ocular phenotype of a girl with genetically confirmed recessive geleophysic dysplasia (biallelic ADAMTSL2 mutations). Features included high corneal astigmatism, accommodative esotropia, unilateral Brown syndrome, and no evidence for zonular disease at 12 years of age.
