The authors focus on the evolution of visual function postoperatorial, based on 349 patients which where diagnosed and operated by congenital cataract, during 1973-1992, in Tg. Mureş Ophthalmological Clinic. All the interventions were done by discising the anterior capsula and washing the lens masses. After studying these cases, the authors conclude that visual prognosis of the operated eye depends on the presence of other congenital abnormalities, on the age of the patient and on the intervention type. In spite of all surgical progresses, congenital cataract still stands as an affection with

Beginning in June 1991, we implanted a newly designed, black diaphragm intraocular lens (IOL) into 13 eyes with congenital aniridia after cataract surgery. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first group of patients to receive a black diaphragm IOL. With the first prototype we experienced various difficulties, which prompted four design modifications. The latest IOL with a diaphragm diameter of 10 mm can be guided safely into the ciliary sulcus. IOL implantation improved visual acuity in 9 of 13 eyes; 4 of these exhibited considerably less nystagmus than was observed preoperatively. Duri

Hereditary cataract in dogs occurs as an autosomal recessive trait. The opacity is primarily in the lens nucleus and posterior cortex. The affected animals also have other ocular abnormalities such as microphthalmia. To understand the genetic basis of this disorder, we have analyzed leukocyte DNA from affected and normal dogs for possible mutations in the homeobox containing gene and myotonic dystrophy locus. The results show that there are no signs of microdeletion, insertion, point mutation and rearrangements in these loci. Although these observations cannot completely rule out the possibili

Review of the limited literature on camelid eyes suggests they are anatomically similar to those of domestic livestock species, except they lack meibomian glands and have iridial folds (rather than corpora nigra). The microbial flora of the healthy camelid conjunctival sac also appears to be similar to those of domestic livestock and pets, except that no Mycoplasma have been isolated from camelids. Ocular diseases for which camelids are presented to veterinarians are numerous and varied. The most frequently presented conditions are ocular trauma and congenital abnormalities. Trauma to cornea,

Congenital ocular defects, including microphthalmia, anophthalmia and cataracts appear in a small proportion (5-15%) of the C57BL/6 inbred strain of laboratory mice. Previous work from this laboratory utilizing C57BL/6 in equilibrium with DBA/2 allophenic (mosaic) mice suggested that the underlying cause of these defects may be a deficiency in C57BL/6 lens development. In these C57BL/6 in equilibrium with DBA/2 allophenic animals, the major proportion of the lens cells were of the DBA/2 strain, in contrast to the other ocular and non-ocular tissues examined where no strain-specific competition

Ocular defects are often found in association with many systemic disorders. Some are already present at birth, but in other cases they develop in early infancy or later in life. They are found associated with connective tissue disorders, neurological conditions, chromosomal abnormalities and dermatological disorders. Some of these syndromes have a genetic basis but often it is uncertain whether they are inherited and their cause is unknown.

Microphthalmia and cerebral atrophies were induced in mouse embryos after injection of murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) into the conceptus at midgestation. The concepti of ICR mice on day 8.5 of gestation were injected with MCMV through the uterine wall, then pregnancies were allowed to continue. On day 15.5 of gestation, microphthalmia was observed in 19.2% of the MCMV-injected embryos (1 x 10(4) plaque-forming units). As the survival rate decreased when pregnancies were allowed to continue further, incidence of microphthalmia decreased, whereas cerebral atrophies, determined by examining the hi

In a prospective study the changes in the ocular axial lengths and in the overall refractions were examined in cases of unilateral and bilateral congenital cataract requiring surgery during the first year of life. Measurements were taken on 18 children with unilateral and on 20 children with bilateral congenital cataract at the time of surgery and up to eight years postoperatively. Surgery was performed via a pars plana/plicata approach, and all infants were fitted with contact lenses. In cases of unilateral cataract, the ocular axial length tended to be superior to the age-matched values alre

BACKGROUND: Hitherto no attention was paid to the prebasal vitreous body in children with congenital aniridia. Obviously there are, at least occasionally, two remarkable anomalies of the anterior hyaloid membrane.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two children (one 3 years and the other 4 years old) with congenital anirida were examined in supine position at a special slitlamp in general anaesthesia. Both children were healthy besides their ocular malformation; pregnancy and delivery were unremarkable.
RESULTS: Only the younger child showed bilaterally in symmetrical fashion a thin, circular, whitish l

The Lowe oculocerebrorenal syndrome (OCRL; McKusick 309000) is an X-linked disorder characterized by congenital cataracts, muscular hypotonia, mental retardation, and Fanconi syndrome of the renal tubules. A pair of yeast artificial chromosomes (YACs) that span the Xq25-q26 translocation breakpoint in a female with OCRL were used as probes to screen cDNA libraries made from bovine lens and human kidney. The methods used to prepare the YACs as probes and to screen the libraries are presented in detail. Two different transcripts were found that map to the region around the Xq25-q26 breakpoint. T

A closely inbred line of Chow Chows affected with congenital cataracts was studied. Sixteen dogs were examined including 1 adult male, 2 adult females, and 13 pups. Twelve of the pups were from 6 different litters, out of 6 different bitches, all sired by 1 adult male. The exact relationship of the thirteenth pup was undetermined. Clinical evaluation included slit-lamp biomicroscopy, biomicroscopic photography, and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Clinical appearance of the cataracts was variable, ranging from incipient nuclear or capsular lesions to advanced cortical opacity. The lens nucleus was mos

Traditional surgical management of subluxated lenses is usually associated with a high incidence of operative and postoperative complication and a poor visual outcome. We treated a series of 14 patients (26 eyes) whose visual acuity could not be improved with optical correction (phakic or aphakic) with modern microsurgery and automated suction-cutting devices. Preoperative visual acuity ranged from 0.05 to 0.3. Improvement in post-operative visual acuity was documented in all operated eyes, ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 during a follow-up period ranging from 6 to 59 months (medium 43 months). The on

Microphthalmos is a developmental disorder of the eye consisting of a smaller than normal eye. This disorder can present as an isolated condition or associated with other systemic alterations. It is not uncommon for patients with microphthalmos to have congenital cataracts along with other ocular and systemic abnormalities. This paper reports the experience with 11 microphthalmic eyes of seven patients who had primary or secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation over a six-year period from 1985 to 1991. In all cases the IOL had a 13.5 mm or 14.0 mm overall diameter and a 6.0 mm or 6.5 mm o

Coloboma and ectopia of the crystalline lens are rarely encountered or diagnosed congenital defects of the equine eye. The clinical and ophthalmoscopic features of a congenital coloboma of the lens in a 3 year old Hanoverian stallion and of an ectopic lens in a 6-month old Hanoverian filly are described and depicted. In the stallion, the lens coloboma was associated with a partial coloboma of the zonules, and in the filly, the ectopic lens was small and spherical (microphakia, spherophakia) and associated with syneresis of and small floaters in the vitreous. Although it cannot be excluded that

The congenital hereditary cataracts and microphthalmia in the miniature schnauzer dog are inherited by an autosomal recessive mode. To understand the genetic basis of these diseases, the authors purified and analyzed leukocyte deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from affected and normal animals using a candidate gene approach. Because the genes that encode the lens-specific proteins, specifically, alpha, beta, and gamma crystallins and the membrane protein (MP26), are known to maintain the structure and function of the lens, the authors used complimentary DNA (cDNA) fragments that corresponded to the

Marfan syndrome is infrequently diagnosed early in infancy. The experience of the authors with 22 severely affected infants diagnosed as having Marfan syndrome in the first 3 months of life is described and the literature on 32 additional infants with Marfan syndrome is reviewed. It was found that serious cardiac pathology (82% of the patients described in the article, 94% of those described in the literature) may be present at birth, and that congenital contractures (64% of our cases, 47% of literature cases) are often an associated finding. Other useful clinical findings included arachnodact

Microphthalmos is a rare, potentially devastating condition. Catsch found 30 cases of microphthalmos in a population of 26,735 (0.11%); Scouras et al. among 120,000 ophthalmic out-patients found 70 cases of microphthalmos (0.058%); among 3,557 blind adults Lindstedt found 63 cases (1.77%) and Kissel et al. among 210,000 ophthalmic out-patients found 97 cases (0.046%). Congenital microphthalmos may be: colobomatous, complicated, pure. Pure microphthalmos or nanophthalmos is a rare condition in which the eye is reduced in size with a notably high ratio of the lens volume to eye volume, but no ot

At various gestational periods, caffeine was injected intra-arterially or intraperitoneally into pregnant rats. The teratogenic effects of caffeine on the fetal heart were dose dependent and detectable at relatively low concentrations. The most susceptible stage was during septation of the heart. The most common cardiovascular malformation was ventricular septal defect. Extracardiovascular anomalies, such as decreased thymic weight and degeneration of the lens, were found in all fetuses; skeletal malformations were found in some fetuses.

Cataract surgery was performed in six eyes of four patients with typical colobomata of the iris, choroid, and retina. Contrary to previous reports of poor surgical results in these eyes, we saw no surgical or postoperative complications. Final visual acuity was excellent in four eyes. The other two had preexisting amblyopia. Most previous reports describe outmoded extracapsular techniques or contemporary intracapsular cataract extraction, all without an intraocular lens. Five of the six eyes in this study had modern cataract surgery--phacoemulsification with a posterior chamber lens placed in

A search of literature published through the spring of 1986 yielded approximately 95 citations for the following embryonic organs in culture: kidney, pancreas, skin, palate, craniofacial tissue, tooth, lens, bones, digits, and liver. However, only the in vitro organ culture of the palate and tooth are reviewed in this paper. The other organ culture systems were not reported as teratogenic screens. Although some organs may have the potential for such use, many are currently used for evaluation of the pathogenesis associated with congenital abnormalities, cancer, or transplacental carcinogenesis
