Whistleblowing and retractions concerning Iran-affiliated medical research: motives and editorial perspectives.

Research integrity underpins credible scientific research. Whistleblowing on research fraud, including data falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism, is critical for identifying flawed publications. Here, we investigated whistleblowers' roles in the retraction of Iran-affiliated, medically related publications between 2014 and 2024 and documented whistleblowers' motives and journal editors' perspectives. We used a structured questionnaire to interview 18 whistleblowers, 10 members of editorial boards, and four editors-in-chief. We identified three dominant whistleblower motives: commitment t

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of professional commitment questionnaire among nursing students: validation using classical test theory and item response theory.

BACKGROUND: Assessing professional commitment is crucial for understanding workforce dynamics, particularly in healthcare. The Professional Commitment Questionnaire (PCQ) is a concise tool designed for such assessments. This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the PCQ into Chinese and validate its psychometric properties among nursing students. METHODS: The translation and cross-cultural adaptation were conducted using the translation, review, adjudication, pre-testing, and documentation (TRAPD) methodology. Psychometric properties were assessed through classical test theory (CTT) a

Quantitative ethnobotanical study of medicinal plants used by Mullu Kuruma community of Wayanad, the Southern Western Ghats, India.

BACKGROUND: The traditional ethnomedicinal knowledge of the Mullu Kurama tribes, one of the oldest tribal communities in Wayanad, India, holds considerable significance. Indigenous communities in the Western Ghats have developed extensive ethnomedicinal knowledge through sustained interactions with local biodiversity. However, socioeconomic changes, reduced intergenerational knowledge transmission, and conservation challenges increasingly threaten their traditional knowledge (TK) of medicinal plants. This study aims to validate the ethnomedicinal plants used by these communities and assess the

Exploring menstrual health knowledge, attitude, and experiences among adolescent girls in public schools in Georgia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Despite being a physiological process for human development, menstruation can be burdened with a complex interplay of interpersonal, social, and structural factors. Evidence on menstrual health remains scarce across Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and published research specifically addressing adolescent girls' menstrual health experiences in Georgia is lacking, despite cultural and historical factors that suggest unique challenges in this setting. Public schools represent a critical but understudied environment where infrastructural, educational, and social barriers to menstrual

Androgynous identity predicts body appreciation in Japanese sport science majors: examining the roles of sport type and competitive level.

This study investigated predictors of body appreciation among Japanese sport science majors, focusing on the roles of androgynous identity, sport type, and competitive level within a culturally distinct context. A sample of 240 university students (170 male, 70 female) completed the Bem Sex-Role Inventory and the Body Appreciation Scale-2. Results indicated that androgynous individuals reported the highest body appreciation, significantly exceeding other gender role groups, while undifferentiated individuals scored the lowest. Male participants exhibited higher body appreciation than females a

Higher LSD1 in Non-Seminomatous Germ Cell Tumors and LSD1 Inhibition by NCL1 Suppresses Embryonal Carcinoma Growth.

Lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1/KDM1A) is a potential therapeutic target in non-seminomatous testicular germ cell tumors (NSGCTs). We assessed LSD1 and Ki-67 immunostaining in 74 histologically distinct tumor components from 53 patients with testicular germ cell tumors and studied the selective LSD1 inhibitor NCL1 in embryonal carcinoma models. LSD1 positivity was higher in pooled non-seminomatous than seminomatous components (p = 0.0104). Following Bonferroni correction, teratoma and yolk sac tumor components showed higher LSD1 positivity than seminoma, whereas the embryonal carcinoma-sem

Causal inference in oral health research: Beyond statistical significance toward a causal framework.

BACKGROUND: Oral health research has adopted sophisticated statistical methods, yet studies routinely present adjusted associations as causal effects. The problem is not statistical competence but the absence of explicit causal reasoning. This commentary proposes a principled framework for causal reasoning in oral health research. METHODS: We conducted a narrative synthesis of foundational and recent literature on causal inference, drawing on texts describing the potential outcomes and counterfactual frameworks, the ICH E9(R1) regulatory addendum on estimands, study design, directed acyclic g

Astrocyte maturation creates a stage-specific niche that instructs hippocampal neurogenesis.

Astrocytes are a major part of the hippocampal stem cell niche and have been shown to control several steps of neurogenesis, from neural stem and precursor cell (NSPC) proliferation to the differentiation and maturation of newborn neurons. With the aim to identify new factors by which astrocytes promote neurogenesis, we isolated hippocampal astrocytes across key postnatal stages (p3, p10, and p14) and collected astrocyte conditioned medium (ACM) while keeping them for 1 week in culture. Depending on the developmental stage of the astrocytes, we uncovered a shift in the astrocyte secretome. Spe

Toward a cognitive framework of expert singing-voice evaluation in bel canto pedagogy: a longitudinal exploratory study.

Classical singing pedagogy relies on expert judgments that integrate auditory-perceptual cues, embodied pedagogical knowledge, and specialized evaluative language. This exploratory, longitudinal study proposes a cognitive framework, centered on Polanyi's concept of tacit knowledge, for describing how experienced bel canto pedagogues perceive singing-voice development from a brief excerpt. Twenty female soprano students (7 music-education, 13 vocal-performance majors) sang the word 'tanto' from Caro mio ben at university entry (Z1) and after 2 years of instruction (Z2). Four professional singer

Culture medium and plant growth regulator regimes influence the transcriptome and cannabisin accumulation in Cannabis sativa cell suspension cultures.

Plant cell suspension cultures are a valuable biotechnological platform for the controlled production of high-value phytochemicals. Yet, the molecular mechanisms by which culture medium composition impacts cellular transcriptional programs remain poorly characterised, especially in non-model plant species. Here, we investigated how two culture media, Murashige & Skoog (MS)- and Linsmaier & Skoog (LS)-based, influence growth, gene expression and secondary metabolite production in Cannabis sativa cell suspension cultures derived from a non-commercial genotype, Line 43/178. Cultures were analysed

pSIM: A next generation in vitro mRNA potency assay.

Potency testing for mRNA-lipid nanoparticle (LNP) vaccines remains challenging due to complex cell-based mechanisms and dependence on strain-specific antibodies. Here, we introduce a next-generation in vitro mRNA potency assay named as pSIM, pulsed stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture (SILAC) internal dosing control (IDC) mass spectrometry (MS). The pSIM assay co-processes test and reference LNPs enabling effective concentration (EC50)-based or dosing-control-normalized linear slope readouts. We demonstrate its applicability across monocistronic and multivalent self-amplifyin

The impact of national cultural framework on college students' willingness to communicate in oral English tasks in flipped classroom mode: a quasi experimental study.

Against the backdrop of "telling Chinese stories well in English," a core value orientation of college English education in the new era, college oral English teaching undertakes the dual mission of fostering language proficiency and shaping cultural confidence. This study takes the flipped classroom model as the implementation carrier, constructs a national cultural framework with three dimensions of cultural cognition, cultural expression and cultural identity, and adopts a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design to explore its effects and mechanisms on college

Variable alterations in frequencies of CRISPR/Cas9-induced nucleotide deletion and insertion in transgenic maize callus tissues exposed to chromatin modifiers.

Given the growing emphasis on the efficient application of CRISPR/Cas9 in plant genome editing, there is a need for methodologies that enhance targeted mutagenesis efficiency. In the present study, we utilized stable transgenic maize callus tissues harboring active CRISPR/Cas9 vector systems targeting either the abnormal cytokinin response 1 (ARE1) gene or the potassium channel gene (KAT2). The presented DNA sequencing data indicate that the KAT2-targeting vector, which utilizes a 3'-end truncated guide RNA, retained mutagenic activity, albeit at a notably low frequency. We quantified mutageni

Conceptualizing an athlete support ecosystem for women in professional team sport.

The expanse of women's professional team sports has burgeoned in the last ten years. The inroads made by women's leagues have raised questions about how to equitably and sustainably support, finance, and manage and foster the growth and development of women athletes. Women's leagues have unique characteristics that warrant recognition and positioning which are different from their counterpart men's leagues and enable gender specific value creation. However, the development of many women's leagues, both stand alone and those that share league governing bodies with the men's leagues, have positi

Gammaherpesvirus infection of myeloid cells reveals divergent outcomes regulated by host and viral factors.

The gammaherpesviruses establish a lifelong infection, with the cellular outcome of infection intimately regulated by cell type. Myeloid cells are an early infection target characterized by diverse outcomes. To investigate this, we use murine gammaherpesvirus 68 to demonstrate that macrophages are readily infectable, resulting in three divergent infection outcomes dictated by viral and host factors. Infection in vivo and in a cell culture model results in a high frequency of viable cells characterized by restricted viral transcription and unexpected transcription of the ORF75 locus, with rare
